Main highway out in front of me (hwy 24 around Fayetteville) looked fine to me. I'm sure back roads are still a nightmare, but the main highways here may not be too bad.

Combo of ice/rain right now

Just switched from a brief little rain/sleet shower to full on snow here in Cary. Temps still above freezing though. Plows are back out in full effect. Took the dog out to piss and saw one on Tryon/cary pkwy. I'm wondering if they're going to put down some salt/sand or just stick to plowing.

For those of us outside the Raleigh area, anyone want to explain the car on fire photo? WRAL just says smoke came from under the hood and then fire, but no explanation.

Okay, so I know not to rev it, not to stop especially on an incline. Just keep it movin.

But, with an automatic, what gear thingy do you put it in? Like, the plus one or the minus one? Or just the regular D?

And when your car starts sliding, do you just roll with it? Is there anything you're not supposed to do?

Any tips are appreciated.

Transitioned from freezing rain to dumping snow about 20 minutes ago. Looks gorgeous! Hoping this will close UNC and kids school tomorrow as I already took off Monday and Tuesday for a trip to great Wolf lodge.

^^^^ keep revs low, to get going start in 2nd or 3rd gear. if you start spinning just let off the gas a bit to let tires bite, if its slick enough though your only option is to try to get momentum and just spin em.

snowing heavy now downtown raleigh

I am curious as to why so many people abandoned their cars? It seems like a lot of the traffic problems were actually from abandoning cars clogging up the flow.

Was it because they couldn't get traction? Too scared to continue? Thought they would be stuck overnight in their car?

I made the crucible commute from 2p - 530p from atlantic ave near time warner cable to duraleigh/glenwood. So many people went full panic mode it seemed.

Bridget, slide it over from drive and hit the minus a couple of times, this will drop the max gear down. I left it in 2nd yesterday. Going down a hill you can also drop it a gear to slow your car down without braking... It will slow your ability to roll, without stopping the tires.

^^wondered that myself. Probably there were some of each.

I think people being stuck was the main problem, closely followed by people who were just sick of sitting on the road and not moving.

Bridget, without knowing anything specific about your car I would say start in 2nd or 3rd gear and when slowing down a hill use the lowest gear possible (as someone else mentioned) to utilize engine braking instead of your friction brakes. And if you get stuck you can sometimes get out of it by "rocking" the vehicle, switching between Drive and Reverse over and over again. Although that's a lot easier to do with a manual.

In general I don't really know, but around steep hills like the disaster that was Glenwood near Crabtree there is just no way most cars could make it up that hill. Unless you have AWD and/or snow tires there's very little chance of getting up that hill. When I drove home yesterday I consciously made sure to avoid hills as much as possible.
