^ F '02 was my first semester at NCSU. Now I'm down to just my dissertation left for my PhD.

^^ Tonight, Indy beat a Myers Park team which has a losing record by only 7 points. Earlier in the season, they won a game 21-20 by stopping a 2-point conversion attempt in the last minute. Based on this season alone, if anything, they should be ranked lower.

Fuquay-Varina 29, Cary 21

Both undefeated going into the game. The only real competition HC has had and will have for the rest of the year. Undefeated here we come.

Where did South View drop to? I know they got beat by Swett and Pine Forest, two losses to not-so-great teams. And Gray's Creek, where are they? They only lost to Harnett Central
(by giving up 21 straight points late), and St. Pauls (by 1)?

South View dropped from #18 to #39 after the first loss, and from #30 to #55 after the second one. They are currently at #58, but could be a real headache for a first-round opponent!

Gray's Creek is not in the top 100; they've played a very weak schedule, with only two top-200 opponents. They beat Terry Sanford early in the year, lost to a mediocre-at-best St. Paul's team, and then loaded up on cupcakes in the very soft Cape Fear Valley 3A until meeting Harnett Central (a competitive loss against an outstanding team actually helped their ranking). They'll get a decent seed in the playoffs, but are likely to get knocked out in the first or second round, if they get a tough draw at all.

I'm sorry, but how do you have a 2-6 team (Freedom) ranked in the top 10 of any region, ahead of teams like Bandys, East Lincoln, etc.?

Freedom is an unusual case; they are a good football team, despite their losing record. They started 0-6, playing the most difficult non-conference schedule I've ever seen in 15+ years following NC high school football.

Here are their first six games (rankings are out of 350+ teams statewide)
at #2 Shelby (L, 37-19)
at #18 Crest (L, 61-7)
(top 100) Roberson (L, 24-21)
#43 Asheville (L, 36-3)
at #57 Watauga (L, 14-7)
#5 A.C. Reynolds (L, 28-17)

There are conference championship contenders (and at least one 4A conference champion) that would have gone 0-6 or 1-5 against that schedule. If Freedom wins their last two games, they will make the playoffs, and will be a very dangerous opponent for some conference's champion.

Big games locally...
Broughton (6-3, 3-1) at Wakefield (6-4, 1-4) -- Broughton must win to stay in the Cap-7 race
Apex (5-4, 2-2) at Fuquay-Varina (7-2, 4-0) -- F-V can claim Tri-8 title outright with a win
Knightdale (5-4, 3-1) at East Wake (6-2, 2-2) -- Winner gets 3rd in Greater Neuse, important for playoff seeding

Around the state...
#7 G'boro Dudley (8-1, 4-0) at #17 Western Alamance (9-1, 5-0) -- For Triad 3A conf. championship
#40 W-S Parkland (8-1, 2-1) at #12 W-S Carver (8-1, 3-0) -- Carver wins Pied. Triad 3A with a win
#33 West Forsyth (8-2, 5-0) at #26 Davie Co. (8-1, 3-1) -- WF wins Cent. Piedmont 4A outright with a win
#35 Franklin (9-0, 4-0) at #43 Asheville (5-3, 3-1) -- For Mountain Athletic 3A conf. title

Upset watch...
Asheville over Franklin (see above)
Middle Creek (4-6) over Athens Drive (7-2)

Blowout watch...
#9 Thomasville (9-0) at North Moore (0-9) -- T'ville could score 100 if they wanted to
#28 Fay. Seventy-First (6-3) at Pinecrest (0-9) -- Again, showing class might keep it to 55-0
Andrews (1-8) at Cherokee (8-0)
#10 Burlington Cummings (8-1) at Raleigh Cardinal Gibbons (3-5)
#8 Wallace-Rose Hill (9-0) at Midway (2-6)

The 2000 Flushes Bowl...
Western Harnett (0-9) vs. Spring Lake Overhills (0-9)

How can Broughton possibly win the Cap-7? Leesville has the head to head over ALL the teams. (Except Wake Forest - Rollesville, who they play next friday night).

With Leesville being undefeated, and at least one of everyone's loss in conference being to Leesville, I don't see how Leesville could possibly beat Cap-7 Champions. Even if Broughton ties leesville record wise, leesville has the head to head.

The key is that WFR has only one conference loss. If WFR beats Millbrook and Leesville, and Broughton beats Wakefield and Sanderson, then there would be a 3-way-tie for the championship, with WFR, Broughton, and Leesville all 5-1 in the conference and 1-1 against the other two. Officially, they would be tri-champions, and a 3-way-draw would determine the order for playoff-seeding purposes.

^^ Officially, any team tied for the best record in the conference is a conference champion (i.e. co-champs, tri-champs, etc.) regardless of the head-to-head results. So, Leesville has already clinched at least a share of the conference title. To answer your question, they CAN lock up the #1 seed from the conference for playoff purposes tomorrow night, if WFR loses, but that isn't likely as WFR is a 2-touchdown favorite against Millbrook.

