Colbert being added to the World's most 100 Influential People gains more justification http://spring.newsvine.com/_news/2006/08/01/307864-stephen-colbert-causes-chaos-on-wikipedia-gets-blocked-from-site 8/2/2006 2:38:22 PM |

Quote : | "Colbert's Wikipedia prank backfires It seemed like a subject born for satirist Stephen Colbert -- an online encyclopedia that lets anyone edit entries. The champion of "truthiness" couldn't resist making fun of a website where facts, it seems, are endlessly malleable. But after making fun of Wikipedia on Monday night's "Colbert Report," Colbert learned some hard truths about Wikipedia's strength in resisting vandalism. Here's how the segment started, according to Newsvine:
"In the segment, Colbert logs on to the Wikipedia article about his show to find out whether he usually refers to Oregon as 'California's Canada or Washington's Mexico.' Upon learning that he has referred to Oregon as both, he demonstrates how easy it is to disregard both references and put in a completely new one (Oregon is Idaho's Portugal), declaring it 'the opinion I've always held, you can look it up.'"
Colbert then called on users to go to the site and falsify the entry on elephants. But Wikipedia's volunteer administrators were among those watching Colbert, and they responded swiftly to correct the entry, block further mischievous editing, and ban user StephenColbert from the website.
In this battle of truth vs. truthiness, truth ended up with the upper hand." |

Colbert was just making a point about wikipedia. He could probably care less if he's banned from it, and will probably just make a couple jokes about it.
I love wikipedia, but I know in the past that the staffs of politicians have "adjusted" their boss' wikipedia article to reflect changing priorities. For example, a representative once said he wanted to abide by a self-imposed term limits pledge and that was on his article in wikipedia. When he made the decision to run for office again despite his previous term limits pledge, a staff member of his removed the pledge. Wikipedia was able to tell based on the IP address.
It got so bad with government sources that wikipedia made it so that Washington, D.C. government IP addresses cannot automatically change an article, the change is reviewed and then it can apply if unbiased.

From the Daily Show, but with Colbert and Stewart joking on a Geraldo comment on the O'Reilly Factor.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PWqneVIA3zs
This quote should be made canon for most TV personalities:
Quote : | "Colbert: "What are you implying Jon? That O'Reilly are Geraldo are narcissists enthralled in their own overblown egos? Projecting their own petty insecurities onto the world around them? Inventing false enemies for the sole purpose of bolstering their sense of self-importance? Itty bitty Nixons minus the relevance or a hint of vision? How dare you!" |

Quote : | "O'Reilly, Colbert to appear on each other's shows NEW YORK (AP) -- It may feel like looking into the mirror for Bill O'Reilly and Stephen Colbert next week.
The Fox News Channel host and Colbert, who has essentially based his comic character every evening on Comedy Central on him, will trade appearances on each other's programs January 18.
"I'm really looking forward to speaking to a man who owes his entire career to me," O'Reilly said.
On "The Colbert Report," Colbert portrays a self-involved talk-show host who has tried to bring "truthiness" to the world. His character owes an obvious debt to O'Reilly, who holds court in the "no-spin zone" each evening.
On "The O'Reilly Factor," O'Reilly portrays a ... um, he hosts the top-rated program in cable news.
"I look forward to the evening," Colbert said. "It is an honor to speak face-to-face with a broadcasting legend, and I feel the same way about Mr. O'Reilly."

yeah, it was weird with no studio audience. but much to his credit, O'Reilly was a good sport about it, for the most part (of course, he had to throw in his cheap shots after Colbert was gone). I didn't know if Colbert was going to do it in character, but i guess it actually would have been much more contentious if he did it straight. 1/18/2007 11:01:20 PM |

The aircraft crashed just short of the runway, killing 71 of the occupants. One of the 11 initial survivors died of injuries 29 days after the accident. The aircraft was destroyed by the impact and resulting post-crash fire. Also killed on this flight were James, Peter and Paul Colbert: the father and older brothers of comedian Stephen Colbert." |
