Quote : | "I hope you aren't one that buys any clothes from anywhere other than Goodwill" |
not counting socks, shoes and underwear [read: shelter (basics of life)]
and not counting unsolicited gifts from family
most all of my clothes are second-hand (yet, nice quality)
but that misses the point
the point was that
1) your guy bought you a ring instead of the other way around or both, hence patriarchy (patriarchy is wrong)
2) the symbol you chose for your marriage is an excessively expensive (>$10) adornment (materialism is wrong)
3) jewelry has no legitimate role in life. period. (except art)
Quote : | "Like I said, you must have never been in a GOOD relationship. Clearly all of yours have ended because you seem like a big jackass." |
why don't you lick my fucking balls, you bigoted bitch
oh, and I ended all but one of them
Quote : | "Even if you think women agree with you 100%, I would bet money they are just saying that, and you would find out later they feel differently." |
which is at least one reason I ended some of the relationships
(are you proud for pointing out that some women are deceptive materialists?)
Quote : | "So get of your high horse and get a life" |
wahhh waaaaaah
did I upset you by calling you out for being a patriarchal materialist? oh I'm soo sorrry
Quote : | "If you don't care about engagement rings, then don't post in this thread. Simple as that" |
oh but I do care
I care about how stupid and unnecessary they are, and how people who buy them are stupid fucking tools
Quote : | "I was proud to buy my wife a nice ring, it is a symbol of my love for her, not necessarily a financial showing but just a damn fine ring" |
oh and, the fact that nearly everyone does the same didn't influence your choosing a ring?
admit it, you are participating in a old useless tradition.
why? just because -- because presumably it's "what you do", because "OMG YOU SHOULDN'T BREAK TRADITION!!!"
why don't you just give her dad some cows as a dowry?
Quote : | "....though it's still one of the only nonverbal indicators of "I'm taken."" |
iow, an implicit endorsement opposing polygamy and polyamory (which aren't wrong)
Quote : | "Wanting a ring .... doesn't mean we're automatically "materialistic whores with 12 purses and 4 jewelry boxes," either. Chill the fuck out." |
why don't you chill the fuck out
you're the one putting words in my mouth
I was clearly speaking about the type of women that I don't want to be in a serious relationship with
not [all] women in general
Quote : | "No, it does not." |
yes it does
what reason is there for jewelry?
every instance of jewelry purchase (except art, as I mentioned) could instead be donations to charities
donations to charities are helpful and good, jewelry purchases are pointless and materialistic
Quote : | "1) No, it doesn't." |
yes it does
Quote : | "What, happy? Thanks, boo" |

^^^^^ I often mix up gender role stuff on purpose, like when I posted about a girl asking a guy's mom for permission to propose
here's a thought:
why not get an engagement pair of his and her tattoos ?
even if you're not the "tattoo type", a small ring tattoo or something would be good
after all, marriage is supposed to be forever, right?
ps
(I didn't mean to be a douche in this thread, I'm just REALLY fucking opposed to patriarchy, even symbolic)

^^^^dudes dont get something when they get engaged? i thought women got a ring and dudes got a band or something?
is the engagement ring the ring you use when you get married? or do women expect a dude to buy them an engagement ring AND wedding ring?(serious question)...also, if that is true(question i just asked), for the people that want fancy ass rings, do you expect an even fancier wedding ring, or if the guy spends a lot on the engagement ring is he allowed to not get an expensive wedding ring?] 1/6/2008 4:37:10 PM |

oh so when cansnuts is talking about that she does not consider being engaged, because her man wont get her a ring(which i feel is dumb as shit), she is talking about the ring with a big ass rock...and THEN when she gets married, she will receive a less showy band?
and just for the record, dudes dont get anything when they get engaged? 1/6/2008 4:43:36 PM |

sometimes the woman can buy the man a watch or something to that effect.
but i'd say guys are getting off with a pretty good deal since the woman's family pays for the wedding. (which 95% of the time costs a lot more than the ring.) 1/6/2008 5:32:25 PM |

^^ a lot of couples choose to pay for their own weddings now. but yes, it is traditional for the man's family to do rehersal dinner. women's family to do wedding. man/man's family/sometimes both do honeymoon.
^
i don't even know if i want an engagement ring or a wedding. i mean like every girl i love the thought of it all, but then when i think about it in actuality, i have a lot of personal and moral reservations about the whole idea. 1/6/2008 6:19:05 PM |

I take " " very personally.
but anyway, the wife's parents paying for the wedding is a tradition that goes hand in hand with many of the older traditions that aren't strictly followed anymore. 1/7/2008 12:03:38 AM |

More likely the tradition had turned into the parents not chipping in a cent but the woman's mom wanting to have an opinion on everything and putting them through a level of hell that makes the couple consider suicide be drowning in animal feces to be a kind death.
And strangely, women still expect rings. 1/7/2008 1:02:51 AM |

Speaking as a very traditional girl, the ring is important to me. I want a pretty one that sparkles and I can show off to my friends and family. But I'm also not saying I want 2 carats on my finger. That's ridiculous. My bf also knows that I would be livid, and even consider saying no, if he gave me a ring he couldn't afford or if he proposed before the two of us were financially ready to be in a marraige.
Also, I'm buying him an incredible guitar once I get the ring. It's only fair. 1/7/2008 9:41:25 AM |

So i know my gf wants yellow gold, and ive had her send me links from multiple different sites with rings she liked (i didnt care about the price i was just trying to gauge her style). she sent me a lot of rings with diamond accents in the settings. i kind of put this ring together on blue nile today going off of that:
the stone i selected for now is just a .65 carat but the cut is the highest i could get, and the other options were good as well. ill probably break down for a bigger one when i actually decide on a ring, but with the non-linear price curve i cant justify shelling out some of the extra money to keep making smaller gains in size.
she also has really small hands tho, and even some of the half carats we tried on looked very well sized on her finger

So, one of my friends just learned the hard way about buying titanium. He just lost a bunch of weight all over his body thanks to developing a heart condition, and his wedding band doesn't fit right any more, so he had to get one of those doofy plastic spacers in it, since the entire thing would need to be recast for him to change the size. Diamonds are forever? No, titanium is forever. 2/7/2008 2:51:58 PM |

any recommendations on where to go for a wedding band? Also, does anyone have any recommendations about what kind of band would be best for a person that occasionally does physical labor and doesn't want a band that will scratch easily? I could care less about the ring having a polish or shine to it, but I don't want to scratch it up the first time I jump on a piece of equipment or climb over a fence. 2/7/2008 10:39:06 PM |
