Don't worry, State will probably finish 4th in the ACC next season too. New coach, same NCSU mediocrity.

add Bill Gillespie to that list (Texas A&M coach)

solid coach who has brought that program back in only two years...might be a gamble though

Whether he wanted out or not, I'd certainly hope we at least tried to keep him, even if that effort would end up being futile.

In all seriousness, we matched their offer, but didn't exceed it.

Herb decided a change in location was best for his family.

yes, it was the fact that they were our rivals, not that they were unc and duke, two clearly superior programs. [/sarcasm]

i mean complain if you want that we lost to them, but dont mislabel the problem.

This posistion has to be a very appealing job for coaches in the market. Just think of all the raw talent that we have, and the fact that is in the ACC.

I would not worry about getting a no name. I'd worry about having to deal with a hot shot coach needing to adjust for a couple of seasons where Sendek would have had a very competetive team next year.

Whats with "you people" and bringing up names like Quinn Snyder and Bob Huggins? Do you really a coach whose most recent news involves the terms "NCAA violations" or "DUI"?

I want Bob Knight something fierce. Maybe he isn't the best coaching hire, but I've just always loved what the man does as a coach.

Am I the only one who thinks Rick Barnes would be an awful hire? Statefans seems pretty sure we are getting him and they all want to suck him off when he gets here.

and I just got banned from there for saying so, apparently.

from ESPN Insider - Andy Katz

Quote :
"Herb Sendek's decision to leave NC State for Arizona State didn't shock his new colleagues considering the way he had been treated by the Wolfpack faithful.
The perception was that Sendek was being unfairly criticized despite coaching the Wolfpack to five straight NCAA Tournaments. He was in a no-win situation, since his personality is a bit vanilla at times compared to the star power of Duke's Mike Krzyzewski and North Carolina's Roy Williams. Still, NC State's loss of the cerebral Sendek will be Arizona State's gain, although it may take some time for him to get the Sun Devils moving again.

"Herb has done a great job everywhere he's been," Arizona coach Lute Olson said. "[But] look at what UCLA will have back, SC [as well], and we'll have everyone back but Hassan Adams and Chris Rodgers. Depending on what happens at Cal [with Leon Powe's draft decision] they'll be tough, too.

"The league is pretty strong top to bottom, so it might take him some time."

As for NC State's next move, don't be surprised to see George Mason's Jim Larranaga mentioned. Larranaga is a hot commodity now and has strong ACC ties from his tenure as an assistant at Virginia. He loves Mason and the school will try to keep him from looking elsewhere, but it's hard to imagine him not listening to NC State if the Wolfpack called.

Alumni Dereck Whittenburg and New Orleans' Monte Towe may also get calls. So, too, could Winthrop's Gregg Marshall. AD Lee Fowler is well connected, so expect this to be a thorough search.

Two weeks ago, when Sendek's name surfaced on the rumor mill with Cincinnati, Sendek and Fowler both told ESPN.com about how Sendek was happy in Raleigh and how well the program was going. Talent remains and more is on the way, with the Wolfpack expected to be an upper-tier ACC team again.

One name to cross off is Texas' Rick Barnes. He's not leaving Austin for Raleigh. He has a better job. Indiana's new coach, former Oklahoma coach Kelvin Sampson, probably would have been a top candidate had the Hoosiers not swooped in to grab him.

There are plenty of mid-major coaches, like Wichita's Mark Turgeon, who would gladly run to State if Fowler called. Turgeon was in the mix at Arizona State earlier this week, but a source close to Turgeon said he withdrew his interest and was in talks with the Shockers to extend and beef up his deal there.

I'm hearing Barnes is our #1 target. We have to put up the big money though...but we're definitely going after him.
