State's Hickson not on pre-draft camp list The NBA released the official participant list for the 2008 Pre-Draft camp today. As expected, UNC's Ty Lawson, Wayne Ellington and Danny Green were on it.
Unexpectedly, N.C. State's J.J. Hickson was not.
Coach Sidney Lowe said last week that Hickson would attend the camp, but would only get a physical. However, his name is not found under "Camp Players" or the separate list of "Skills, Strength & Agility, and Medical Testing."
Efforts to reach the NBA were not immediately successful; an N.C. State team spokesman said coaches were looking into whether Hickson was in Orlando, where the camp beings today.
Lowe also said last week that Hickson will work out individually with teams after the camp. He declined to say which teams 5/27/2008 11:29:37 AM |

Hickson will be top 15.
it seems that all the signs point to someone assuring him that he's their guy.
it'll probably be phoenix. and then his mind will explode when being able to play with a competent point guard. 5/28/2008 2:00:40 PM |

If Phoenix knows what they're doing, they wont take Hickson since he's not too different from Amare. However, by signing Hill, trading Marion for Shaq and letting D'Antoni go, they've proven they don't have a clue. 5/28/2008 2:07:21 PM |

So upon returning from vacation I was happy to see my June edition of The Wolfpacker magazine to be among the bundle of held mail delivered today. They have a section on Julius Mays and C.J. Williams and after reading it I feel really good about the two and what they'll provide for us over the next four to five years. Julius hopes to wear No. 24, a jersey number that is legendary in State's program. You don't put on No. 24 and wear it lightly, b/c there are a lot of great State players that have worn that number. Julius Hodge being the last great one to don the No. 24 and have it hanging in the rafters. Some of the other greats to wear No. 24 and have their jersey honored include Jon Richter, Tommy Burleson, and Tom Gugliotta. Terry Gannon also wore 24 during his time at State. C.J. wants to wear No. 21. 6/5/2008 6:00:25 PM |

UNC's Lawson charged with driving after drinking
CHAPEL HILL - North Carolina point guard Ty Lawson was arrested today and charged with driving after consuming alcohol, violating a local noise ordinance and driving with a suspended or revoked license. A front base operator at the Chapel Hill Police Department confirmed today the charges against Tywon Ronell Lawson, 20, but could not provide details. Lawson, a sophomore, averaged 12.7 points for the Tar Heels, who advanced to the Final Four last season. He is one of three UNC players who entered their names into the NBA draft, but he did not hire an agent, leaving open the possibility that he will return to school. He has until June 16 to pull his name out of the draft and has been working out for NBA teams to judge where he would be taken. Contacted early this morning, a team spokesman did not know of the arrest report and had no immediate comment. 6/6/2008 8:42:29 AM |

Hickson indicates he plans to stay in draft
NC State freshman forward J.J. Hickson entered his name into the NBA draft almost immediately after the Pack's season was over, and he indicated in an interview done with the Phoenix Suns' Web site that he is not planning to return to NC State.
"I would say that I'm definitely in the draft," Hickson told the Web site. "I came out just testing the waters, but since I'm hearing a lot of good things about my game I'm not going to pull my name out."
Hickson has not signed with an agent, but he is being advised by Andy Miller. ESPN's Andy Katz reported that Hickson would likely sign with Miller once he formally stays in the draft.
Hickson led NC State in scoring and rebounding during his rookie campaign. He averaged 14.8 points and 8.5 rebounds per game. The 6-foot-9, 242-pound Hickson was a McDonald's All-American and five-star recruit coming out of Wheeler High in Marietta, Ga.
Phoenix is one of four teams that Hickson has worked out with so far. Seattle, Cleveland and Sacramento have also taken a look at Hickson. He is also scheduled to work out for Denver and Philadelphia. Most analysts have Hickson as a mid-to-late first-round draft pick in mock drafts.
While I wish he would have come back, and truly thought he could have turned into a lottery pick had he stayed one more year, I wish him the best. It's always good to have players from our program get drafted and make it in the pros. 6/6/2008 8:32:14 PM |

We knew from the start he'd be here at most two years, so it's not really a surprise. I'd love to see him come back, but I wish him the best in the pros. Seems like he could actually be a good fit in Phoenix, but it'll depend on what kind of style they run with the new coaching staff.
Hopefully Costner and McCauley will regain some of the skill they showed two years ago--if they could, the two of them plus Tracy Smith could still give us a quality frontcourt. 6/6/2008 9:24:01 PM |

So with Hickson gone what do you think our lineup will look like? Sid indicated that we may use a two guard strategy and Fells would move to the 3. I would really like to see Marques Johnson focus on playing SG and play up to his potential. He has to have some game if he was able to get offers from Tennessee, Georgetown, Illinois, Indiana, Oklahoma, and Purdue.
PG - Degand, Javi SG - Ferguson, Johnson, Mays SF - Fells, Williams, Thomas, Harris PF - McCauley, Costner, Smith, Horner (face it we don't have a true center, so we'll play two PFs and rotate with these four, with Horner sometimes floating to the 3.) 6/8/2008 1:44:30 AM |

The 6-foot-4 Crawford started eight games as a freshman for the Hoosiers, whose roster has been depleted with transfers, dismissals and the departure of Eric Gordon for the NBA since former coach Kelvin Sampson stepped down this spring.
Sampson, new coach Tom Crean and other Indiana officials are scheduled to appear at an NCAA infractions committee hearing in Seattle on Friday.
The case against Sampson was detailed in a 96-page report sent to the university in May and made public last week. The NCAA accuses Sampson of providing false and misleading information to investigators about more than 100 impermissible calls and knowingly violating NCAA recruiting restrictions imposed because of a previous phone-call scandal at Oklahoma." |

Canes to stay at RBC until October 2024
The Carolina Hurricanes will continue playing home hockey games at the RBC Center until October 2024 under a extended lease agreement being announced Friday.
The five-year extension comes after nearly two years of negotiations between Gale Force Holdings, the Hurricanes parent company, and the Centennial Authority, the public agency that owns the RBC Center.
"It makes a big statement on our belief in the continued growth of our sport and the Hurricanes and the market," said Jim Rutherford, the Hurricanes general manager.
Rutherford said a key aspect to the deal is Gale Force receiving additional money from the authority to cover rising utility fees, terrorism insurance and game-day expenses. The Hurricanes previous 20-year lease was signed in 1999, before the terrorist attacks of Sept. 11 and before energy costs began to rise exponentially.
Financial details of the new agreement will be revealed at a press conference being held Friday morning.
Ray Rouse, the chairman of the Centennial Authority, said none of the additional money for the Hurricanes is coming from the hotel and meals tax collected by Wake County and Raleigh. Those funds, he said, continue to be only used to make improvements to the building.
Under its current lease, Gale Force pays a minimum of $2.7 million in rent a year. If it makes more than $50 million in gross revenue, it pays 6 percent of the first $5 million after the $50 million, and 3 percent of anything over $55 million.
The new agreement also calls for improvements to be made to the RBC Center's basketball facilities and parking lot that were requested by N.C. State University, which plays basketball games at the arena. NCSU will also have more say about how the authority spends $6 million earmarked for future upgrades to the arena.
Rutherford said fans should notice a number of upgrades inside the arena by the beginning of next hockey season. Those improvements will include a new sound system, a renovated club-level restaurant, new flat screen televisions and the ability to pay for food at concession stands with credit cards.
Rouse said the agreement is an achievement in itself.
"All gave some and got something in return," he said. "This really is a remarkable partnership."
The RBC Center cost $155 million to build and opened in 1999. The arena was paid for with donations from the state, NCSU and bonds financed by the city and county hotel and meals tax. Both Wake County and Raleigh are partners in the Centennial Authority.
For years, critics have complained that the arena, which is west of the Interstate 440 Beltline in a lightly developed area, is not close enough to restaurants and hotels that would encourage ticket-holders to spend money.
In 2006, the Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association basketball tournament left Raleigh and the RBC Center for Charlotte, in part because the Queen City's venue is closer to a downtown.
Rutherford said the Hurricanes will have the option of an another 5-year extension when the current agreement expires in 2024. 6/12/2008 7:47:12 PM |
