Chop -- buy the POM brand pomegranate juice. It is the only stuff I've found that is truly 100% pomegranate juice. If you look on other juices you'll see other additives but the POM stuff is pure pomegranate. It is quite tangy.

My mom had a pomegranate tree in our back yard growing up. It would produce about 2 or 3 good pomegranates every other year or so.

Also - that new Minute Maid Pomegranate/Blueberry juice is delicious. Not a big fan of the sugar free and low calorie versions but the regular kind is glorious.

I eat the arils and the seeds inside them -- they taste wonderful.

If they 'bleed' while you cut into them it means they should be extra juicy. It might also mean that you're cutting into them too much -- just score down the sides a bit to pull the fruit open.

Yes, you chew and eat the seeds as well.

It would be a great shame and a disservice if you chewed them and spit them out, as a lot of people do.

Pomegranates are one of the healthiest foods on the planet... don't waste them.

ok i just finished up my pomegranate. i put the pods in the fridge, and that made them better to me. the seeds weren't a problem.

it sucks that they have so much damn sugar in them though... won't be able to enjoy any more of these things.

I agree that the arils taste better if the fruit has been refrigerated.

What's the deal with the sugar? Will these things give me diabeetus?

What, you didn't know that there was sugar in FRUIT???

There is lots of sugar in most fruits, however, it is only old-fashioned/stupid/incompetent doctors who tell diabetics/potential diabetics to stay away from fruit because fruit has sugar. Just like some fucking morons/doctors tell heart patients to stay away from nuts, olives, and avocados because those foods are high in fat Never mind the fact that those foods might actually clean your arteries and rid you of heart troubles. And that having fruits (not fruit juices) can actually regulate blood sugar and are good for pretty much anybody.

Even though fruits are high in sugar, the vast majority of them have a low glycemic index (GI). GI is what you should be looking at when deciding if something will give you or worsen your diabetes. Bread and commercial processed cereals are way worse for you than any fruit.

Eat your poms (and other fruit) with pride.

P.S. Check out the high levels of fiber on that link. And protein and fat as well (from the seeds).

i've started to use the arils on salads, in place of bacon bits

gives the crunch factor, quite a bit more healthy, and quite delicious

makes even a bland salad pop

OMG is it pomegranate season again??!!!???

I have a hard time deciding which season is my favorite. Summer - berries on sale! Fall - squash on sale! Late fall - POMS!!!

I like putting the seeds in a tupperware and bringing them to work to eat with a spoon for a snack.

For some strange reason, the kroger in garner has poms by the butcher section - right there by ground beef.

i went to HT tonight and bought 2 of the biggest poms i've ever seen. i can't palm them (like pick one up with one hand). you could probably throw one at someone's head and kill them.

and they were soooooooooo good for dessert.

Thanks -- I figured if anyone would comment on this it would be you.

While I know fruits have sugar, the connotation I read was that these were just bursting at the seams with it.

^ that is true if you eat the entire pomegranate in one sitting. however, you can just eat a few spoonfuls (or even half a cup) of the arils and you'll be right on par with the fruits you listed.

no, but i wouldn't eat a bowl of ice cream either, which has less sugar than a pomegranate has.

eh. You really need to view it on a better comparative basis:

This is based on grams of sugar / 100g of fruit for some popular fruits:

Fig - 16
Grapes - 16
Pomegranate -14
Cherries - 13
Apple - 11
Pears - 11
Pineapple - 10
Cantaloupe - 9

A "large" apple is listed at just over 200g. Comparing eating 200g of apple to 200g of pomegranate is the difference between ~22g and 28g of naturally occurring sugar.

To add to that, when dealing with daily healthy limits of grams of sugar, the number is almost always explicitly meaning added sugar. The sugar in these fruits is really nothing to be alarmed about.

Just got 3 ENORMOUS poms from the grocery store!!!!

like se7entythree said, I can't even palm these poms

all this discussion of sugar is ridiculous. Smath I can't believe you would even compare a pom to a bowl of ice cream. unless you are just trolling as usual Either way I will tolerate no more insults to the honor of the pomegranate, the most delicious of fruits. PROCEED WITH CAUTION!!

it's fun sometimes to get interweb people riled up, and i've been guilty of it from time to time, but I don't "usually" do it... (and yes, i have in this thread, but all in good fun)

however, some folks do need to watch their sugar, myself included. not because of diabeetus or anything, but as part of a program I'm on to watch my weight. I'm aware that pomegranates are "good for you" but they do have a lot of sugar. Granted, it's natural sugar and not the refined stuff, but it is something i always look at. some fruits, such as bananas, have way too much sugar for me.

I'd love to use pomegranates as a topping for ice cream... I just can't.

CalledToArms beat me to it.

Yes, you need to see sugar/100 grams of the fruit.

And here is one that he missed:

Banana: 12 g/100 g, which is pretty close to that of poms, and bananas have a higher glycemic load than poms! So, bananas will increase blood sugar levels more than poms would.

And anyway, if you eat them after a meal, it won't make a difference to your blood sugar.

Is this part of your riling us up? Because if you are eating ice cream....

WTH are you talking about??? Just chew the hell out of them and eat it all, without spitting out anything. Are you that much of a softie that you can't handle a tiny amount of tiny mildly hard/gritty tasteless seeds???
