This new Destroyer album is pretty great. 'Dark Leaves for a Thread' is the song of the year so far.

Okay, the Volta is down, but I found another link out there, so PM me if you need it.

If anyone could put up a good cop of the Hot Chip, I would appreciate it. That link is dead now too, unfortunatley.

Jack Johnson - "Sleep through the static" on February 5th
Millencolin - "Machine 15" on April 7th
Roger Clyne and the Peacemakers - new album sometime this year

more to come later

The Steeldrivers - The Steeldrivers [2008]
Quote :
"
The Steel Drivers hail from Nashville, TN and concoct a sound that combines elements of tradition with contemporary flourishes. One might call the group's self-titled debut neo-acoustic. It's a sound that relies on mandolins, fiddles, and guitars, one that skirts bluegrass without being constricted by it. Banjoist Richard Bailey, bassist-vocalist Mike Fleming, mandolinist-vocalist Mike Henderson, fiddler-vocalist Tammy Rogers, and guitarist-lead vocalist Chris Stapleton deliver 11 full-bodied tracks on The Steel Drivers, highlighted by Stapleton's scratchy, Tom Waits meets bluegrass vocals. The fact that Stapleton's vocals serve as the band's calling card will make it easy for the the Steel Drivers to stand out among other neo-acoustic bands. But while the band's "big sound" -- Stapleton's hoarse vocals, the group harmony, and bright production -- really calls attention to itself one track at a time, it can be a bit bombastic song after song. The first three songs, "Blue Side of the Mountain," "Drinkin' Dark Whiskey," and "Midnight Train to Memphis" are like a one-two-three punch of sonic energy. "Midnight Tears" and "If You Can't Be Good, Be Gone" stick closer to bluegrass and offer a slight pause after the first three. But even here, the Steel Drivers' vocal attack along with the crisp production seldom allows the music a chance to breathe. The ballad-paced "Sticks That Made Thunder" is an exception to the rule, a track that winningly shows off the band's softer side. The Steel Drivers are a talented lot, and the sonic blast of many of these songs presented individually will probably take radio listeners by surprise. Taken as a whole, however, The Steel Drivers are stuck in overdrive.

the young republic - 12 tales from winter city
Quote :
"
SONG BY TOAD's review of "12 Tales From Winter City"
"... There’s some pastoral indie-pop, full-on rock ‘n’ roll, a little bit of rag time and some pure country in amongst the various styles in this record. All eight of the band studied music, and this interest in any and all styles shows through in the music they themselves produce, which is unrestrained by any one category. Nonetheless it all holds very well together. They have put a lot of work into their orchestration, making sure that all eight instruments aren’t fighting one another for attention, with the lovely She’s Not Waiting Here This Time testament to this hard work. It starts out all sparse and lovely, with no more than a little dash of piano and guitar underpinned with a little brush work on the drums. Half way through however, a drum roll heralds the arrival of a choir of angels and swelling cinematic orchestration. It’s superb, and this kind of surprising and unselfconscious genre-hopping is what is best about this album

THE DAILY GROWL's review of "12 Tales From Winter City"
"The Young Republic are obviously American, with a bit of a country influence... I know they’re Dylan nuts, and their Bob covers set at End of the Road Festival is still one of my festival, if not general musical highlights of the year. They’ve also got a big love for The Beatles, so that’s maybe where the strong pop sensibility comes from. In other places (like on She Comes and Goes) where the strings really get going there’s a reminiscence of Arcade Fire. So plenty to enjoy all round then.

Blood On The Wall - Liferz [Social Registry 2008]

Quote :
"
Liferz finds the band expanding their sound and honing their aesthetic while staying true to their roots. Approaching the new material in the studio with the same earnest energy that characterizes their live shows, Blood On The Wall have crafted their best record to date. The raw energy is still there - tracks like album opener Hibernation and the relentlessly catchy "Rize" nearly bubble over with the band's patent explosiveness. But Blood On The Wall are no one-trick pony, and Liferz is most definitely a diverse outing. The band balances their frenetic bursts with tempered songs like the slow-churning Lightning Song.

Having gone from hometown heroes to national fan favorites and critical darlings, the band has earned its reputation as top of the rock heap. Along the way they've been able to translate their notoriously wild live show effectively to the studio, putting out raucously fun records. Liferz is a portrait of a band at the top of their game - somehow they have managed to get even more "awesomer".

new Jack Johnson--sleep through the static
hxxp://www.mediafire.com/?2kdsq7mm1mw

haha, I guess I'm the only one that like the Hot Chip record.

Vampire Weekend received 4 stars in Spin and an 8.8 on pitchfork... that should bode well for the band. I really hope the Cradle books them.

You might hear some of it on KNC, XDU, or XYC, but most of us hear about it though friends, through music blogs, or, I dunno, just however the fuck anybody hears about anything that isn't on TV or radio.

i'm getting tired of rap...most white girls dont like it and the ones that do typically go for black dudes...plus it just has that negative stigma and they are always talking about drugs and hos...plus no good shit comes out on a regular basis anymore...aint had a decent year since 05...plus the shit that gets big now is stupid shit like soldier boy

still can't believe justin's album (bon iver) blew up so much. good for him

regarding vampire weekend.. i think "a-punk" is a great song. the rest of the album i couldn't really give a shit about one way or another. people sure are buying into the hype though.
