This year's road trip:

based around a wedding in des moines.
We considered raleigh --> des moines--> san antonio --> s padre island --> home, in a week and a half

Then des moines --> follow the great lakes --> DC --> home
Then Des moines --> shenandoah --> drive the entire skyline drive/BR pkwy --> home

Now it's des moines --> denver area NP/NFs --> home

We leave 4/15; return no later than 4/25

or...we don't leave until 4/25. Z figured out a way to get two more days there without having to take time off. I'm driving home from denver on my own

i've been driving home from Denver:

I left DIA @ 540 MDT on 4/24, and made it to ~russell, KS last night. I totally slept in the back of the car. I'll just say that I'm glad I'm young, not arthritic, and flexible

I drove for 13 hrs today...I would have killed someone in that time if I'd spent 13hrs as a passenger.

I ended up hitting st louis during rush hour. This is noteworthy because until today, Raleigh was the biggest city I've ever driven in/around.

I had allowed myself to get home by ~noon on Thursday. I'll be home by tomorrow night (I miss my kitty)

Hrmm.

Me and the fiance are bouncing ideas around. We're thinking about driving down the Ohio and Lower Mississippi (she's from near Pittsburgh), giving about 8-9 days. Is that too busy?

From Pittsburg to New Orleans and back? Thats ~ 2500 miles. Around 315 miles a day... thats a lot of driving, but if you aren't destination hopping but just enjoying the drive, that seems ok.

Driving from Phoenix to raleigh or charleston end of june/beginning of july. driving pretty hardcore but wouldnt mind a few short stops to break up the day. Probably coming along I20 instead of I40 so we can stop in cross plains TX and see the place Robert E. Howard lived. Any other suggestions for stops?

I still have ~3hrs to drive tomorrow.
I only need these plates to FINALLY get all 50 on a trip (I'll count one excursion into RMNP as part of this trip; it's not really fair to get to use 4-6months to "get" these plates)

HI
VT
NH
DE
UT (I actually dreamed about this plate last night In my dream, it was somehow an NC App Trail specialized plate, but with the Utah background design. Through this, I knew they were heading out to hike the Continental Divide trail, but called it the Pacific Coast Trail )
RI

I saw SD and ND together today. I also got some good ones before I even left NC, like OR, WA, MT.

Best trip I've done recently was Raleigh -> Indianapolis -> Milwaukee -> Chicago. Overall a hell of a time. I feel like Chicago is my kind of town, in that it's huge but not so anti-social that people think you're a retard/pervert for opening doors for people.

My road trip last summer. Best part: Glacier NP. Really wish I had spent more time there.

Officially over 1000 counties visited!

Went to visit my family, and on the return, I decided to visit Monument Valley and the surrounding desert. Pictures to come.

Actually, a long while ago I registered for this website:

http://mob-rule.com/counties/

They break down every state into its counties, parishes, and boroughs and overlay with US Highways and Interstates. I also have done some highlighting on my extensive state highway map collection. In the East, I'm starting to get to the point where I say: 'Should I take this road to get this county?'

It's ok. I have one of those job things I have to take care of 5 days a week and wouldn't have really gone.

I've driven coast to coast twice--it's something that I think everyone absolutely ought to do at least once.

Now I want to do it on a motorcycle and in a light airplane.

^ Absolutely agree. It opens your eyes to see how big/vast/different this country is, and yet we have the ability to get from one side to the other in just over a few days.

I've done the I-40 route, I want to do a Seattle/Boston and Miami/LA route next. Also a few North/South routes (entire length of US-1, US-101, etc).
