Found an excellent strategy for dealing with seiging armies. This only works if you have archers that can lay down the wooden spikes. Start the seige with 2-3 archer units right next to the gate and deploy the spikes right in front of the gate. So as soon as the enemy breaks down the gate, they run right into the spikes.



^that is what I had left after the entire army attempted to run through the gates.

Works so well against the Mongols, that all there calvary died before it got to my infantry.

And why do the battering rams never ever get destroyed. I have ballista towers, cannon towers, and 5 archer units shooting at it, and it doesnt take enough damage. it might be that the real damage dealers are shooting at the two seige towers and if all my towers were to concentrate on the battering ram, it would work.

I think as far as the mongols go, using the pikes would be better than preventing them from breaking down the gate because their calvary is still alive whenever they run out of infantry and retreat.

One thing I think they should implement is the ability for cannon to be placed on top of walls where there is enough room to fit them. The funky things that jut out that are currently usless but easily have enough space to fit a cannon team or what have you.

yeah there are some areas of the walls that have 'platforms' imho they should let cannons in these areas at least....

mortars are the best you can use them to fire over walls easy.... now if they only had flaming /semi explosive ammo....

you're using fire ammo right?

Call me snobby, but I think that "abusing" things in the game like putting stakes in front of the door is lame. The stakes are for battlefields, and should only be used in open battles I think.

Meh, beat the Mongols how you want.

not really abusing it.... it only affect calvary really.... generally it's not a good idea to charge a small area with horse, as you are limiting one of it's greatest strengths, mobility...

3-4 towers and some cannon can make holes in the walls and get your men in on top....

you shouldn't really use calvary in sieges much....

In addition, the mongols are attacking me with 8 archer infantry units and the rest calvary, that will never work anyway.

nice, i was wondering where those guys where.....


btw beat the long grand campaign with england, allied with the poland and mongols 45 territories + Jerusalem,

France, Milan, Scotland, portugal wiped out thanks to me, HRE down to 1 territory, Spain down to 3, the Danes down to 3 or 4.... about to become a vassal.... I'll try that with Spain and HRE too....


have a fleet headed to the new world....

How did you get the New World thing going?

I just beat the game as Spain, but still neither hide nor hair of the ship technology I'll need or any reference to it. (Or to the Timurids, dammit!)

comes later in the game, 'the world is round!!' or something, then you can build the final level of shipyard for carracks, etc and the map expands

I've done nothing but play this game for the last two days.

I don't know why the fuck I decided to go with France- I suppose for an early Napoleonic caprice or something, but it's gotten really shitty lately. I just got excommunicated and I'm being attacked on two sides. I probably should've started with ships a little earlier, actually. Oh well.

The diplomacy in this game is a lot more complicated than in the old one, and I almost loathe clicking through my long list of agents and moving them around. At least I've got merchants trading silk- is there anything more profitable on the map?

Also, is there anything besides more buildings that will control all this "squalor" nonsense?

sugar and silk are about equal i've noticed.... chocolate, tobacco, gold, and cotten all seem to be about the same...

i try to cap my cities around 30-40K max by tax control....

huge cathedrals give a nice health bonus....

got my spies out trying to find the timuridis(sp?).

I basically am finishing off the little factions on my borders and getting rdy for the biggers ones outside my borders. The mongols are gonna have a heck of a time with the timuridins. To bad I wiped out several of there major armies and generals. Gonna bunker down my eastern front and wait to see where the timuridans advance.

I want to get down to egypt just for shits and giggles.

What kind of systems are you guys running and at which settings?

I have AMD 3200 + and a 6600 GT ( I Think)

It ran Rome:TW fine, but the demo of this plays like crap.

I had all of Western Europe, Poland, the Byzantine Empire, Turkey, Africa, and the Middle East under my control (pretty much just the British isles and Russia were left). Then the Timurids came. I've managed to keep them beaten down into a handful of Middle Eastern terroritories, but since all of my really good cities (and thus units) are back west it takes me forever to get a decent army over there, and even with my best units I generally lose the battle. All I can count on is that I can outproduce them.

I'm raping the Aztecs pretty good, too.

Actually, it could be.

This game runs surprisingly well on lower end systems.

I used to run this game pretty well on this:

p4 2.0 ghz
756 mb ram
ATI 9800 pro.

So if you have a good graphics card, it might carry you through. Worked for me.

i could barely run the demo on my machine.

AMD64x2 4800+
2gb DDR2
Nvidia GeForce 7800GTX
Raptor (10k RPM) WD hdd...

lagged like crazy to the point where i couldn't play but i think that was due to the fact that i was trying to run it on Vista RC1. I'm hoping RC2 is better for gaming. All my games have suffered greatly in performance since i've rolled over to Vista

I definitly can't wait to get this game though...hopefully it will run flawlessly on my macbook pro.

best way to deal with mongols and timurids is not on the open field but slaughter them when they try to invade a city of yours... stock up on defensive units...

ahhh the majesty of pikemen, wooden stakes, cannon towers, and a crapload of archers, and some assorted heavy infantry....

pwnt solid... out of 1100 in the attacking force, 600 died before they even reached the walls and 400+ died at the gate or running away... 82 got away

Once again that is a cheap lame tactic if you ask me, and not impressive. Who can't place stakes in front of your gate and maul the enemy.

If you have to resort to that to win, I would come bragging.

more bragging about the insane kills i got before they even reached the gates... the spikes are only effective against cavalry... the pikemen devestated the infantry and horse that came through.... i had some swordsmen units to keep them boxed in and then squeezed it...

what kinda idiot assults castles with horse anyways? when they knock holes in the wall i just plug it with a spear militia and have 2 back it up and they can't get through that either... using pikemen in such an instance would only be more effective.... hell i could have just had the pikemen up so they couldnt even pass the gate... could have them 8 ranks deep.... it would have the same effect.... horse runs in idiotically and gets impaled on 18ft pikes...

No, it's not really about historical accuracy.

It's mostly about just changing the dynamics of some of the things, and adding a bunch of new units.

So I'm working with the idea of making units recruitable in America for all factions, rather than just Spain and Portugal.

The first one is the Byzantines, knowing the Roman Empire's tendency to use auxiliary warriors from conquered nations, I created these units.

nice work man...

i had a recent battle involving a fort, i was defending. Timurids attacking, fort comes with stakes in patches around the walls. they knock 2 holes in the wall which i plug with merc pikemen and heavy infantry (2H weapon fix ftw) they pretty much annihilate one of 2 forces that attacked me... the other just sat there.... i dunno why... time eventually ran out.... my archers pwnt a few elephants which is nice...

swiss pikemen recruiting in bern! plz!!! lol


maybe heavy pikemen / armored pikemen like they had in MTW....

annoying how the pike phalanx machanics are pretty piss poor when mobile.... i could see it being more effective stopped (first row crouches) but come on, the pike mechanics are all screwy.... only a few heavy infantry should even have a chance of getting past the front of the spear wall.... counter for pikes would be flanking (slow moving when in phalanx/ spear wall formation ) more pikes, or arrows (only limited defences vs projectiles (spear wall actually helps some so like +1 def vs arrows compared to gunpowder units which it would get only armor (minimal) defense for....

enough ranting, i just see gunpowder and pikes being good late period counters to heavy horse, where before basic spears where your only choice and they more or less get pwnt by heavy infantry...

i do like what you have been doing though... isn't there some unit unpacker thing coming out? (or did it come with the latest patch?)

It came out with the patch.

You have to unpack EVERYTHING though, takes a LONG time and ends up making your M2TW folder around 15 gigs.

And about the pikes, there is a mod (or a change you can make yourself) that can make them more efffective. It simply removes their swords, and makes them use the pikes.

It makes them crazy overpowered though, so their attack power needs to be toned down.

true, but it's a pretty logical sequence actually, things went from spear phalanx to calvary/heavy horse dominant to pikes and gunpowder being dominant... but yeah bumping down the attack power to like 10-12 would be a good idea.... even more so for heavy pikes (pikes with armor and thus a +1 value to charge...

very nice job though man... ill have to test out your stuff shortly

timurands (sp?) are wooping up on the mongols. I have ruffly a line of citadels going north and south that they will run into if they ever try to come my way. I think its odd that the mongols and timurands went east, when ive heard some of you say they went down towards egypt. But, I did make the mongols come my way by calling a crusade on them, which made all the western nations declare war, which made the mongols come at us hard.
