David, you're right -- we definitely had a better idea of the numbers to expect than last year. The difference was that last year the most people we ever had to handle at the Krispy Kreme store was maybe 40 or 50 people. This year, we were preparing to handle 800 people in 20 minutes. Almost everything at the store went smoothly (except for the water coolers....we underestimated how fast they would run out) because we spent so much time in preparation.
I don't worry about hosting costs. I knew back in November that things were going to get too big to run it off a NCSU webspace account with static html pages. I had some extra room so I just got the site going on my account. We thought too late to transfer the domain name to my account, so that's why you'd see http://www.saketvora.com/kkc/ etc etc in the url bar. We're going to fix that for next year.
I'll post links over the next couple days about places where people can post photos on Flickr and such. We'd love to see your photos and videos from the event. If you get any videos onto YouTube, please share the link! 1/28/2007 1:59:30 AM |

There is a video up on WRAL's main page. The news outlets can't get the facts straight. He said the challenge was to complete the race in under two hours. Another article said the race was 4 miles each way, and had to be completed in an hour. Can't they take a break from murders and traffic accidents long enough to do a halfway decent job of covering a human interest story? 1/28/2007 1:19:27 PM |

Posted: Jan. 26, 2007
RALEIGH, N.C. — A weekend run to benefit a children's hospital could have participants wishing they were in a hospital bed by the time they're done.
It's called The Krispy Kreme Challenge, and it's expected that some 1,000 runners will gather for the event Saturday morning. Proceeds will benefit the North Carolina Children's Hospital.
It works like this: Runners will start at the Memorial Bell Tower on the North Carolina State University campus. They'll run two miles from the tower to the Krispy Kreme restaurant on Peace Street on the edge of the state government complex. Once at the restaurant, runners have to eat a dozen Krispy Kreme doughnuts.
Once they've downed the sweet treats, they have to run the two miles back to the bell tower.
And, by the way, they have to do it all in less than an hour.
N.C. State senior Peyton Hassinger did the eat-and-run event in 42 minutes, but he says not everyone has to eat the doughnuts." |

Except that we commonly excuse this mentality in virtually every aspect of life. Cheating is not excused simply because an event is tied to a charitable cause. What about the "Race for the Cure" 5K? It raises money for cancer research. Does that mean it's fair game for folks to take a shortcut on the course? Why anyone would cheat in an event with no prize money and no real opportunity for gain is baffling. If you didn't legitimately complete the course as specified, do the honorable thing and go to the casual runner side, cheater. You cheapen it for everyone else.
^Unfortunately, no. You can police the top contenders, but there's no way to monitor all those people. I suppose you could have someone on vomit patrol with a disqualification stamp in hand. You could eliminate all trash cans on site, except the bags manned by volunteers, to ensure that doughnuts are not thrown away and then claimed to have been eaten. Anyone leaving the store with doughnuts in hand should be eliminated as a challenger. There really is a way to satisfy both the competitors and those that are just out there for a good time.

The primary goal, from the organizers' perspective, is for people to have a good time. That being said, we clearly recognize that there are very competitive people who take the challenge and finishing times very seriously. We are still exploring ways to improve the way this event is run. Please remember, last year we had 150 people show up and ran the people in heats of 20-30 people. This proved difficult because some people had to wait nearly 1.5 hours before starting. So we decided to run everyone at the same time, which adds a lot of fun and craziness to it. We also felt we could ensure more people got hot donuts. Then you and the Raleigh community embraced this event like we never expected. We're already planning for next year's event, and it will be bigger and better than ever.
Bottom though, we want this to be lighthearted and fun. Do we want donut cops wielding black markers closely following every single competitive challenger around at the store and along the race course to make sure they don't ever throw up? For 200+ 'serious' challengers? No. We want this to be fun. Send your comments and feedback to krispykremechallenge@gmail.com. Myself and the two other head organizers are graduating this May, so a great group of freshman are taking the helm. 1/31/2007 12:42:54 AM |

I don't have any complaints for the organizers. You guys did a great job. I just don't understand the attitudes of some would-be competitors. If you know you didn't legitimately complete the race, do you derive more fun from pretending you did? I sure don't.
Haha. I like the idea of doughnut cops. We could employ real cops. They could pistol whip cheaters. 1/31/2007 12:49:50 AM |

N.C. State students are learning it's possible to eat a box of donuts and stay in shape at the same time. This week the school held the third annual Krispy Kreme Challenge, an event where competitors have one hour to run two miles, eat a box of donuts, and then run the two miles back. The event is a fundraiser for the North Carolina Children's Hospital and in just three years the number of competitors has gone from a dozen to over 1,300. I'm a big fan of this event, not only because it's for a good cause, but because it also gives college kids a chance to vomit from something other that alcohol. 2/2/2007 9:35:43 AM |

I've questioned how dangerous this event actually is. I'm sure it's worse than an ordinary 4 mile race, but how many people would have to be running before you saw heart attacks and stuff? Or does it really make a big difference what you eat directly before you exercise? 2/19/2007 8:00:46 PM |
