Basically spent the afternoon traipsing around in the woods, logging data points with a handheld GPS. This makes what? The third sunday that i have missed? It truly sucks, as I have been anticipating a good flying day, but alas, there is work to be done. Got to put food on the table and keep the creditors at bay...
Bryan...did ye make it out? Who was there? Anything interesting? Fanfold delta? Crabs? Skrimps? Lobskas?
BTW, I still need to fix my landing gear, as it is fubar (needs resoldering). Maybe a skid would be the order of the day where we are.
On another note, I bid on a radio on ebay, and now I'm shooting myself because it's not really that good of a deal (I didn't read the fine print where it said transmitter only...it's a Hitec Flash 5 computer radio). Oh well. It's not a BAD deal. It just ain't that great. 11/21/2004 8:13:52 PM |

i went out with a lady friend with the pink delta. there was nobody else out at all... anyway the plane flew for about 30 seconds and the motor quit... i picked the plane up and noticed smoke out of the esc, and the motor spun free like there were no magnets (you know how a good electric motor sorta cogs when the armature passes a magnet)... anyway it was really weird...
are you definitely gonna win that auction?

i think adam is selling his futaba 6x. i've got one... its not the latest and greatest but has enough features for all the stuff i do. the main things i dont like about it are lack of exponential, only 3 model memory, and lack of digital trims... also it just barely has enough mixes for the glider, and i'd like to add flap-elevator mixing to get rid of the pitch-up on application of flaps and cant because i have the flaps tied to the throttle stick. 11/22/2004 2:24:58 AM |
zxappeal All American 26824 Posts user info edit post |
Wonder how much he wants fer it...
The interesting thing is that my radio I have now HAS flaps-elevator mixing. It also has aileron-rudder mixing. And those are the only two mixes I have to choose from. And of course no model memory. This radio was made in '88. Did ANYBODY make a computer radio back then?
I would seriously love to have flaperon or V-tail mixes.
BTW, I think I'm gonna order Dad a Dynaflite Daydream today. 11/22/2004 9:28:19 AM |

anyone seen that new 14 channel futaba up close? I got to hold a demo model recently. mother fucking christ, that thing is nice. too bad its 2200$.
ive got 9cap right now, its a shame they just devalued the shit out of it by releasing the 9super series.
yall going to any swap meets this winter? just went to one in winston a couple weeks ago. 11/22/2004 10:33:33 AM |

I've been reading this thread for a bit. I used to fly. 40 size planes back in the day. What type of planes are you all flying (any of this size) and where do you go to do it. I'd love to get back into flying (doing rc nitro cars now) but don't want to join a club or get AMA stuff and go through a;; that crap, just an open field with other people to fly some stuff. Anyplace or anybody around here like that, or am I going to have to go to smaller planes like electrics/park fliers/gliders? 11/26/2004 3:25:53 PM |
dustm All American 14296 Posts user info edit post |
yeah we fly pretty much everything out at dorthea dix on most sunday afternoons... i fly gliders/electric and rarely nitro, zxappeal flies a nitro trainer, there are some other small nitros out there but nothing really above 40 size... anything too quick eats up the field pretty fast. also note that theres no runway... so hand launch and tall grass landings are the norm.
a park flier or something smaller and quieter is gonna be much more suited to the field than a .40 plane for liability and noise reasons.

Wouldn't mind getting a small plane/park flier. I'm not much for electric and recharging batteries so I'd have to find a nitro one. So the people out at Dorothea Dix don't mind you all flying? Hell, i got kicked out of a big nice empty parking lot today running my car due to "liability/trespassing" issues. May have to come out there sometime to check it all out. Is there just a mowed grass runway? 11/26/2004 3:35:19 PM |
dustm All American 14296 Posts user info edit post |
theres no short mowed section at all really... there is one spot thats a little smoother/shorter but its still rather rough. even .40 size wheeled planes have trouble ROGing at all. 11/26/2004 3:38:32 PM |
BLBncsu New Recruit 36 Posts user info edit post |
What type of planes do most people fly out there then: Gliders, small nitro's, park fliers? There really ever many people out there flying? 11/26/2004 4:01:31 PM |
zxappeal All American 26824 Posts user info edit post |
Sometimes there gets to be a nice little crowd. I think the most I have ever seen was about 5 or 6 folks with planes out there. More spectators.
What really sux about flying @ Dix is the lack of a good place to take off or land. Granted, there's a lot of open field, but no good runway. That hasn't stopped me or a bunch of other folks, but then my plane is a 3ch trainer with a 52 inch span and a .29 Supertigre engine. It's built well, and it's not too big. Most of the other planes you'll see are either sailplanes or small fuel-powered floaters (polyhedral wings, etc.). The biggest planes out there that have been flown successfully were a Tiger Trainer with a .46 and a Gee Bee profile with a .50 (though the Gee Bee didn't fare too well upon landing; it's built rather lightly).
You're pretty much limited to whatever you can hand-launch and land SLOWLY. My plane has survived probably almost 2 dozen landings, but I have broken a couple of props, and my landing gear needs to be resoldered (not an issue with aluminum gear, but that shit costs money I don't have). It's like a carrier landing, but instead of arresting cables across a deck, you have tall grass. You stop just that abruptly.
I haven't been in almost a month, because there's always something that's more pressing here around the house and at work. I am, however, looking forward to going back out there and playing "bank and yank" with ye olde trainer plane.
On another note, the CASL soccer fields are just around the corner, and their grass surface is more than ideal for good takeoffs and landings. You just have to dodge a couple of goals. The big deal is being able to get on the field when it's not occupied. What with seriously cold weather just over the horizon, maybe that will change a bit. I ain't scared to fly in the cold. The planes love it. 11/26/2004 7:46:41 PM |

Is it not possible to take a weed-wacker or mower to the area to cut it down, not sure if Dix would like that or not though. Maybe I'll have to get me a small .15-.30 plane, i've got all the radio/servo gear, just need a plane and motor. Anybody got any recommendations on a small, decent, nitro powered 4-ch plane? 11/26/2004 9:40:12 PM |

The CASL soccer fields over at Dix appear to be the heat, y0. I didn't get a chance to fly, tho. Did some taxi runs, but the wind was gusting so badly that the plane did some cartwheels. Lucky me the plane is pretty tuff.
Bryan came out with his stik park flyer and hovered around in the gusts some (funny to watch).
Who is that fella? Adam? Out there with what looked like a Kyosho Flip 3D. At least I think.
I had to bail out (family things), so I didn't get to see much of that, though he took it off right when I was driving off, and all the Mexicans stopped kicking their soccer balls around and stared up at the sky. Pretty humorous. I had a good laugh. 11/28/2004 8:58:55 PM |
dustm All American 14296 Posts user info edit post |
yeah the soccer fields are cool... plus theres a couple small ridges, so if its windy next time we'll see if that works. yer two for two... thats adam with the kyosho (not sure about the guy in the red jacket... but he's got a .46 profile geebee like duke's) and man that thing was CRAZY... zipping along at 60mph straight and level then breaking into insanely violent snap rolls and spins and shit... damn thing would put a UFO (like the kind from outer space) to shame. 11/29/2004 12:37:32 PM |

Fly today, gentlemen?
I went Wednesday afternoon...first time I got to do takeoffs and good landings with the trainer plane. I honestly think this thing has a tad too much engine on it, coz i have a tough time idling back enough to get her to sink outta the sky. Of course, it may be that I need to fiddle around with the idle a bit more. Try to get 'er to tick over at a sufficiently low speed.
On another note, it's amazing how you can rotate the spray bar in the carb and change the mixture progression of the carb. Previous owner of this engine had it rotated too much clockwise (viewed from fuel nipple), and the midrange was entirely too rich (must have had the tank mounted lower). Now the thing throttles up much cleaner after I rotated it back some.
Need ailerons. 12/5/2004 12:03:14 PM |
zxappeal All American 26824 Posts user info edit post |
You farkin' bastages missed a good day.
The farthest field hadn't been taken over yet, so i said WTF, and went and flew. Finished adjusting the engine, and she ticks over good and slow now. Throttle progression is pretty damn good.
My old Expert radio just ain't all that great, so I haven't been able to crank in some serious rudder...dual rates on the aileron channel (which I use instead of rudder 'coz it's my primary steering channel). So I went in and cut my rudder throws a bit, and threw the radio on high rate, and made the appropriate trim adjustments (the trim varies CONSIDERABLY between low and high rate; NOT nice!). Gave 'er a bit more elevator throw, and now this plane flies SO much better!
This baby now damn near HOVERS on approach. 12/5/2004 4:49:43 PM |

