ganked the album online today. was pretty disappointed actually, thought it was really sloppy in parts (especially drums, which is highly uncharacteristic). im hoping this is just a ghetto pre-mastered version.

vicarious sounds exactly the same, and we know that it's a legit release. i'm pretty sure this is it.

this feels like eMotive to me. sloppy, rushed, and maynard hardly goes all out. plus, what's with the drug songs (the pot, rosetta stoned)? tool goes from singing about the collective unconcious and jung theory to marijuana and someone shitting the bed. it almost seems like a joke.

I think what ends up happening with bands like this is, it gets harder and harder to top the expectations placed upon them by worshippers-turned-haters

You can only blow somebody's mind so many times before the person's used to your style. Sounds like somebody were expecting a change of life/change of music from Tool's new album and instead were disappointed to find that they got an album.

These are the same people who get pissed when movie adaptations do not follow source material 100% of the way

actually, yes, i was. tool is the ONLY band that (in my VERY humble opinion) has yet to release a bad song. i have enjoyed every single song of theirs from opiate through lateralus immenesely at some point, and have them all memorized. to call them my favorite band is an understatement. i used lateralus as a guideline (for positive living) through my troubled times. it's a very positive album and some of it's mantra's (be patient, embrace life for what it is, be glad to be alive and breathing, etc.) got me through some tough shit.

with this love of everything this band has put out, i was sure that this album would be just as solid as the previous ones. we did wait five years didn't we? it's not like they just shit it out to fill a record contract (see APC's eMotive for what happens when you do that). well, here it is, and all i can think is they've burnt themselves out. maybe they got bored with the saturn ascending thing and decided singing about pot was much more constructive. i don't know. i just know that i expected much more than this from a band that's proven it can shatter expectations with every single song.

i think we can all agree that Tool doesn't "rush" anything.

That said, I haven't heard the album yet but I"m sure it will kick ass.

it's possible this album is just as good as previous ones, but that i've simply outgrown the style. with that said, i've found this one to be comparitively uninspired; lateralus was a progression, while this is more of a dwelling in what they've already done because it's a formula that successfully sells to the angry unaccepted teenagers and mystic potheads.

on a side note, actually reminded me a lot of the quake series. quake1 was the bomb, quake2 was very different but still a great game, quake3 was also very different from the previous two, quake4 was essentially a mind-numbing cliche fps with multiplayer reminiscent to me of all the bad qualities of the previous versions.

sorry to be mr.negative, but i bet i'm not the only one that feels this way. i'll still listen to my old tool and love it though.

ive been a huuuge Tool fan for probably 10 years (as im sure a lot of you have) and i think this is their weakest effort, altho, of course i still like it a lot.

Jambi is still a darn good song tho

It seems to me that people are getting turned off of this CD primarily because of the lyrics. I cannot comprehend how you could attack the musical aspect of the CD.

[Edited on April 19, 2006 at 1:33 PM. Reason : This is the not the first Tool CD with Maynard playing with lyrics, see Ticks and Leeches.]

i completely agree. notice how the last track feels tacked on, and rips off (-) ions. it's like they put it on there because they had to have a crazy filler end track like lateralus.

i never liked the casual tool fans. the ones who shop at hot topic and yell for hooker with a penis at every show because it's heavy and says fuck a lot. i always had huge problems defending tool with my friends, who all think they are nu-metal trash because of these casual fans. now with this album i'm going to have an even harder time. "dude, they have songs called the pot and rosetta stoned. don't even try and tell me they're 'deep'."

so is this album trying to do much?...trying to be too deep? ...like lataralus?

imo, tool is at its best when they are raw. thats why i like undertow so much. maybe cause it was the first i heard of them...and i loved the sound...but they've "evolved" quite a bit since then. a more refined sound....more complex...more producing. some people like that....i dont. ive like each album less then the one that proceeded it (not including opiate, which is just an EP...even though i like opiate better then lataralus).

i wont get to listen to this until i get home....we'll see...

it's not very deep lyric-wise. think APC 13th step style lyrics with very very clean guitars and bass. none of that feedback and sludgy guitar like in bottom, flood, and swamp song. also think of the tabla breakdown in pushit (live). lots of long jams like that, but they never really go anywhere like they do in pushit (remember i'll always love you...etc.).

Once again, it's a lot different from the albums that preceded it, especially the lyrical style. I'm still gonna enjoy the hell out of it though.

And yeah, Wings Part 1 and 2 are amazing pieces of music. Jambi is great and Pot rocks good and hard.

I liked the actual 10,000 days song, and if lost keys actually went somwhere it has the potential to kick ass, like I said, unfortunatley this is not the high point of tool. I think Lateralus was actually, despite the flaming I get for saying that from multitudes of people.

"who are you to wave your finger"-The pot; since a couple people have brought it up i thought i'd point out that i think "the pot" is a reference to the cliche "The pot calling the kettle black" not nec. marijuana, but i recognize that it goes along with the "you must be high" part of the song as well.

with rosetta stoned... could stoned mean like stoning (the punishment), as opposed to being high. I don't know all the lyrics to these songs, maybe some of you do, but until then i wouldn't be so quick to assume it's a reference to drugs, especially having listened to all their other stuff and having some idea of how many metaphors he uses and odd references they make

From wikipedia (i know not the greatest source, but for quick reference)

Use as metaphor

Rosetta Stone is also used as a metaphor to refer to anything that is a critical key to a process of decryption, translation, or a difficult problem, e.g., "the Rosetta stone of immunology", "thalamo-cortical rhythms, the Rosetta stone of a subset of neurological disorders", "Arabidopsis, the Rosetta stone of flowering time (fossils)".

Could they have made it into a verb, meaning to decrypt something... like "smurphed" on family guy to mean fucked and sucked "Yeah, she smurphing smurphed me right in the smurphing parking lot"

a while back they suggested on their website that this song had some hidden shit to it

i like vicarious and all...but i have some reservations.

first and foremost, i love maynard's voice, but in this song, its nothing but a bunch of filtered whisper singing...nothing that actually uses the full potential of his vocal chords, except for that last chorus, but even thats filtered heavily. so im thinking maynard has lost his ability to hit long, loud notes (see eulogy for example).

second...this song sounds like a b-side to lateralus, in all honesty. every tool album has some sort of evolution from the one before it, but i see them getting stuck here.

hopefully the full album will shine a better light and prove me wrong. I WANT TO BE PROVEN WRONG!

i cant wait for may 2nd.

imo all their albums are steps in a NEW direction (people grow and change throughout life, these guys are no exception), with hints from previous albums. For example Ticks and Leeches was the heaviest song on Lateralus, and seemed to have an Aenima feel to it (not to mention it was written b/c of how much they got shit on from their record company from sales of that album), much like Vicarious seems to be a page right out of the Lateralus book. Aenima doesnt sound like Undertow, but you can still hear similarities in the some tracks (again, a progression). After a few listens of 10,000 days I can hear other tracks that seem familiar to Lateralus in the sense of a natural progression. This album grows on me more every time I listen to it.

When people have expectations of something before they experience it, it takes away from the experience immensely. I think this album is great and NEW, which is all I can ask for. Every listen gets better. Much much better. That alone is what it has in common with EVERY album they have released.

and I'm definitely still buying a copy on May 2nd.

^^^^ lyrics:

Quote :
"

began at 2 am
and i fueled eating up an entire box of krispy kremes
and i might eat enough/it up,
as i saw area 51,
contemplating the multitudes of the most flaming stuff ive ever seen
and then it ripped the sky wide open,
and ive never seen a place like this,
i do believe i punctured or died or something within my birkenstocks (?)
Wachen Sie Auf x4 (wake up, in german)
holy fucking shit,
[?]

then the x files people
who were in some kind of blurry,
[?]
My bug eyes,
might be a big jaw,
[?]

So on his way, like an apparition [?]

Fuck me, fuck me, dead head, chemistry.
[?]

And after calming me down with some orange slices and some [?"___ Spooning"], he revealed to me his singular purpose.
He said: “You are the chosen one, the one who will deliver the message.
A message of hope for those who choose to hear and a warning for those who do not.”
“Me the chosen one, me? They chose me? I didn’t even graduate from fucking high school.”

Kill me (x6) ? (Shit the bed)

Then you looked right through me
With somniferous almond (?) eyes.
Don’t even know what that means
Must remember to write it down.
This is so real,
Like the time [?] away.
See my hear is racing,
‘Cuz this shit never happens to me.

Can't breathe right now.
It was so real.
Like I'd woke up in Wonderland.
Awesome and terrifying
And I want to be all alone.

Well I'll tell you a story
And can anyone tell me why?
[?]
Will I ever be coming down?

This is so real.
Finally it's my lucky day.
See my heart is racing,
‘Cuz this shit never happens to me.

Can't breathe right now.

You believe me don’t you?
Please believe what I just said.
See the dead angel and… (?)
And this wasn’t all in my head.

[?]
[?]
And they showed me something.
[?] begin.

Strapped down in my bed.
Feet cold and eyes red.
I’m out of my head.
Am I alive, Am I dead ?
Can’t remember what they said.
Goddamn shit the bed.

Hey.
I…
High…
Oh…

Overwhelmed is what you would be
If placed in my position.
Such a heavy burden now to be the one.
Born to bear and read you all the details of our ending.
To write it down for all the world to see.
But I forgot my pen.
Shit, my bad again. Typical.

Strapped down in my bed.
Feet cold and eyes red.
I’m out of my head.
Am I alive, Am I dead?
Sunkist/Sunkissed(?) and Sudafed.
Gyroscopes and infrared.
Won’t help to bring dead.
Can’t remember what they said.
Goddamn, shit the bed.

Can’t remember what they said.
Kill me.
Can’t remember what they said.
Kill me. (x2)
Can’t remember what they said.
I am [?] can’t remember what it had.

No, oh no, no… [?]

Goddamn, shit the bed."

Also you guys have probably seen this rumor floating around but if you look at one of the old Tool newsletters: http://www.toolband.com/news/letter/2005_09.php, people believe this is a "decoy" album.

Quote :
"Now where was I?.. Oh yeah, TOOL!.. I'm not going to reveal my source, Mister Patience, but do you want to know the kind of things that have been going on while this record was being recorded? Okay, first there was the decoy record just to confound all those would-be bootleggers out there. This took, oh, about a year, just because the band members wanted it to sound pretty close to the real thing (so as to be believable), along with equally believable art design."

However, most likely this is the real album.

If it was a decoy, that would actually be really funny. But they have already released Vicarious to the radio stations, so I doubt it unless they intentionally left Vicarious on this "decoy" album"

The lyrics to 10k Days make the song even more amazing. The ambient thunderstorm background is perfect.

Jambi is really a great song. the album is still very good as a whole even if its not close to a favorite of theirs. But Jambi really gives me a feel of their heavier early stuff or even AENIMA.
