Although this article doesn't say it, the scientist/beach rater is a State grad.

I think someone brought that article up before, but i don't think we had any idea it was written by a state grad! Notice how it says "nation's top beach", not "nation's best money maker built on top of a beach".

Stephen Leatherman, nicknamed "Dr. Beach," is the director of the Florida International University coastal research lab. Each Memorial Day weekend since 1991, Leatherman has released a list of the top beaches in the United States, determined by weighing 50 factors. As of 2006, these lists had achieved sufficient prominence to merit reporting in various national media outlets.

1. Ocracoke Lifeguarded Beach, Outer Banks, North Carolina - National Winner 2. Caladesi Island State Park, Dunedin/Clearwater, Florida 3. Coopers Beach, Southampton, New York 4. Hanalei Bay, Kauai, Hawaii 5. Coast Guard Beach, Cape Cod, Massachusetts 6. Hamoa Beach, Maui, Hawaii 7. Main Beach, East Hampton, New York 8. Coronado Beach, San Diego, California 9. Lighthouse Point Park, Daytona Beach, Florida 10. Siesta Beach, Sarasota, Florida
That seems a little better.

yeah...last time i checked...the OBX were definitely in the top 10 6/11/2007 1:24:57 PM |
HUR All American 17732 Posts user info edit post |
i would definitely be more tolerant of ocracoke then myrtle beach as #1 but i would still disagree. The whole concept is relative and depends on what you want to get out of a vacation.
If i want the best beach to camp out and get back to nature a place like Cape Lookout other OBX would be great; I definitely wouldn't be going to Myrtle or Daytona Beach
If the goal is a fun family vacation with the kiddies then Myrtle Beach may be on the list but I think other places would top it out.
If the plan is a romantic get-a-way with my wife/girlfriend then Hawaii , St. Kitts, etc would be ideal
Further as a crazy college student looking to get drunk and hook up w/ some nasty sluts then the best places would be like cancun, bahamas, Miami,
etc

No need to argue because its all about liking your baked potatoe plain while most enjoy, butter, sour cream, cheese, bacon bits, broc, some actually hate condiments, seasoning and anything that has a flavor. My main question is what are you going to do at the good beaches when rains come down from the sky?

^ You really think so? I haven't done much research on it, but i've read that most property owners at Myrtle beach are local. Just because northerns buy a few expensive condos, and some investors start up some condos doesn't mean it's the majority by far. 6/12/2007 2:18:25 PM |

I'm still never going to move to a place that's 82% White, average income of 23,000$, and 12% under the poverty line (17.1% under 18 years of age under poverty line).
Not to mention it ranks 6th most dangerous metropolitan area in the United States http://www.morganquitno.com/cit07pop.htm#METRO (under metropolitan areas)
I don't know how else to define white trash.

where you gonna go where hotel, restaurant, amusement, and entertainment workers make more than 23k? What do you think they should be making?
Most of the people who own there don't actually live and work there anyway. They are part of the 14 million trailer trash that owns a beachfront home and goes there each year for vacation.

Dude where are you getting your stats from. You go to california, florida or hawaii and i guranntee most entertainment workers, waiters etc are making over 50 grand a year. Hell i know some stagehands in California who are making 40-50 dollars an hour (much much more than 50k/year). Hell entertainers? Are you kidding? You know how much dancers and performers make? One of my friends just got off a cruise line doing costumes and these people make mad money, enough to relax when they arn't on a cruise (again far more than 50k/year).

THE AVERAGE is 23k. When you have a vast majority of those people maids, janitors and people who just live in myrtle beach for fun it brings it down. most entertainment workers are not the actual entertainers. Also keep in mind that everything is slow offseason and not always busy in even the peak season because there are so many competing businesses. That plust the fact that there is no industry in this 99% tourist area. 6/13/2007 1:16:57 PM |
neodata686 All American 11577 Posts user info edit post |
Yeah i realize this, but if you compared how much entertainers/waiters/maids etc make at Myrtle beach compared to other places like anywhere in California, or New England, you'd realize that the ones at Myrtle beach make the least.

I go to wrightsville b.c
1.) I have lots of friends there that let me stay for free. 2.) Is a college town not the Redneck trailor trash capital of the South East 3.) Has nice bar scene and do not have to wait behind some 18 yr old teeny bopper to get in. 4.) No Biker Week (black or white) 5.) Hot girls at the beach that are not covered in tattoos (at least for the most part see #2) 6.) Beach is not littered with Busch light cans. (alcohol is not permitted on wrightsville but usually if you put it in a solo cup the cops will not bother you) 7.) Wild Wing Cafe 8.) A Wings or whatever the fucking other store is called gets annoying every 1/2 mile down the road
About the only thing better about Myrtle Beach is... 1.) Often are some good shows at house of blues 2.) More difficult to pick up high school chicks 6/25/2007 10:52:26 PM |

In my experience if you drink on the beach most of the police will turn a blind eye to it. Just don't be doing anything stupid or blatantly drawing attention to yourself. Obviously you'll be doing this at your own risk and I don't really recommend it. There are a lot of hotel and pool bars that are right on the beach. Go to these instead. You will meet a lot of people this way.
I recommend you go to Broadway at the Beach. This time of year its in full swing and there is basically something for everyone there. You can also walk around with your drink as long as its within the designated area.
This is a good place to search for bars and restaurants. It gives short reviews and an idea of what to expect:
