well, if you do the math they're not so far apart (using US prices)

Nintendo Wii: $250 * 989,118 = $247,279,500

Playstation 3: $500 * 466,716 = $233,358,000

the difference is $13,921,500. i mean that's still $13 million but it's not double what sony has.

this doesn't count for the $600 60g ps3 either.

...but as far as #s of customers, yeah nintendo won.

Also note that the real money in the console market is in software. More units will equate to a larger buyer base. So, the money spent by the consumer on the console itself has ZERO to do with success. I could see it being something Sony would bring up though.

^^ that has consistently been the reason sony has such a large library for the various playstations (most of which is shit, but lots of shit still makes money if even a little of it sells) but they need to seriously start pumping out some hits for the ps3 here soon. i think what has really hurt ps3 sales is the fact that FFXII came out only a month or so before the ps3 so in at least the japanese market lots of the hardcore RPG gamers don't see a reason to make the investment yet. meanwhile wii launched with a great RPG

The reason that Sony has those franchises is because they had the largest consumer base. However, the console is not selling as well as the launch would make you think. Sony systems have always been horrendous to program for, and developers dealt with it because they had the largest selling base. They actually lost a little ground to the GC when Capcom started releasing their games for the GC first (I assume as a test since the system was much easier to program for). With PS3 being even more of a beast to program and having a less than steller launch, Sony may be in a bit of trouble. Their only blessing is that XBox360 is shunned in Japan and the Wii is not a graphical powerhouse.
