i have the opposite problem... i am usually extremely hungry about 30 minutes after i wake up, and if i don't eat anything within an hour of waking up, i start getting hunger pangs. however, if i still don't eat anything, the pangs go away after an additional hour or so as the body adjusts.

experienced it today as i had to fast for 12 hours for a blood test in the morning. ended up being a 14 hour fast and then i had one cream cheese sandwich at 1 pm. i was surprised that even though it was afternoon (lunch time), i didn't get hungry again till 4 pm even though all i had was a sandwich in 17 hours!

conclusion: the body adjusts, and quite rapidly in a lot of people!

p.s. my blood pressure was 100/70 today when i had my check up. i too, would like to know how low blood pressure affects health.

I ate 950 calories for breakfast

I feel I have some kind of blood sugar/insulin problem. I am very uncomfortable eating in the morning unless like punch said...i just force it. I finally went to the doc this week to get it checked out. If i consume over 30-40G of sugar I feel like someone unplugged me five minutes later and it lasts for about an hour. Hopefully the blood work will tell the tale!

At least I am gaining mass again.

i do have a question. at what point is blood pressure too low? i mean i know all about hypertension, but hypotension not so much quite yet.

i took a spin class this morning. kicked my ass.
took my blood pressure..... 86/58
this is after exercise.

wtf?

im trying to google it now LOL

and edit: i eat at least 6-7 times the amount of sodium reccommended per day. you know those salt grinders you get from the grocery store. i go through ne of those (by myself) in 5-6 days

punchmonk, do you find that eating high protein or high fat diets with low carbs helps with the insulin issue?

I was under the impression that people are the most insulin resistant in the morning due to the release of growth hormone during sleep. I'm doing cyclic ketogenic dieting right now, and I always make sure that my first carb-up meal is done at night instead of the next morning, because doing so in the morning gives me a violent headache and makes me want to vomit.

good write-up on the FALSE claim that eating smaller more frequent meals helps boost metabolism

(also a link to a recent study)

http://leangains.blogspot.com/search/label/Meal%20Frequency

lots of interesting reads on that site...it's how I eat (Intermittent Fasting...16 hour fast, 8 hour feeding window)

smaller more frequent meals helps with muscle growth, since your body has no means of storing protein. You can diet just fine with intermittant eating, but it's really hard to grow like that. Also, you have to make sure you eat slow-digesting proteins if you eat intermittantly. whey protein and eggs isn't going to cut it.

you don't need smaller more frequent eating to gain

^no, you're dead wrong if you think otherwise. Your body doesn't build muscle in 8 hour spurts. Do some more research and maybe find some other websites before you make claims that defy logic. I can quote a couple of books I have at the house by doctors that provide nutiritional adivce to pro sports teams that back up what I said.

Here was one of the better books on the subject.

I'm aware you don't grow muscle in 8 hour spurts

but to say that you HAVE to eat over the course of a normal day to make any sort of muscle gain makes no sense

someone eating 4000 calories over a 12 hour period vs someone eating 4000 calories over 8 hours will not matter. Actually, if you look at current research, the person eating in the 8 hour window will probably have BETTER partitioning effects (less fat gain)

That is what happened to me before I got my IR all straightened out. Except, within 2 hours I would be passing out or very close to it. I hope you don't have to take the blood glucose test... That thing is terrible

your body has no means of storing protein other than the stomach, and there are less than 5 grams of amino acids circulating in the blood at any given time. The stomach can digest an entire steak in 8 hours. Why don't you take a minute to think about that before you make your next claim. Once you've done that, then think about why every bodybuilder at a competitive level eats 6-10 times a day even when dieting.

our bodies will convert excess protein into glucose through gluconeogenesis when there is excess protein in the digestive tract.

for stress, get dvds or watch youtube videos to do/learn:

yoga
breathing exercises
tai chi
meditation
praying to the Lord
self-hypnosis
other similar activities

p.s. something that really works:

guided imagery

^2 Yeah, even with medication I feel like shit ran over twice if I have too much sugar. And carbs. Sometimes it's worth it, but most of the time - not so much..... My mom made me get checked out when I was beginning to come close to passing out a lot, even when driving. Best decision ever

^ I do yoga, and it kinda helps... Sometimes I can't get my mind to slow down though :\

I guess I should ask: does anyone have any recommendations for like.. mental exercises?

