lol.

Also, Qatar hasn't even won a game in the AFC Asian Cup since 1988.

As if trying to goto Brazil in 2014 wasn't gonna be hard enough now more people are gonna want to go since that may be the only one worth going to for the rest of their lives!

World Cup 2026 North Korea

World Cup 2030 Antartica

"Any reason to believe we would get it back so quickly after hosting in 94? Seems pretty unlikely to me. Qatar doesn't make a damn bit of sense though, I do agree with that. Japan/South Korea, meh, they had it more recently than the USA did. Australia makes the most sense to me."

Germany hosted in 1974 and 2006. That is a difference of only 32 years.

Anyway, I still say they should only let nations bid who have proven they can qualify for the tournament within the last 5 World Cups.

You should be ashamed at making such a ridiculous decision.

I'm enjoying a good chuckle at the fact "Quatar" is trending on Twitter instead of Qatar, mostly due to people reposting it while trying to tell people it's spelled Qatar.

the other thing that frustrates me today is all the comments I am seeing around online concerning the US getting chosen in 1994 (a team that hadn't been qualifying and had never hosted vs Qatar) Sure, I would have been skeptical at the time simply based on the state of our national team, but the fact that people would even compare those two scenarios is ridiculous.

I'm not pissed off that Qatar's soccer team sucks, I don't care about that

it's just a horrible place for fans - the alcohol rules, 120 degrees, their culture is fucked in so many ways, they don't even acknowledge Israel as a country ffs. At least a majority of the world actually likes traveling to the US

^that's exactly what I mean. I've seen a bunch of statuses and tweets about how the US shouldn't be upset because we were "unproven" basically when we were selected in 1994. And I feel the same as you, I don't care about how good their team is, just look at the rest of the stuff you have to deal with relating to picking Qatar to host.

I think it pisses me off the most because all this talk about corruption and bribes... and they picked the two places that fit that profile. It's basically the FIFA committee telling the entire world to go fuck themselves and there's nothing they do about it. And there really isn't.

In terms of population and infrastructure, this is basically like announcing the Raleigh metro area as the host of the World Cup, except with the added benefit of no alcohol in public, 120 degree temperatures, and not acknowledging Israel as a nation.

i cant wait to see them employ this air conditioning technology they have in the stadiums. in one instance i cant believe they decided to host in qatar...but in another instance, this is fifa, they seem to do everything backwards or wrong from what i think should be done

Could be good for the Middle East, or it could be a huge embarassment if Israel manages to qualify.

At least they didn't do a joint bid with automatic bids locked up by Qatar AND UAE or Saudi Arabia. Maybe there will be enough oil money left over for Dubai to pay good international players to move to/play for Qatar?

Qatar has led the world in carbon dioxide output for the past 18 years so that should improve with the building of the infrastructure and running those ACs....

Qatar is saying they will allow alcohol at the games and in fan zones, but I don't want to be the drunk fan who carries a beer into the street or picks a fight with a guard at the fan zone.

"Round 1: Australia 1 vote, Japan 3 votes, Korea Republic 4 votes, Qatar 11 votes, USA 3 votes"

After seeing those voting results, I cannot believe that Australia got eliminated in the first round of voting. Surely they were not the worst possible candidate for a WC? If anything I thought they were the best alternative to the US getting the 2022 bid imo...especially considering how Japan and SK had already hosted in 2002. Just seems like BS to me.

I think the fact is that there was definite truth to the rumor that FIFA wouldn't pick Australia for 2022 simply so that they could leave China available for 2026.

I mean, FIFA seems so focused on going places that haven't had the WC before...yet Australia gets less votes than 3 sites that have hosted it before with 1 vote while Qatar gets 11? Something just seems fishy to me. Obviously I don't know all the details of their bid but could the Aussies' bid proposal have been that bad?

Qatar is a part of the Asia federation as well which (according to current rules that a continent cannot host a cup for the next two after they've hosted one which will probably be changed to do whatever the fuck they want in the future) means that the only continents that can host in 2026 are North America, South America, or Africa.

Predictions now are USA for '26, England for '30, China '34. But who the fuck knows what will happen

Wow, I am an idiot. I knew the rules but somehow due to location just didn't think of them being in the AFC even though I just posted the thing about them sucking in the AFC cup a little ways up. Disregard my stupidity. -25 TWW points for me.

That is an interesting thought.

Here is my thought, FIFA knows they just gave a World Cup to a total shit team. Now to save their face Qatar needs to perform well on the field. I see lots of BS calls going in their favor in qualifying and the finals at all levels of soccer (U-17 WC, U-20 WC, Olympics, Asia Cup, WC) just so they can qualify on their own. Then people won't be as upset about it. Expect lots of Argentina vs England 1986, USA vs Slovenia 2010, England vs Germany 2010, and Argentina vs Mexico 2010 calls. They should have an Olympic medal of some color, Youth World Cup title, and birth in a World Cup before 2022 all thanks to the refs.

I hope Australia goes back to the OFC for the 2022 cycle. Then group A could be Qatar, Australia, USA, and [?????]. We could work together to put them in their place.

It's incredibly hot, the population is tiny, there are no attractions, and it's illegal to display, carry, or consume alcohol in public.

Sounds perfect for the WC.

Here is a video of the stadiums that will be built. They look pretty cool, but I only saw 5 in that video. Doesn't FIFA require nations to have 12 stadiums with at least one that holds 80,000+ for the opening game and final?

Seems like a pretty silly rule.

But then again we're talking about FIFA.