Holy SHIT!!!
i can't tell what airline that is, but be damned if I ever want to fly with 'em! I wonder if there was just that much crosswind, or if they just hire tools to fly their planes. And I wonder, if the crosswind was that bad, why weren't they vectored in on an approach to another runway? 12/5/2004 5:53:51 PM |
underPSI tillerman 14085 Posts user info edit post |
you can see the windsock next to the runway right before he flared. there was a hell of a crosswind and it looks like there is some tailwind too. shit, i think that is one hell of a pilot. 12/5/2004 6:31:19 PM |
zxappeal All American 26824 Posts user info edit post |
Upon closer examination, I think you is correct.
He's slipping into the wind, and straightens it up just before touching the mains. What I would call a hairy landing. Wonder how many tires they lost on the landing gear?
Looks like a lot of my model airplane landings... 12/5/2004 8:41:33 PM |

Just wanted to give you guys a heads up. BARKS, a r/c club out of Burlington, is having their annual swap shop at the end of Jan. I think its the 22nd. My uncle is their president I think and so I've been to several. They keep getting bigger and bigger.
I'll be there this year since I'm getting to the airplane deal. I'll be putting together a Kaos 40(60) not sure which it is. but I'm going to need a radio and motor so I'm being cheap and going to the swap shop to get them 12/20/2004 11:46:30 AM |

Yo, Bryan...thought about ye today, man. I was on a 100-acre tract of land that was all pasture (loads of cattle). Lots of rolling hills; looked like a good place to try slope. further evidence: at least three or four turkey vultures thermalling and riding the wind.
I've gotten a lot done on my dad's Daydream, but I've run into money issues and can't get the rest of the radio gear yet (as in the receiver and two mini servos).
On another note, wifey got me a GWS DeHavilland Beaver park flyer model for Crimmus. I have to get radio gear and a battery pack or two for that too... 12/29/2004 8:23:09 PM |

its a GWS Slow Stick... i got it and a flight pack (esc, batt, rx, two servos) at hobby masters. i'm not sure how much stuff they have left... they didnt have much that day. online you can get that stuff at http://www.buygws.com or Tower hobbies has it too. take a look at http://www.Hobby-lobby.com, they have some cool new cheap tiny tiny servos (called blue something...) anyway those are gonna go in the seeker.

ok the plane is completed however the elevator channel on the reciever died while we were testing it. (THANK THE LORD we weren't flying yet) so that grounded any ideas of enjoying the great day today for flying. we're not completely done yet. Still got some balancing to do and we're doing to do some extra stuff to fancy it up a bit. if the reciever hadn't gone bad we'd be done right now 1/3/2005 10:55:04 PM |

Yeah dan that place is pretty neat except for a couple small trees or or whatever they are on the slope... And a bunch of little trees and bushes on the lower slope and bowl next to it (one of the briars got me today ). I was flying the side facing the beltline. That area is a pretty high point. Its always windy there and you can see clear across town... Pretty cool. I also re-busted the tail boom today... I'm fixing that tonight. The other day i took the reciever and gyro out of their cases, now i have all the radio gear crammed up an inch in front of the wing. Saved me some nose weight since the balance is farther forward plus the 1/3 oz of case plastic i removed!
I like the GWS beaver... looks like a cool plane
Clevelander... The elevator channel died!? Did you make sure it wasnt just the servo? I'm glad it didnt die in the air
