Had our first appointment today. Due the end of May. Everything looks great and appears to be a single healthy thing the size of my thumb. Going in next week for blood tests and genetic testing. 10/23/2014 5:10:35 PM |

Do you deal with the blood tests that are supposedly new? When I was pregnant I took a test called the panorama. I loved that it was non intrusive and told us the gender! 10/29/2014 10:08:57 PM |
begonias warning: not serious 19578 Posts user info edit post |
Hey Samwise16, one of my students told me about a website that offers affordable genetic testing (~$100): https://www.23andme.com - but it looks like they no longer offer that service so my question is kind of moot... Are things like this legit? 11/1/2014 10:50:11 AM |
Samwise16 All American 12710 Posts user info edit post |
Kiwi, I deal with noninvasive prenatal testing (NIPT) all day every day, pretty much. Panorama is just one version of it, and there are three other brands (more coming out), so it's like Coke versus Pepsi. Personally, i don't think we have a good enough understanding of the technology yet in low risk women to be offering it to every body regardless of indication, but unfortunately that's what's happening now. And to be honest, many women get it to find out the gender when it's original intention was to screen for the more common trisomies and sex chromosome abnormalities. Then these women are shocked when they have an abnormal test result because they aren't provided adequate pre- and post-test counseling.
Oh lord, begonias, don't even get me started on 23 and Me. It's a form of direct to consumer testing, and for the most part they're bogus and just for fun but sadly some people bring them to us in a tizzy when it's usually minor. It's just risk assessment to a degree, but it usually won't tell you anything as serious as a cancer predisposition syndrome or something along those lines.

My Wife is really starting to get to the uncomfortable stage. ~7 months. Work is what has been making it tough. She is a nurse and is on her feet all day (12 hour shifts). Her legs just started swelling that last couple of days. 11/26/2014 10:47:10 AM |

Thus far it's been awesome! The midwives are great and the classes are really straight-forward and thorough. The facilities are comfortable and the location is convenient in case of issues as it is next door to WakeMed. Also, it was great that our BCBS insurance covers this location because of the partnership with WakeMed. 12/4/2014 11:34:53 AM |

I was afraid too. I was never really sure I wanted kids until just recently. But as someone who is now on the other side with a two month old I can say it's the best. My only regret is I didn't start sooner. You will be fine. And you will see the whole world in a new perspective that will forever change you. But it's all good things. 12/14/2014 11:36:55 PM |

Still no baby yet. Wife was in pain pretty bad last night with contractions. Thought it was about to be that time.
She is working today and tomorrow. She works in labor and delivery so that is a perfect place for her to be if she goes into labor. I told her to not clock out if she does. 1/27/2015 8:16:31 AM |

Yes, the car seat does fit..... But with my exhaust, the wife says the kid will never go in my car. I promptly showered her the infant size ear muffs. I may change the exhaust out for something a little more subtle. 1/27/2015 6:49:35 PM |

we used the infant sized earmuffs at the state game vs. notre dame. pnc got really loud, but the baby slept through it all.

30 weeks down. Ultrasound weigh in was 4lb-2oz, or the 84th percentile in size so far. Can already tell there is hair, and fat cheeks.
Big damn picture too, stupid photobucket/technology

Hey everyone. I've been looking to find some information on what to expect with insurance. I've got BCBS State health plan as my primary and tricare as my secondary. Does anyone have this?
I'm 16 weeks along- due September. My dog knew all along. We find out the gender next week sometime. samwise - I see you know about these genetic screenings. I did the Harmony test with my doctor. Heard of it? Getting results back next week. BCBS said they'll cover anything that the doctor signs off as being "medically necessary", and my doctor said she won't do anything that isn't medically necessary.
I'm really worried I'm going to get popped with a wicked bill because I can't seem to find a straight answer about who's going to cover what between BCBS and Tricare. Nobody says "yes, we will cover this." point blank.
Anybody else pregnant out there? This thread has been inactive for a few weeks. MaximaDriver- I'm so excited for you and your wife! And I LOVE the baby room. I'm going to start getting in to that chapter in the next few weeks.
Also- wondering what kind of stuff to put on a registry. Any ideas for this? Thanks, everyone. My husband and I are really excited about this. I've been reluctant to post anything on teedub, but perhaps Old School isn't full of the blind hating that Chit Chat and The Lounge are saturated with? 4/12/2015 6:56:10 PM |

I am pregnant with twin girls! 21 weeks along, but they don't let twins go past 36 weeks at my OB's office. So, I'm looking at the beginning of August for delivery.
We already have a daughter (almost 2), so we're not registering for a lot this time around. Let me know if you need suggestions on what to get, and what to leave off the list!
Sam is an excellent resource for the genetic screening, and she'll be able to tell you all about Harmony and the like. She did for me with my first!
This time, we did the Counsyl genetic screening. Because it was one of the few that would do twins. We were told it would not cost us anything.
We got a bill for almost $900, because Aetna (and all insurance companies) refuse to cover genetic tests for twins, and says they are experimental.
For something like Harmony, if your doctor has identified any risk factors, it should be covered by your insurance. If there are no risk factors, and it's just done for the fun of it, then I think the max Harmony charges is $200. The reason I think that is because we used Harmony's "no insurance" cost to negotiate the Counsyl bill down. Still more than nothing, but it's better than paying $900 for the test! 4/12/2015 7:39:33 PM |