Bodybuilders at a competitive level eat 6-10 times a day because that is the way it's always been done. That doesn't mean if they ate the same amount in an eith hour window that they would be less successful. They, like you, are still getting tripped up in the same eating dogma. As with anything people are always hesitant to try something different, but that doesn't mean it's wrong.

Anyway, I feel like this is taking away from the thread. If you want to discuss this further you can feel free to PM me or maybe do some research on Intermittent Fasting. Just keep an open mind. You might surprise yourself.

YES!!! I add more fiber in the morning too and it works so well. Eggs, fiber one bar, cheese, country ham are the best for me.

I start each work day with a protein shake consisting of milk, whey protein and a banana. I also drink a glass of OJ. I used to eat cereal but read somewhere that if you start the day with a high protein meal it will help suppress your appetite. I found this beneficial b/c when I just ate cereal I'd usually be VERY hungry by just 10am. Now that I'm drinking these shakes I usually don't get hungry till 11 or later.

I've been primarily sticking to 3 meals a day at around 4,000 cal, but they're not over an 8 hour period. On a typical work day its over more like 12-13 hours.

I miss my protein powder Since I'm bored, story time!

Last summer I gained 10 pounds of mostly muscle (never did a fat% test), and I started every day with a protein shake that consisted of: 1 scoop Whey powder, 2 scoops Mass XXX powder, frozen strawberries, frozen black berries, yogurt, and cranberry juice. I packed lunch being a sandwich with a lot of slices of meat - hard salami, bologna - and cheese, along with 1 or 2 packs of granola bars and either an apple or an orange. I usually would also pack a dry gatorade bottle with 1:1 scoops of powders so that during lunch I could just add water and drink it.

After getting home from work I would go to the gym, usually packing dry protein, and do weight lifting for 45 minutes - 1 hour, then about 15 minutes of cardio. I actually made my own aerobic routine which was really basic, but mostly consisted of sets of jump rope, step-ups, and something else back to back. Boring as fuck but effective. After that I would drink the protein shake on the way home and cook dinner, being stuff like chicken, pasta, and vegetables.

Although now that I think of it, I can't remember if I always did both protein shake for breakfast AND lunch, but I do believe it was usually one or the other. Protein shakes in the morning were usually pretty nasty so maybe I didn't do protein then and just did the lunch protein. Started around 180 and got up to 195 at one point, but I think overall I settled at 191. Strength gain was pretty high, got to where I was comfortable benching with 225 for a few sets.

Then I tore my ACL in early September and lost it all went down to 180 again. Now I'm stuck at about 185lbs. Hopefully I gain some more during the rest of the summer.

I wish I could remember the ratio of XXX to Whey protein powder I used. My roommate told me and I wrote it down, because it varied when you were taking it (morning, before workout, after) but I lost it and have forgotten it

so I was looking through a random sparkpeople.com thread and saw this on a girl's signature:

Quote :
"Committed to living a healthy lifestyle 1.9.10

10 lbs.: Date night w/ boyfriend--MET 2.14.10
20 lbs.: new jeans--MET 3.6.10
30 lbs.: pedicure --MET 4.2.10
35 lbs: new health magazine--MET 4.24.10
40 lbs.: an hour massage--MET 5.7.10
45 lbs: new swimsuit--MET 5.31.10
50 lbs.: mini-vacay (one night in a hotel!)--MET 6.18.10
55 lbs: VS panties
60 lbs. : new wallet
65 lbs: new shoes
Goal weight: new wardrobe"

I am in love with this idea! I'm going to make my own. I would like to get to 145 lbs, or 28 inches in the waist:

5 lbs/30 in: something from Urban Decay or Benefit, or a necklace I've wanted from ModCloth
10 lbs/29 in: new pair of heels
15 lbs/28 in: new dress

does anyone else want to make a list?

