P. Rivers is #7 in SI's "Top 10 QB's under 25".
Quote : | "Philip Rivers Age 23, Chargers Rivers didn't get much playing time during his rookie season, but he did throw for 13,854 yards and 95 touchdowns as a four-year starter at N.C. State. San Diego chose to bring back Drew Brees after his Pro Bowl performance last season, but Rivers has the tools to be an effective starting quarterback. Whether it's with the Chargers remains to be seen." |

If you didn't have Rivers bias, then you wouldn't think it's stupid
go back to the UVA game 2 years ago
game was dead even 90% of the game
Schaub's a good qb
it's just the Falcons know that Vick is God and they don't really need him to perform in preseason b/c he's already got the job
thus, Schaub gets a lot more playing time with the better players, and since he's a good qb already, he looks even better
The difference between San Diego and Atlanta is that SD's qb situation isn't as stable or promising as Atlanta's. And, if Vick gets hurt, there isn't much uncertainty about Schaub's ability since he has so much playing time already. If Brees gets hurt, Philip is at a disadvantage because the Chargers don't have enough confidence in Brees to be comfortable with Philip.
Might suck for Philip, but I'm happy for Matt.

Week 16 17-41, 188 yards, 0 TD, 2 INT
Week 17 14-22, 133 yards, 1 TD, 1 INT
For the season his QB rating was 42. The lowest possible rating is like 37 or something I think...
For comparison sake Kyle Boller (who sucks knutesac) had a QB rating of 71
So yeah despite a good preseason showing, he sucked last year.... 8/24/2005 3:37:56 AM |

You're definately right. I was that game with UVA, one of the best I think I've seen at State. Schaub isn't pathetic and I guess people have gotten to see him more so they can gauge his performance in the preseason with his better players.
I'm waiting to see if Schaub tanks like Doug (Johnson, Peterson?), the previous Falcons QB that everyone thought was hot shit until God broke his leg and they threw him. 8/24/2005 10:08:27 AM |

He played decently yesterday--51.4%, 2 TDs, 2 INTs.
Schottenheimer (despite his loyalty to the starter) is the kind of guy who will yank you if you are doing things that can make the team lose (interceptions).
So what do you guys think it would take for Rivers to be given the starting spot? 9/12/2005 12:24:13 PM |

i still think they should move Drew Brees... they can get a lot more for him (a first round pick is almost a guarantee) and ultimately i think Rivers is the better QB and better fit in San Diego.
If they could jsut pick up a gamebreaker type receiver to pair with McCardell they'd have one of the best offenses in the league with rivers at the helm... 10/4/2005 3:16:41 PM |

After the way Brees played this weekend, I doubt he is going anywhere. They were talking about keeping both QB's which sucks for PRiv. They like the idea of having a substantial backup for Brees incase of injury or a major screw up. I don't see the Chargers trading a stellar QB like Rivers to a team that needs a QB just based purely on the fact that if he sits the bench in SD, he won't wreck their Def playin for some other team.
I wanted Rivers to head to Dallas and play for Parcells...that would have been awesome. Would have been a rough year for him, but if they got their shit together it would have been a hell of a team. I can't think of one team I would want Rivers to get traded to right now that would make me happy. All the teams either suck because they have no O-line or running game...or have an established QB that is running things well. Someone help me out...where should he head if he had the chance even? 10/4/2005 3:49:26 PM |

Teams that need a QB
the Bills (good RB, good WR's)
the Jets. (eh on offense but a good d)
the Cardinals (awesome WR's)
the Redskins (talent at RB and one WR)
the Dolphins (talent at WR and TE)
the Texans (some talent at RB and WR)
the Ravens (tough to know what they have on offense, good defense)
the Lions (sick WR's and agood RB)
the Browns (ugh, unless they wanna stick with dilfer)
the Bears (two RBs, decent WR's... they might stick with orton/grossman tho) 10/4/2005 3:55:52 PM |

I'm sure its been said before, but some of us dont like to watch the news or read the thread, so I'll say it again:
If they trade Brees and he goes on to have a great career, and Rivers isn't what they were expecting (which I dont believe will happen personally), It will be the all time biggest bonehead move in professional sports, only competing with the Red Sox ability to trade away players in their prime. 10/5/2005 8:22:30 AM |

262/400, 3159 yds, 27 TDs, 7 INTs
Those numbers are pretty damn good. If he keeps that up, he'll have a hell of a career.
If he plays like he did for SD's first few games last year or this year, then he'll kill his team.
So which one is the real Drew? 10/5/2005 9:17:00 AM |

rallydurham Suspended 11317 Posts user info edit post |
Yeah Brees ain't all that...
his TD numbers are inflated because Gates is such an easy red zone target. Any QB with a luxury like that is gonna have more TD's than his ability would normally dictate.
Also LDT gets him an absurd amount of yards after the catch compared to most RB's around the league.
His 7 INT's were nice no doubt, but that seems a bit fluky and also chalk that up to every team putting 8 in the box against the Chargers to try to stop LDT. It's easier to limit your INT's when you have only one safety to worry about.
Also the Chargers won a lot of games last year so he wasn't throwing from behind very often.
Brees is a quality QB don't get me wrong, but he's not an elite QB by any means.... if they could groom Philip for the starting role next year and get some pieces for Brees I think that would be their best option... 10/5/2005 2:34:08 PM |
socrates Suspended 1964 Posts user info edit post |
but wolfpack it wouldnt be a complete bust because they would get a good ammount for him in a trade. if they traded rivers for almost nothing and he became a start that would be a tragedy 10/5/2005 2:49:11 PM |

^^I agree, but I don't think the Chargers have the luxury of making that decision.
They're still in recovery mode since Ryan Leaf, so they can't give up a quality QB... It sucks for Rivers' fans, but SDs best right now is to Franchise Brees one more year (assuming they make the playoffs again this year).
But for a franchise like the Chargers, they really can't risk alienating their fanbase by giving up a potentially "franchise" QB. You stick with 2 QBs as long as you can afford it (which would be one more year). 10/5/2005 2:56:52 PM |
rallydurham Suspended 11317 Posts user info edit post |
I dont think anyone on here would mistake me for being a huge Rivers fan.
But with Gates/LDT/McCardell I think Rivers would be a fine QB.
He's the kind of QB that does best when he has a lot of receiving options because he reads defenses well.
Rivers is never gonna have a Bledsoe or Elway arm, but if you surround him with talent he could be a poor man's Carson Palmer I think.
If they don't compete for the Super Bowl this year trade Brees for help. Too many cap complications to trade Rivers and Brees is a free agent so it makes it easy. 10/6/2005 3:45:28 PM |
jdlongNCSU All American 7105 Posts user info edit post |
classifying you as a rivers' fan wasn't really my intention.
i'm just saying, if the chargers make the playoffs, they can't get rid of Brees.
The sheer chance that Rivers busts and Brees takes a different team to the playoffs is reason enough to hold onto him. The GM has said they will probably have the cap money to "Franchise" Brees again if they have to. So I think they'd do that, and let him roll for one more year and then worry about it down the road.
I agree, trading Rivers isn't an option. But a franchise like the Chargers will take the hit for having two expensive QBs rather than risking going bust at the QB position yet again.
But if the Chargers slip and don't make the playoffs, they trade Brees... that's a simple choice. 10/6/2005 3:52:23 PM |
rallydurham Suspended 11317 Posts user info edit post |
The goal is to win the Super Bowl.
I don't think they have a super bowl team right now.
Trade brees and improve the defense or get another WR
No sense tying up 20% of your cap room on two above average QB's... 10/6/2005 3:57:18 PM |
