as far as the cheese goes, i kinda view hummus as a vegan cheese. esp heated it reminds me a lot of melted cheese.
i take some soy protein sometimes (in smoothies and soy yogurt and stuff), but prob not as often as i should. also eat a lot of nuts, whole wheat, etc... 7/19/2008 1:47:40 PM |

^^haha, just for fun one day make a hummus pizza, or a hot hummus rollup, and then tell me it doesn't remind you of cheese
pepperjack tofurky also tastes like really great cheese. good for sandwiches. smoked tofurky is great too, but that tastes like turkey, not cheese. 7/20/2008 3:13:13 AM |

haha no i mean it may REMIND me of cheese but it isn't cheese. i guess i'll TRY the pepperjack but any cheesy wannabe type stuff i've tried just hasn't done it (and i'm not being picky, i've tried for real ) 7/20/2008 3:15:22 AM |

I really like the Galaxy brand jalapeno "cheese" slices. I'm not even a vegan, but they sounded tasty so I tried some. They actually melt, and while it's obviously not the same as a piece of genuine cheese, it's not far off from the Kraft singles type cheese. And I don't even usually like that crap, but somehow these got my stamp of approval. 7/20/2008 11:55:22 AM |

hey can vegetarians eat shrimp? 7/24/2008 12:19:29 PM |
alee All American 2178 Posts user info edit post |
Nope. No seafood. Technically, there is a term for someone who would otherwise eat a vegetarian diet except that they also eat seafood: pescetarian. 7/24/2008 12:21:25 PM |
Skwinkle burritotomyface 19447 Posts user info edit post |
Pescitarian is the term for people who eat seafood but no other meats.

How many people eat only chicken and shrimp? If they eat seafood and all poultry, then they can just say they don't eat red meat/pork. 7/24/2008 12:29:18 PM |

While I am truly glad when people decide to cut back on the animals that they eat, I think it's silly to come up with so many different names for diets. I've even heard someone use pollo-vegetarian, which is utterly absurd. 7/24/2008 12:39:54 PM |
Skwinkle burritotomyface 19447 Posts user info edit post |
I would prefer they say that instead of just calling themselves vegetarian and furthering the general confusion over what "vegetarians" really eat. 7/24/2008 1:05:03 PM |

But by having "vegetarian" still in the name, it leads people to think that vegetarians can eat just about everything. I'd rather them say that they just don't eat red meat/etc.
It just seems like they want some special title so that they can sound different without actually doing anything.
I'm scared for the day when they start trying to water down the term "vegan". Then I'll really be in trouble. 7/24/2008 2:09:29 PM |

Boba house in g-boro has some tasty vegan carrot cake. I had actually never had carrot cake (vegan or not) ever before theirs though- so I don't know what to compare it too really.
Anyhow, I am looking for a light sauce for pasta to use on nights when I don't want to do much. I've been using evoo plus a little basil/oregano (typically over angel hair, linguine, or spaghetti), but I'm bored with it.
Any other light sauces y'all like to use? 7/31/2008 5:16:55 PM |

what is a "light" sauce? u mean other than tomato paste? my friend makes this pretty good sauce with like asian vinagrette dressing, pine nuts, some green veggies, and garlic that is pretty good. 8/2/2008 4:29:43 PM |

^^ yea I am basically looking for a tomato-free alternative. I'm bored with tomato sauce (not like I use it much to begin with, but still). I might try that vinaigrette based one this week. 8/2/2008 6:30:27 PM |

I would still recommend maybe adding something to add a little more flavor, maybe like some of your own spices or something idk, it also might depend on the dressing you choose also of course. 8/2/2008 8:12:58 PM |

do they make soy chicken like they do soy burgers? 8/2/2008 8:19:37 PM |
alee All American 2178 Posts user info edit post |
Nooch is typically used as a substitute.
INGREDIENTS
* 1/3 cup pine nuts * 2/3 cup olive oil * 5 cloves garlic * 1/3 cup nutritional yeast * 1 bunch fresh basil leaves * salt and pepper to taste
DIRECTIONS
1. Place the pine nuts in a skillet over medium heat, and cook, stirring constantly, until lightly toasted. 2. Gradually mix the pine nuts, olive oil, garlic, nutritional yeast, and basil in a food processor, and process until smooth. Season with salt and pepper. 8/2/2008 11:27:10 PM |
