I have one bottle of water wetter and a 50/50 mix as it is now. It's always had a problem getting hot, so I ditched the mechanical fan when it fragged last summer for the electric, which many have tried with success before. Now it never heats on the road, only on the beach or up a steep hill (daniel @ ure), when it has alot of strain on the engine.

I'm about to just drop the change on a big aluminum radiator

have you gone through the other parts of the cooling system yet? with a stock motor, shouldn't have a need for that kind of bling...

replaced thermostat, burped the system multiple times, newer radiator the only thing I haven't done is high pressure flush. It's had new head gaskets and the top end rebuilt (by toyota), think that could have anything to do w/ it?

why even waste the bottle of water wetter when you are running a 50/50 mixture? you do know that antifreeze has no cooling characteristics, right? do what joel said:

"i hear you, get you some water wetter too and dont run a 50/50 mix of coolant/water. more like 80% water and 20% coolant, then 2 bottles of water wetter."

although i'd recommend 70/30 just to keep the boiling point up a tad higher.

ivan's right, it shouldnt be getting that hot like that. reinstall a stock fan with a new viscous on it and see if that helps- yout taurus fan might not be moving enough air.

the stock fan is in a million pieces and the clutch is too, and the heating issue was there before i swapped fans. It would actually overheat in traffic w/ the mechanical fan, now only in strenous situations.

Yes, it did have overheating problems when ben had it. The only thing I haven't touched is the water pump because of its location.

unless there's something wrong with it, taurus fans move a serious amount of air.

i'd try the coolant mixture already reccomended, and then add some water wetter if still needed.

matt, i could be up for that weekend. remind me when it gets closer.

I realize the Taurus fan is a serious fan, but an electric fan will only move the air its rated at if its getting the proper voltage. ANYHOW what tstat have you got in there tawaitt?

yes it is shrouded 90% of the way around (some small gaps b/t it and the radiator). I have it on a 40 amp relay. This isn't the later model 3.8 2 speed fan that is recomended, its a fan from the smaller V6 and is only one speed. It still moves a ton of air, but I'm going to look around for the 2 speed fan. Like I said, it had the problem w/ the mechanical fan too, so I suspect something else is the cause.

It has the stock toyota thermostat (190?)

i don't care how much air the fan moves, without an effective shroud the fan isn't shit. try a lit cigarette test. hold it up to the gaps in the shroud. if it's pulling a lot of air from the gaps, then that might just be your problem.
