Our guys finally played pretty well for most of the game. There was still a little bit of sucktitude at parts toward the end, but they played too well to lose this game.

GG Gavin Grant. He had 15 points, was perfect from the free throw line tonight, and at one point in the second half was perfect from the field.

we played badly and still won. terrible shooting, terrible turnovers. Luckily we finally used our size advantage to control the boards.

i disagree that we played badly.

i think that we played the best offensive game yet, given a quality opponent. but for the LOVE OF GOD

NO MORE JAVI GONZALEZ. HE IS HORRENDOUS.

and sidney gets a C- for coaching. there's no reason we shouldn't have had twice as many points in the paint. he also seems to not have a grasp on rotation. every game is like, Who's in there now??? at this point, you've got to realize that our best lineup is Degand, Grant, McCauley, Hickson, Fells

with Horner coming off as 6th man.

i'm not sold on Costner being reliable yet.

Yeah Javi can't be in there if he won't even take an open shot. He was wide open a couple times and just passed it off. Braxton Albritton style.

Ah, lowered standards. Playing the best offense we had all year still means we sucked. Good offenses don't turn the ball over.

hell yes I bet Davidson +2 and we won by a digit. A win/win/win all around. That win should do wonders for our confidence, especially Costner.

we did better on the defensive boards this game and had 32 defensive boards, but only 8 offensive boards. gotta give the bigs some love. costner showed up early at times, but it seemed like he fell off toward the end.

Hickson - 10 points, 7 rebs, 1 blk, 2 assists
McCauley - 11 points, 7 rebs, 2 assists
Costner - 13 points ,6 rebs, 1 assist

also I should mention that Horner had a quiet 7 points, 2 rebs, and 1 assist, and was a perfect 3/3 from the FT line. good solid production from a quality sophmore bench player.

Force someone else to ebat you , it's that simple, Curry had, what, 29 points. no way that should happen, and yea, he hit some incredibly tough shots, but deny him the ball, run the box, whatever it takes. I mean Fells was chasing after him the entire game and he still had 29, so it's more coaching than player's effort.

I wish we had gotten Curry. If we had a 3 pt. threat that dangerous, I could just imagine how dominant our front line would be. They wouldn't have to fight off double and triple teams b/c the other team can just pack it down low due to us not having consistent outside shooting.

Dear Stephen Curry,

Please transfer to NC State. Sure you may have to sit for a year due to transfer rules, but think about it. You'll get to play in the RBC Center, one of the 10 largest arenas in college basketball. You would get to train in the Dail Basketball Center, one of the nicest basketball facilities in the nation. Also you would actually have a real chance at winning a national championship and becoming an ACC legend.

Signed,
Brass Monkey

P.S. You would probably have not just better looking basketball groupies at State, but more of them. Just something to think about.

Not really.

We did play terrible for that large drought toward the end of the game, but this was by far the best offensive team to date. Again, barring that drought, nearly everyone hustled and played hard throughout. Costner looked much more like the player we knew last season, and McCauley continues to impress with how he almost always finds a way to get the ball in the basket in the post. And when McCauley misses you won't find anyone hustling harder to get the rebound and go for some second chance pts. Grant, McCauley, Hickson, and Costner all scored in double digits, with Fells and Horner contributing 5 and 7 respectively.

Javi is incredibly frustrating to watch and I don't see why he stays in for so long. He'd be fine for giving Degand a break from time to time but he really shouldn't be seeing the minutes he does when we have Degand and now Johnson available for the pg rotation.

It's about damn time we started rebounding like we should given our size advantage on nearly every team we play.

Umm we held him to 6 points the last 17 minutes there buddy. Did you watch this game or just look at the boxscore? Not to mention the kid is averaging 24 points a game, 29 points isn't that much of a stretch. Thanks for playing though.

I dunno about him being there for our players man. I've got a picture of his notebook about 15 minutes in. Unfortunately he hadn't wrote down shit about any of our players and I didn't see him add anything after that picture. He thinks Curry is "pretty good" though.

idk when he wrote it . . . but when I looked later in the game he had NC State under Davidson and had notes on Hickson, Grant, and Costner . . . couldn't read what he wrote about them.

but damn if we didn't have a surprisingly good crowd tonight, it really got loud in there when we made the little runs and it was pretty sweet when damn near everybody was jumping and yelling on that last play of the game, the place was rockin

Got back from the game a while ago, here's my take:

It was good to see McCauley and Costner step up finally. Grant was solid again, perfect from the line too. Fells was quiet on offense except for the dunk and a big 3, and he managed to at least slow down Curry in the second half. Horner put in good quality minutes, not to mention 7 points. Hickson was streaky, but he had his moments as usual got his share of big baskets and rebounds.

Things that killed us:

1) Outside shooting - We don't have any. The limiting factor on State's post-play is the fact that, aside from Costner, the Pack doesn't have legitmate 3-point threats. Davidson doubled down on the post all night. 4-14 from beyond the arc just doesn't draw the defense very well.

2) Poor guard play - The point guard position is still a mess. Degand is a decent ball handler, but he's not impressive off the dribble on offense or defense. His outside shot is non-existent as well. Gonzalez is quick, which can force turnovers, but he's gun shy when it comes to shooting. He also turned the ball over just as much as Degand, which was far too often. The Pack offense hit major droughts throughout the game. Sidney was calling a lot of plays from the bench, a process which cost State several seconds on the shot clock far too often.

3) Fastbreak points - The Pack was beaten down the court several times, even after we scored, for easy layups. That's just inexusable. Sidney better have those guys running laps in practice.

Things that helped State win:

1) Veterans stepping up - Good to see the McCauley of last year. Costner's dunk was fucking awesome. His and Fells' are ESPN Top 10 material.

2) Scoring balance - 4 guys in double figures, another signature of last season's team. The rotation in the lineup seemed a lot more fluid. McCauley, Horner, and Gonzalez played a lot together. Degand, Costner, and Hickson were on the first line. Grant and Fells were on the floor most of the game, in Fells' case it was to guard Curry.

3) Hustle - despite the fastbreak points, the Pack showed some urgency and toughness. State also rebounded much better tonight, even if it was against a smaller team.

4) Free throw shooting - mostly Grant, but 85% is damned impressive and a much needed improvement over early in the season.

Overall I was encouraged by the win, but the Pack has a long ways to go if it wants to contend in the ACC. The PG play has GOT to get better, or it'll be .500 season in the ACC with a high seed in the NCAA tourney.

Somebody said Degand can't shoot well he's made almost half of his threes and has a crazy good assist to turnover ratio. one bad turnover game doesn't make him a mess going up against jason richardson, does it? Its Javi that is not good at all. When does Johnson become eligible?

I don't understand why everybody is happy with this game. This was the same type of play we've seen most of the season. A step above the recent losses but we played like the old spice classic tonight and beat a decent team by 1 at home. I'm sick of hearing people try to sugarcoat this and act like davidson is a great team because they clearly aren't and then you hear sid on the radio talking about how we played great beat a great team and all is fine and dandy then we come out and have another michigan state against a real team.

We didn't score a fg in the last 7 minutes of each half. Nobody moves on offense. Thats called guarding yourselves. Terrible.
