I feel like now is a good time to confess that I have been involved in a couple uneven scuffles.

They weren't exactly beatdowns so much as putting the insulting assholes in their place.

And everybody involved was drunk on both occasions.

Looking back, I am ashamed and pretty embarassed because I'm not much of a fighter. I just like to imagine I am.

You folks that seem surprised that shit like this would happen on Franklin Street (and nearby streets) need to start reading the local news more.

Oh and btw the area across from University Baptist with I heart NY pizza is where the gangsters from Durham usually seem to hang out during Halloween (and most likely other times too). The last time I went all the girls we were with got felt up like crazy, but nobody said anything because we didn't wanna get cut.

quick question to anyone that knows about concussions. i was knocked out for like 10 minutes, is this going to affect me in the future. ive looked at shit online but personal stories make it easier to know what to expect (it was my 2nd one btw)

As long as you were just concussed (no cracked skull, etc), it shouldn't have any long term impact.

The only thing that has been "long term" is amnesia. I lost the events several days prior to being knocked out with my second concussion and never regained them. But as far as long lasting difficulties due to multiple concussions. . .I haven't had any and I wouldn't worry until you've had quite a few blows to the head.

it really depends...if your brain bounced around in your skull, that can be serious...I was in a car accident a few years ago, and it permanently fucked up my memory and vocabulary

the only way to really ascertain the damage is to get an MRI...I hope it isn't serious...also, I know that even if the brain is damaged by a concussion, it can heal itself by finding new pathways to replace the ones that have been destroyed

IMHO, everyone spouting off about a gun isn't thinking through the fact that with 15:1 odds, handgun retention wouldn't be the easiest thing. Couple that with the fact that probably one of these guys had a gun too, and you're up shit creek either way, unless everyone hanging out with you is armed too and capable of hitting just the guys attacking you. (Yes, his friends would legally be allowed to shoot the attackers since they were interviening to prevent death or grave bodily injury.)

Either way, Chapel Hill prohibits concealed carry on government property and they consider streets and sidewalks public property. Bullshit if you ask me, but knowing CH, they'd arrest you first.

yeah actually.....we got the police report and they stated no injuries
the cops didnt want to report it and never cared to address the problem

my hospital bill has "concussion - with loss of consciousness" and other minor injuries on it

secondly when i saw the pic of the 17 year old kid i got really freaked out, he looked eerily familiar

im not sayin that kid was involved, i cant remember. but the dudes that did it all looked and dressed the same exact way that kid did

my mom called me the day it happened and we talked about how horrible it was and how it could have easily been me. the kids that did it were all going for my wallet before my buddy punched one of them and they ran.

i only read the first page. but could your "group" not do anything about this?

really sorry this happened man. I had something similar happen to me on halloween one year, and after the guys ran with my shiti told the cops to go get them and instead they roughed me up because I was drunk

Yeah, I'd say that is, at least in part, post-traumatic stress disorder. Not claiming to be some fucking expert on it or anything but I've had stuff happen to me too that freaked me out quite severely (though not as severe in scale as what you experienced). I've seen sketchy things or sketchy people that reminded me of that situation I was in and I almost immediately went into a bad state of anxiety, sometimes almost having a panic attack of sorts. If any of this sounds remotely familiar you should take action on the issue.

Seek a counselor to help you with it (I didn't, haven't, and I regret having not done it since I periodically get more debilitating freakout sessions) and just try to avoid putting yourself in a situation like that in the future. Yeah I'm basically saying don't go to areas where you remember sketchy assholes being when you've gone out to bars. For a while it might be the only thing that keeps the event from being a big issue in your life.

As far as the cops not being helpful, that really and truly sucks. They'd definitely prosecute you or one of the kids if you had punched one of them in the face, but (what in my opinion is) a far more serious offense of a group of over a dozen people attacking one person in what easily could've ended as a murder ends up getting mostly ignored and regarded as more of a public disturbance rather than anything else. Sorry to hear that this event isn't getting any real closure. :/

Concealed carry is prohibited on streets that border campuses, including Franklin St, Hillsborough St and Western Blvd. You would have certainly been hassled by the cops if you'd had a pistol.

Chapel Hill police are worse than useless. Maybe this latest murder will put some pressure on them, but I doubt it. Of course, people think Chapel Hill/Carrboro is this happy little town full of yuppies, which couldn't be farther from the truth. It's durham, part II.

If its still possible, report the police officer, or dept in general if you dont kno who it was. Go get your hosptial records saying you had a concussion etc, any pictures of your injuries, and anyone who witnessed this and go down to the local police dept. Ask to make a serious complaint. I would try to demand to speak with someone at the sergeant level or from IA (internal investigations). Show them all this, if they dont act surprised or if they act like they dont care/nothing happens, brush you off or refuse to hear you, report the entire department (with witnesses) to the SBI (state bureau of investigation) and/or FBI for corruption and abuse. I'm no expert on this, but I know making a truthful complaint is not illegal and very few bad things can come your way from just complaining. The worse think you can do is let bad cops go by unnoticed. They'll just get worse, abuse more people, and give all the rest of the really good officers a horrible name.

thats the problem i have right now

and now someone is dead because of thugs much like the ones that got to me

if the police took care of all these mother fuckers from durham causing problems on franklin st., you never know, this murder might not have taken place

yes, but you would be a lot less hurt, b/c after the first guy went down, the others would scurry and most likely he would rat the others out.

Chapel Hill is like Disney World for Durham thugs. The cops are useless and never solve crimes, they just hand out tickets.

i just sent info to eyewitness news investigates and basically told them what happened and talked about the incompetence of the chapel hill police dept, and that if they acted when things like this happened, we might not be grieving the loss of another individual. hopefully i hear back.

you should definitely seek action, but i'd keep quiet if you are talking bad about the police. i've seen it too many times. doesn't mean anything bad will happen, but it sure makes it more likely that it will.

be careful who you piss off, once it comes down to your word against theirs its one hell of an uphill battle

The sad part is, if JayMCnasty was killed, then something would have been done.

But he's still walking around, so these guys are going to as well.

I would file a complaint to the department head, or someone at the department. Especially because you were taken away in an ambulance after being unconcious, and they said there were no injuries. Plus, they had people who know the attackers, and let them leave.
