well you're still wrong. Assuming the taller buildigns aren't skinnier, which they might be. two 60story buildings is 120. two 30 story buildings is 60 and 3 20 story buildings is also 60. I'm pretty sure that two at least of those 20 story buildings are wider than the 60 story buildings in Charlotte so that alone is more than those two buildings. sure charlottes downtown demolishes raleigh but thats because its a centralized city while raleigh has rtp, north hills, crabtree, and highwoods to go along with downtown and they are all still growing (except highwoods) and right now you have the 35 story at crabtree. 3 20+ stories at norht hills. rbc, and all the condos going up downtown so raleigh is narrowing that gap
Quote : | ""aren't THAT much bigger "" |
that bigger meaning bigger enough to beat the entire population of downtown raleigh. its ok to say they are much bigger but when you exagerate and make insane claims like that THEN ACTUALLY TRY TO BACK THEM UP you only make a complete fool of yourself

That's all i wanted to hear. Dude i love Raleigh, i go to school there. I'm not trying to put down Raleigh, i was simply saying that Charlotte's downtown is much much larger and more populous than Raleigh's downtown area.
In regard to the square footage i'll find out pretty soon. I'm pretty sure that the Bank of America building, the wachovia buildings, and the Hearst tower ALL are wider at the bottom than ANY of Raleigh's 3 tallest downtown buildings. I've heard this before from my GF's dad who either was the head architect or helped out on lots of buildings in uptown Charlotte. He did the panthers stadium too. One thing about Charlotte is that the city blocks are larger, so in turn many of the buildings were built wider, taller, and just bigger in general to Raleigh's. There's some of the blueprints at my gf's house, but next time i'm in David's office i'll check them out for ya.

well durrr
the same can be said about almost any tall building about pretty much every city.
rtp is the largest research park in the world. That has a huge strain on downtown. similar but inferior parks are in richmond, huntsville alabama and silicon valley
compare raleigh and its skyline to san jose and huntsville and it blows them away8/3/2007 4:09:49 PM |

yes i realize the substratum is below the topsoil, i was just making a comparison because you originally said that to try to prove why Raleigh's buildings weren't as big. Or atleast that's what i thought. What were your intentions when you said Raleigh was built on soft clay? 8/3/2007 4:21:08 PM |

Raleigh is not on bedrock. It is much more expensive to build taller buildings in Raleigh than it is in Charlotte, Manhattan or pretty much any other city with lots of tall buildings hense the tall buildings. 8/3/2007 4:38:43 PM |

^^^depending on the soil profile. the price of building skyscrapers varies. Its probably most expensive out west because of the earthquake precautions but other than that bedrock is the cheapest. manhattan is on solid bedrock thats why they built so many scrapers so early. Charlottes is much harder than raleigh's 8/6/2007 10:30:52 AM |

This thread makes me laugh.
Everyone I know that has lived as an adult in both cities agree that Charlotte is a bigger city and a better city. And I know quite a few people who have lived in both now, including myself.
Visit Raleigh and drive around, then visit Charlotte and drive around. Big difference IMO.
Besides, neither are a very large city anyways. So it's like we're comparing a 5 inch cock to a 6 inch cock. 8/6/2007 11:40:00 AM |

raleigh has a crazy small poorportion of shity areas. shutup about the charlotte skyline already. nobody cares about the skylline that doesn't make a good city. paris has no skyline.
and raleigh has just as many nba and nfl championships as charlotte and an nhl on top of that. more people care about the canes than the bobcats. the canes have some of the loudest fans in all of sports. actually they do hold the record 8/15/2007 4:05:47 AM |

I've worked and lived in both uptown Charlotte and downtown Raleigh. There is no question that Charlotte uptown is significantly larger and more urban. One can live in downtown Charlotte and not have a car. In fact, I did for a while.
The closest grocery store to downtown Raleigh is in Cameron Village which is a heavy hike.
Indeed, it is possible to live and work in downtown Charlotte and rarely go outside. The major gym, some shopping, condos and offfice buildings are all connected.
That having been said Raleigh is growing significantly faster than Charlotte. In addition, Raleigh-Cary is essentially one city in a way that Gastonia and Charlotte are not. North Raleigh will also probably merge fluidily into Durham before Charlotte merges into Rock Hill or Concord.
When they are "done" growing Charlotte will look more like Chicago with a central core, while Raleigh will look like LA.
I would not put a lot of stock into MSAs or CMSAs because this really is just a count of counties and not the actual boundaries of urban area. 12/5/2007 8:59:43 PM |

charlotte and the populated areas of concord are already pretty fluidly merged. you never even know youve left charlotte when you hit the parts off the highway in the built up areas of concord.
i grew up in charlotte and spent about 5 years in raleigh and i personally like raleigh better, but i think it has to do with the age and time period in my life i spent in each city.2/5/2008 2:02:05 PM |