^ Garner is good this year; they are 8-1 and about to win their conference again. They've only been challenged 3 times all season: a disappointing 14-9 upset loss at Durham Riverside, a hard-fought 25-21 win over likely Tri-8 champ Fuquay-Varina, and a 14-0 win last week over a solid East Wake team.

^^^^^ It's always cool to see long-suffering teams get it together and have success. We've had four big turnarounds locally in just the last 2 years (F-V, Athens, Hillside, Leesville). East Gaston also has a big game tomorrow night...I missed two of those in the Charlotte area:
#15 Charlotte Latin (9-0) at #31 Charlotte Country Day (7-2) -- They're private schools, but both are good
#18 Boiling Springs Crest (7-2, 3-1) at #30 East Gaston (8-1, 4-0) -- With a win, EG takes the Big South, arguably the state's toughest conference this year.

^^^^ Dudley vs. WA is probably the biggest game in the state this week. Both have the talent to make deep playoff runs.

^^ Being the PA announcer at Fuquay-Varina, my opinion may be biased! We have a solid team, our best in a decade, but don't have a signature win over a great team. We've played 2 top-notch teams, Harnett Central (with Rodney Cox) and Garner, and lost to both. We're looking at a high seed in the 4A east, but by the 2nd or 3rd round, could get knocked off my a runner-up or lower from a stronger conference than ours. Sam Jones is big and athletic, but is not a dominating player for us (but we play him almost exclusively on the O-line, and those guys don't get noticed much). For State, I agree that he will probably play DE, perhaps even DT if he keeps growing.

I don't follow recruiting much, and I follow teams, not individuals, so I can really only tell you about the players I've seen in person. Apex is coming to F-V this week, and we don't play EW, so I don't know anything about either of those guys. I will say that Rodney Cox is the best player I've seen all year, but I think he'd make a better WR in college than a QB.

For any of you planning to go to games tomorrow night, be aware that the game-time forecast is for 50s and lots of rain, so I suspect that many games will be pushed back to Saturday or Monday.

^^ I remember Southern Nash running an unusual hide-the-ball offense about 10-15 years ago. Didn't they have a coach die in mid-season one year (which also happened this week at Southern Alamance)?

^ Providence is 5-4, but in my top 50 because of a tough schedule, with 6 top-50 opponents. They need to beat Myers Park (who is 4-5, but played Indy close at 31-24 last week) tomorrow night to finish 3rd in the brutal Southwestern 4A conference, which would help their playoff seed.

My favorite web site for HS football in NC is http://www.ncpreps.com. It's known primarily for its' message boards, but also has a lot of reference info, such as scores and schedules.

yes, Algie Faircloth. There is a small monument under the scoreboard for him. He coached us to conference championships in '89, '90 and died in '91 I believe before we won our third straight. The year after his death was probably the best ever at Southern. They lost only 1 game that year and it was in the 4th round of the playoffs to the eventual state champion.

^ I was a junior at Raleigh Enloe in '91; I thought that happened when I was in high school. Last Monday night, Southern Alamance had to play a game two days after their coach (who died in an auto accident on I-85) was buried. Teenagers take tragedy so hard; I can't imagine having to play a football game so soon after the death of someone that close. It was difficult for many of our kids at F-V to get mentally prepared to play a game the week of the Sept. 11 attacks, and none of them even knew anyone who died.

Shaw University's marching band will be playing the halftime show at the Apex-FV game on Saturday night, and it's only 25 minutes' drive from campus to Fuquay-Varina HS. Come out to see the Bengals (with NCSU recruit Sam Jones), as well as a great band!

The Cap-7 games were played tonight:
Broughton 17, Wakefield 14
WF-R 21, Millbrook 3

The championship comes down to two games on the last night of the season, next Friday:
Leesville Road at Wake Forest-Rolesville
Sanderson at Broughton

If Leesville beats WF-R, then the Pride wins the conference championship outright.
If WF-R beats Leesville, and Broughton loses, then WF-R and Leesville are co-champs, but WFR gets the #1 seed.
If WF-R beats Leesville and Broughton wins, then all 3 are tri-champs, and a draw will determine seeds.

No joke. But really, they won the Mega-7 the year before I got there. My sophomore year we were 0-10.

AH SHIT. Southern Nash lost to the number 4 team in the state....SW Edgecombe, because we can't kick a fucking extra point. Not only that, but when its in a monsoon, somebody gets discombobulated.

final score SW Edgecombe 7 (they have a good kicker!)
Southern Nash 6 (We have a soccer player!)

only in high school football/ otherwise it was a pretty damn good game filled with many many hits....

I saw SW Edgecombe play Southern Vance this year. That wishbone offense they run is just nasty. They take you out there and beat the hell out of you.

Fuquay-Varina 28, Apex 0

After a scoreless first half, F-V broke it open in the 3rd quarter. With the win, the Bengals lock up the Tri-8 championship outright.

And the Shaw University "Platinum Sound" marching band rocked the house!