(also, props to that girl for losing 50 lbs)

i want to but i don't know what kind of stuff i can motivate myself with??? ok this could work:

135lbs - toy story 3 3D w/ boyfriend

130lbs - sullivan's w/ boyfriend (he has a gift card that hasn't been used yet)

125lbs - pedicure or haircut (i might cave and get the haircut first cause my hair is nasty)

120lbs - massage

117lbs - new (designer) jeans

current weight: fluctuating around 135. but somedays i weigh like 138. blah.

i meant to edit my last post w/in 30 minutes but had to walk the doggy.

anyway i'm amending my motivation list (good idea samwise!!!) since i know weight isn't the main goal of my fitness goals AND because i know you can look better while not showing lesser #s on the scale SO:

135lbs/looking cute in my current fat girl bikini - toy story 3 3D w/ boyfriend

130lbs/fitting back into this size 2 jcrew skirt i LOVE - sullivan's w/ boyfriend (he has a gift card that hasn't been used yet)

125lbs/fitting back into my size 25 and 26 designer jeans - pedicure or haircut (i might cave and get the haircut first cause my hair is nasty)

120lbs/looking cute in my skinny girl bikini (from last year) - massage

117lbs/looking skinny and fit with arm and leg muscle definition (not a lot) and a pretty flat tummy - new (designer) jeans

THIS WILL DEFINITELY HELP ME. and i'm not be sarcastic. even though it is my own bank account providing the rewards i think it will definitely help to have smaller goals to work towards.

Good idea to add things that aren't scale/measurement oriented... I would like to amend my list as well

If I can squat 200 lbs at least 8 times by the end of this year, I will take a day trip to somewhere fun, whether it be an amusement park, random city.. something like that

yea i will probably end up amending my list AGAIN when i move home. my YMCA membership expired today and i'm not renewing for a $50 joining fee + $50 dues just for a month

we still have a family membership at the Y in raleigh (why i don't know) but i'm going to mooch off that when i move back and then i can hopefully add some actual weight lifting goals and stuff so i can be buff like you!

OH and i shall also reward myself if i finish my 1/2 in under 3 hours

but i will MAJORLY reward myself if i finish it in under 2h 30m (that is the pace group i'm trying to run with. that is like an 11 min mile which is totally doable until you have to do it for 13 miles haha)

i like the day trip idea. if i finish my first 1/2 in under 230 (or perhaps anywhere in the 2 30s hehe) i will go to busch gardens or something

i'm also signed up for the city of oaks (officially) 1/2 in november as an added incentive to not quit after my first 1/2 in sept.

ANDDDDDDDDD there is a triangle ymca area masters swimming group that i plan on joining when i move back too. plus ruckus soccer (since that is SOOOOOO serious and all haha). so i'm really working on getting my ass in gear and making long term goals to keep my ass in gear (and in my clothes, please)

i would love to make a list!
however a weight ist isn't in my cards considering my muscle and bf already but i will post these.

#1-135-movie with cody
#2-133-photoshoot with a photographer i like, even if i have to pay a bit
#3-130-something semi-expensive from the farmers market that i would not normally get (there are a lot. A LOT. of things i like but don't get).

i honestly do not expect to get to #2 or #3 b/c of my height (5'9" and 133 is a little too skinny, but hell, if it happens-i have rewards right )

ps i was 137 this morning but it doesnt count! i drank last night and am pretty dehydrated

I feel sort of failey today, because I learned that I haven't been doing pushups right. And I tried to prove to Mike that I can do a pullup, but apparently I can do an overhand grip but not a neutral grip. And then I tried to do negatives of neutral grip ones, but by that point my grip strength had gone to shit (I'd done other stuff too).

But the lifecenter says I'm at 18.44 percent body fat today. IDK if that is accurate at all but what I care about is that it's going down consistently. Last Thursday it said 19.01. And a few weeks ago (3 or 4) it was 19.50. So that is progress at least.

And I swear I could see a little bit of my top abs peeking through yesterday morning. Whether that was all in my head or not, it's motivating. I think I skipped a pic last week but this was last night
