There is no doubt in my mind you'll do fine ... my first one i only finished because of my "eff you i can do anything i want" stubborn-ness and you seem like you may have the same thing going for you.

Good luck though!

and as i said in the other thread no ipod for me

I have in the past, not so much recently (mostly because I haven't been running).
I used it with a Nano, not a Touch, which includes a whole ton of workout options and training options. But it works surprisingly well. After calibrating the nike+ipod (you set it into calibration mode, then run 1/4 or 1/2 mile), it was consistently reporting to within 0.02 miles vs. my Garmin GPS. I thought going up/down hills would mess it up b/c your stride is different, but it all seems to even out in the end

i ended up getting the ipod touch and nike+ last night. i was reading online that nike recommends that you calibrate the sensor on the inside loop of a track. i dont really have access to a track and would prefer to calibrate on the treadmill since that is where i do the majority of my running. thoughts?

i also really like the idea of syncing to the nike+ website and joining groups and challenging friends. i know a few people who have one and im sure if i asked around i'd find more.

i plan to use the ipod touch while running at the gym and my shuffle (refurbished $40 1g) on outdoor runs which are usually races only. i know i cant use the nike+ with the shuffle for outdoor runs (races) but we'll see...

don't.
Treadmills are usless for accurately judging distance or pace (i.e. don't believe it when the treadmill claims you've been running 5:45 pace for the last 30 minutes).

if you can't get to a track (or a GPS unit), use mapmyrun.com or another run-mapping site, and find a straight, flat peice of road and map out 1/4 or 1/2 mile on the site. Look at the satelite view to know exactly where to start and stop.

^ the nike+ipod is $30.
you don't necessarily have to use Nike shoes. You will get a small transmitter. You can either take your normal shoes and take the insole out and dig out a small pocket out of the sole to put the transmitter in. Or they sell little external pockets that you can put the transmitter and tie to your laces. I've heard these work pretty well, especially if you have a heavy stride. The transmitter has an accelerometer that just works on impact, so if it's tied to the top of your shoe, it will usually pick up each step.

Every person is going to be different. The Nike Pegasus has been around for a WHILE, and not because they look good! They're probably one of the more solid running shoes that Nike still makes.

I personally run in Asics, but it just depends on how your foot is shaped and your running gait.

my running shoes are new balance, i went to a running shoe store and got fitted for them, best decision ever!

i would be surprised if the iphone didnt have the reciever because the ipod touch does

either way, if you're going to get an iphone and the nike+ at least check first and save yourself $10

Good luck!

I thought about doing half marathons and such... I use to run 5Ks, but I lock up when I compete with other people. It makes me nervous like I will suck or something, but like the other day, I did a 5K in a little over 21 min and was like "damn, I need to run 5Ks again" But I just enjoy running

I am pretty happy now about knowing about these pouches to hold my Nike pedometer thing. I don't wear Nikes, I wear Asics and the only thing i can think of to place my Nike Censor is in the top of my shoe within the laces. I have lost that thing quite a few times and had to buy another :-(

yes, the Nike+ syncs through iTunes, and automatically uploads data to your account at http://nikeplus.nike.com/nikeplus/
There you can see all your runs, and set goals and even create challenges with other Nike+ users

Yeah, the challenge is pretty cool. Me and a friend challenged each other to see who could run the most miles in a month. The looser had to buy the winner a beer for every 10 miles that was run. It's a great way to stay motivated...plus you get shitfaced at the end of the month

I also like how you can map out your runs and see if anyone else around you has mapped out their runs. Its pretty cool, but I don't really keep up with it anymore b/c I can't stand any of nike shoes and went back to asics.

you can buy a sensor pouch for the sensor so you dont lose it!

anyone who has nike+ and an account online should sign up for the ACC challenge! it runs for a month and has been going on for about a week. search ACC under challenges and it'll show up. if it doesnt shoot me a pm with your email and i'll send you an invite.

the tar heels are kicking our ass right now so we need more runners!

Ha ha wow I ran a 5K last night the fastest I have ever run: it was like between 19 and 20 min... I can't remember... But this was also done on a treadmill cause it was kinda cold out and I'll run out when its super cold.. I just don't feel like it after working 8 to 9 hours When I was in CO, it rarely got above 30 and I just sucked it up and ran. But there's a huge difference in running there and here.

As weird as it sounds, but the change in altitude doesn't affect me, but the change in humidity does and I feel like with our humid climate, I am competing with the air for O2 :-( Just feels heavier in NC. I feel lighter in CO

finished!! i did the half marathon in just under 3 hours (which is pretty good for me) and besides a sore hip, i'm feeling pretty good and i must say, i think i look pretty good for having just run 13.2 miles!

*the half marathon was a bachelorette thing for a friend of mine who wore a veil and tutu during the race, the rest of us (12) wore matching tshirts and arm warmers with our names on the back-- thats why im wearing non-traditional running clothes

it wasnt nearly as grueling as i expected. i wasn't even uncomfortable until mile 11.. when my fingers were swollen like hotdogs, my hips hurt and i had a serious cramp

then by mile 12.5 it was over and i could function again!

good luck to you, which race are you doing?

I've taken a multiple-year hiatus from running, but have been pretty steady for the last couple of months. Assuming that keeps up, I'm playing with doing the Rock n Roll Half in VA Beach in Sept. I'd rather push that back to something in October because of the temperature though.

My fiance' and I ran the R&R in VB last August, it was our first Half and we finished in 1:58. Be sure to train for the conditions it was 85+ degrees and 80%+ humidity at 7:30 in the morning. It was a fun race, highly recommend the R&R's for a first race to help you stay light hearted about it all.

I'm doing the VA Beach Rock n Roll half this year for the third year in a row. Lots of fun!

This Spring I'm running the George Washington Parkway Classic 10-mile and I'm looking to get transferred into the Cherry Blossom 10-mile.

The National Half Marathon is at the end of March, but I still haven't decided if I want to do it or not. You have to qualify for it, and even though my times qualify, they barely do, and I don't want to finish last.

I think 2010 will be the year I'm ready to go the full marathon distance.

I've got a pretty annoying problem with patellar tendonitis.

I'm curious to learn what you guys do ( besides completely staying off the activity for a while) as far as strength training.

Do stretches really prevent or minimize the pain?

my patellar was killing me a week before the race and hurt afterward, i made it though but if i had more time, i was told that what i should do is use the machine at the gym where you lie on your back and lift the weight with your feet (i dont know the name of it)

doing sets with your feet outward like \ / then inward like / \ and that is supposed to help strengthen that tendon

im planning on doing more races so i will integrate that into my routine to avoid future injuries and discomfort

for pateller tendonitus, ice and ibuprophin are your best friends. Start taking ibuprophin regularly, like 2 in the morning or something. Ibuprophin is an anti-inflamitory, which will help with the swelling. Then after each run, be sure to ice both knees for ~15 minutes.

Stretching is good for after your run - not so much for your tendonitus, but just in general. It has been showing that stretching before a run is not really beneficial, and just starting out slow will do just fine. Stretching after a run will help with next-day soreness.

Strength training is completely up to what your goals are. Here is my general runner strength training advice from the marathon thread. The advice would vary depending, again, what your goals are. If you are just taking some time off while your tendonitus settles down, a good circuit workout would still be good, and maybe you could get on the eliptical machines

Quote :
"you don't necessarily have to do anything else, except run. But if you want, a relatively light weight-lifting routine is OK. The one thing you don't want to do is bulk-up, so anything you do in the weight room, make it low weight and high reps. Do a lot of body-weight-only excercises, like pushups, situps/crunches, back extensions, leg extensions, dips, step-ups, etc. Try a circuit-style workout, where you pick, for example, 10 low-impact exercises, do each one for 60, 90, or 120 seconds with 30 seconds rest in between, and do the whole circuit 2 or 3 times. If you're at or near NCSU campus, the workout area on the Intramural Field is good for circuits.

Also, don't work too much on your legs. Doing leg workouts isn't important for distance runners - that's what running is for. You can do all the step-ups (one-legged step up onto a bench, then pull your bottom knee up to your stomach) and split-legged squats (one foot in front, one in back, lower your back knee to the ground and back up. Hold dumbells for more weight) that you want. And some low-weight/high-rep hamstring curls and quad extensioins, but take it easy on the leg machines and don't live on the squat machine or try to get your legs looking like a body builder or sprinter.

Actually - calf exercises are important if you're not used to doing hills. Do calf raises on a machine, or just standing on curb (again, holding dumbells if you need more weight). Strong calf muscles will help prevent shin splints and will healp your hill climing."

The problem seemed like it began when I started running on an incline(7-8%) on treadmill. It could be a balance issue because my right knee is PERFECTLY fine. I think, as I am running uphill, I'm using my dominant leg (right) to push my self up the hill and causing the imbalance? What do you think?

Did some stretching and excercises recommended here:
http://www.med.umich.edu/1libr/sma/sma_jumpersk_rex.htm

Obviously, won't be able to know the difference after one session, but I'm gonna try to do them twice/week.

A knee band seemed to help tremendously when I was running Monday for 30 min.

^ you should try it!!

it wasn't nearly as painful as i expected, i was hardly sore afterward (ive been more sore from jumping jacks and lunges than the half marathon)

you must have a buddy though! i would not have made it through with the time i did (which is nothing to brag about) without a friend by my side encouraging each other!

also i had never run more an 5 or 6 miles before the race, my training program consisted more of a balance and stability routine and training in different heart rate zones but there are tons of programs you can find out there online
