The prof is right ... you either drop now or seriously kiss ass and do A+ work. If you don't drop the class and it looks like you're going to fail the best you can hope for is some benevolent being (dean of whatever college the class is in) is going to let you change that one class to audit or credit only so it won't affect your GPA, but usually they want explanations, and a week in Vegas probably isn't going to get you very far. 9/15/2006 2:22:35 PM |

I didn't read the five pages, but I have to say you are soooo wrong and the professor is soooo right. You made an agreement when you registered for the class... honor it and stop acting like a spoiled brat. You are way out of line thinking of trying to get somebody to put pressure on him. 9/15/2006 6:22:21 PM |

Actually, I thought the same way about such stuff when I was an undergrad as well. I'm not trying to be mean, I just feel strongly that this is a frivolous idea. 9/15/2006 6:34:49 PM |

what lesson do i have to learn here? not that i can blame you for not reading the thread, but i am fully aware that he has no obligation to help me out here. if it comes to it, i'll just take the 0 and do what i have to do to come out on top in the end, but you can't blame me for trying.
if it has to do with me mentioning going to outside sources to resolve the issue, i regret ever saying it. i only mentioned it because i figured someone would suggest going over his head, but i'm not the kind of person to do that, especially not when he's in the right.
i've been through a lot growing up and am probably more "socially aware" than the average kid my age, so resist the urge to judge me based on the limited information you've gleaned from this thread. 9/15/2006 7:16:12 PM |

i realize that this response isn't helpful to you at this point, but it's never a good idea to plan to skip a class until you know it's okay for sure. case in point, 2 people in my vet school class skipped a lab to fly to the notre dame/penn state game, and now they get an incomplete for the whole course, have to take this one 3 hr lab with next year's class, and there's a course that we are supposed to take 1st quarter next year that they won't be able to take until 2nd quarter when they've completed the lab. lesson learned i guess! 9/15/2006 8:11:07 PM |

OK, I think you should cancel the trip, or if you can't for some reason then drop the class and take it again next year, maybe with a few grad courses to make it look good. You are obviously very bright, but unless you are sure you can ace the class if you get a zero, you are taking a big risk... employers / grad schools are going to get suspicious of an anonymously bad grade in the senior year, and if they smell "unreliable" (immature) you are going to get passed over. At least that's what people I've worked with/for would do to you... 9/15/2006 8:35:19 PM |

Ah, that makes a lot of sense. This class is an intro-level class for my major though, and most (if not all) the material is old hat to me. As such, I'm fairly certain acing the rest of the class won't be an issue, and I've handled the situation such that I believe I'm still in my professor's good graces. I think he'll help me out come December with my overall grade, and I'd much rather suffer a slight drop in performance than delay completion of the class yet another year.

Teachers are people too. Sometimes we actually do feel sympathy for students and understand certain situations are unavoidable (even if its a fun family trip).
I would probably be a hardass about it exactly like your professor, but if you worked extremely hard the rest of the semester, I might be willing to help you out. Although, I wouldn't expect much in the way of a handout. My idea of helping out is decimal points: giving you a B- (79.54 = 80) over a C+ (79.44=79). And I know a lot of teachers who feel that way as well. 9/16/2006 11:48:10 AM |
