This is illegal, you cannot provide your own used container for refilling soda. You can do it at your house but just buy a nalgene bottle.

it's illegal to buy a 3 liter bottle of soda and fill your own 20 oz bottle at home?

Maybe we're talking about La Nina?

According to some forecasters, this year's La Nina will force much of our needed rain to the north of us, meaning more dry conditions for the next three months, and, theoretically, making the following summer even worse then last summer.
http://www.ens-newswire.com/ens/dec2007/2007-12-20-094.asp

Of course, they also predicted a worse then average hurricane season in 2006 and 2007, so this may end up being some more sensationalist media BS.

^the way weather works:

They come up with a study that comes out 3 months after whatever happened is already old history. The study blames El Niño or La Niña, whichever is the buzzword at the time (I'm surprised they haven't blamed "bluetooth" yet). Then they use their historical findings to make broad, sweeping, generalizations about the upcoming months.

what is the deal with water now? what is the difference between being on city water and being on a well outside the city...anything? is the drought really that bad? my parents freak out everytime we turn on the water or flush the toilet and its starting to get annoying. i like water but i don't like peeing on other peoples pee.

When you are on city water you know when you are going to run out.

Yes, it is pretty bad.

And they don't like people wasting water. I suppose there is a compromise in there somewhere... you get to flush the toilet and leave the sink running while you brush your teeth and they get to send you the bill for drilling a new well.

well i've never left the sink on while brushing teeth. that is clearly wasteful. but peeing on other peoples pee? my mom even got me a bucket to put in my shower to fill up while the water is warming up so we can use THAT water to flush the toilet. i just feel like she's being a little extreme. especially because i doubt anyone else in our neighborhood is taking the same precautions. i take shorter showers and cut back on laundry and stuff but...the whole bucket in the shower thing and peeing on pee just seems extreme. oh and one side of the sink in our kitchen is filled up with dirty water to rinse dishes in before they go in the dishwasher so we don't run the faucet. i mean...i dunno...a little extreme is what i think.

^^ yes get this. but it is gross when you let it mellow for a long time and the whole bathroom smells like urine. i'm good with two-three pees and then a flush.

If you've ever wanted a basement, build it now!

Water tables are harder to find now. It's sad that we've had this much drought.

Heard there's a man in Rolesville that might have some surplus water he might sell if someone could pump it to a treatment station It's really impractical to treat water from a place with no infrastructure though.

The Independent Weekly has a nice "doom-and-gloom" article about the drought in Durham, although it's still an interesting read.

http://www.indyweek.com/gyrobase/Content?oid=oid%3A165531

TLDR:

- Durham had 39 days of water left, but now they're siphoning water from another source, so they have roughly 70 days of water now.
- The City of Durham appears to be sweeping the issue to the side. They appear to be taking no action against the drought.
- The article criticizes Easely for not doing enough to conserve water, although they do admit he's doing more then most state governors, unlike Georgia.

I really didn't care too much about the drought... but if you see some local lake levels it is pretty damn bad.

But I still don't really care that much

OMG GLOBAL WARMING DROUGHT!

The reason for the lack of water is probably the lack of hurricanes which typically bring millions of gallons of water to the east coast.

i'm no expert, as evidenced by the following two ideas...

but is dredging falls lake, or any other low water supply, while it is low (thereby increasing the capacity) a viable option? i've read that new reservoirs are being planned, certainly dredging is a cheaper, quicker option. obviously, i may be misinformed.

also, what prevents old quarries from being used as reservoirs? i would imagine acids or mineral deposits exist there, but all water needs treatment in some form or fashion, right? they could hold enormous amounts of water... i'm not even sure how many old quarries are around here, but just one could supply quite a few customers.

these aren't ground breaking ideas, and i'm sure they've been thought of long ago, but there's got to be reasons why they aren't reasonable and realistic, i just can't think of why.

there is plenty of capacity in falls lake. it could rain for a long time, and the lake would not fill all the way up, so right now dredging would only serve to muck it up.

the problem isn't the storage capacity. there isn't enough water to fill it up all the way.

^^sure, but that's not going to be the problem forever. it won't solve the problem we're having right now, but would it not help prevent this problem from happening again? it obviously would take a surplus of rain to fill up falls lake, and that won't happen this week, this month or probably this year, but eventually it will fill back up. when it does fill back up, why not have more capacity so that when another drought hits, it won't be nearly the problem it is right now.

I just posted that to show that quarry water is drinkable.

And I think it's going to be a loooong time before we have enough rain to fill up the lakes to the point that we can start taking out extra water to store in quarries or wherever.

well it might help once we have a surplus of water again, but it costs $$$ to do that type of thing. Also, you can pull sediment out of the lake via dredging, but after a while it will fill back up with sediment just as before.

one of the raleigh city councilmen asked about making the lake deeper, especially the north end that is basically dry now since they could just use land based equipment quite easily. The army coor of engineers said it would be something like atleast 10 years before any digging could start because of all the impact studies and shit that would have to be done first

As for quarries . . . there aren't that may around here, but but some of the few that are there are being used or set up (the one in Durham, there is also a small one in Fuquay and the town has bought the rights to the larger one right next door that will close in about 40 years). For a quarry to be feasible, you need an easy way to pump the water from the quarry to the treatment facility . . . otherwise you gotta lay a lotta pipe or build a new treatment plant.
