haven't lost at Minnesota since '77 !

and State didn't lose to Duke! this is a rare bright spot in the football season!

Feagin did well, D line looked good... Sheridan actually led the team and didn't commit crucial turnovers. Will be interesting to see if they put Threet back in.

The end.

This season is on the books. It technically happened.

But I'm putting it from memory. Inexcusable. Rrod's little system clearly not ready for the big time.

The players just seem to be going through the motions and not really giving a damn. They just want to get through with this season already. It reminds me of the end of State's last basketball season.

Quote :
"Rich Rodriguez is always open and willing to discuss almost anything.

But when the topic of personnel arose at Thursday’s U-M Football Bust at Laurel Manor in Livonia, the Michigan coach declined to discuss specifics.

The Wolverines are in a transition phase and, as he pointed out last week, there may still be some attrition among the players.

Yet many of those situations are still developing and, with the end of the semester at hand, he doesn’t want to talk about anything unless it’s official.

So observers are left to notice the absences from the Bust – where all of the players sit on a two level dais at the front of the room. A few players were apparently not in attendance, notably freshman tailback Sam McGuffie, junior defensive end/tight end Carson Butler and tailback Avery Horn.

Rodriguez, who had mentioned McGuffie’s distance from his Texas home and from his younger brother last week, refused to talk about the players or his staff on Thursday but spoke generally about his past two weeks.

“A good bit of it I have (done), as far as evaluation, there’s still some things I’m studying,” he said. “I’m talking about everything, coaching, personnel to gameday experience to everything you would want to look at as a head coach in our program, I’ve spent the last couple weeks doing that. But I’d do that anyway, this is not abnormal. But I’ve had more time to do that than normal (without bowl preparation.)”

Mcguffie and others leaving the program. At least we are getting rid of the trash that doesn't want to be in the system. They would just be a disease, a "JJ Hickson" if you will.
Good riddance and I wish them the worst.

Quote :
"Sam McGuffie is leaving the Michigan football program.

The freshman tailback's one season at U-M ended with a transfer, the Free Press has confirmed, a decision McGuffie made public Friday through an interview with TheWolverine.com.

The decision does not come as much of a surprise following coach Rich Rodriguez's recent comments.

Last Saturday, Rodriguez said he had met with McGuffie a few times since the end of the season and the tailback had not made a definite decision about his future. But in his comments the past few weeks, Rodriguez admitted that McGuffie had challenges being so far away from home, including a brother in Texas who was partially his responsibility to care for, as well as some of McGuffie's medical concerns after suffering three concussions while playing this season.

McGuffie did not attend the season-ending team banquet as the other seniors and returning players did.

He went home the last week of the season following a death in his family but returned late in the Ohio State week and appeared on the field for one play, a return, when he was hit so hard he suffered his third concussion.

McGuffie's season totals of 486 rushing yards and three rushing touchdowns, plus 19 catches for 175 yards and one touchdown in 10 games, were impressive. But most of the production came early in the season, including 100-plus-yard rushing games against Notre Dame and Toledo.

He was the first true freshman tailback to start a season opener for Michigan in the modern era and started the first six games before being replaced by junior Brandon Minor.

McGuffie is expected to attend a school in Texas, having strongly considered Texas A&M and Baylor.

McGuffie joins a growing list of players apparently not returning from this season's team. Rodriguez has confirmed that Zion Babb, Jason Kates and Artis Chambers are transferring, and said last Saturday that Carson Butler and Avery Horn appear to be going as well. Rodriguez said offensive lineman Cory Zirbel's playing career is over after a devastating knee injury.

^^^I can think of bigger sleazes:
Nick Saban
Bobby Petrino

RRod is in a similar position to Sidney Lowe. He has a team of players that don't fit his preferred system. More room to recruit players that are a better fit. I'm still a bit worried about their defense. And losing McGuffie hurts, and it sucks he had THREE concussions in one season... I did not realize he got one against OSU.

yesssss... scott schafer out as defensive coordinator.

please to get someone who does not coach their lazy ass up in the press box

Quote :
"Michigan defensive coordinator Scott Shafer resigned Tuesday after only one season on the job.

Big Ten blog

ESPN.com's Adam Rittenberg writes about all things Big Ten in his conference blog.

• Blog network

Wolverines head coach Rich Rodriguez announced Shafer's resignation, saying "moving in a different direction" was the best move for the program. Michigan finished with a school-record nine losses this season and missed a bowl game for the first time since 1967.

"I appreciate Scott's hard work on behalf of Michigan football the past year," Rodriguez said in a statement. "He is a good football coach, a good person and a true professional. We wish him well in the future."

Shafer on Tuesday told the Detroit Free Press that he did resign and was not fired. Speculation about his future mounted when he did not participate in several major recruiting weekends in recent weeks. Shafer was the only Michigan assistant who hadn't been with Rodriguez at West Virginia or served on Michigan's previous coaching staff.

Despite returning all four starting defensive linemen and some experience in the secondary, Michigan ranked 10th in the Big Ten in points allowed (28.9 ppg) and ninth in yards allowed (366.9 ypg). Shafer had overseen successful defenses at Stanford, Western Michigan and Northern Illinois but struggled to produce similar results at Michigan.

"We just had a mutual decision," Shafer told the Free Press. "We had different thoughts on the way we did things. I take full responsibility for the demise of where Michigan's program is at this time."

Rodriguez did not name a replacement for Shafer. If he chooses to hire in-house, linebackers coach Jay Hopson, who served as defensive coordinator at Southern Miss from 2005 to '07, would be the likely choice. "

hollllly shit... now im losing my positive outlook... shavodrick beaver decommits and is going to tulsa last second

this is such a dick move... he tried to get his name out by saying he's gonna play for the big blue then go play it safe at tulsa cause he's afraid to compete at michigan

tate forcier and justin feagin for the qb competition

http://www.freep.com/article/20081219/SPORTS06/81219101/1054

Quote :
"Rich Rodriguez and Michigan were dealt a significant blow Friday when it was reported one of its two current quarterback commitments, Shavodrick Beaver, decommitted and chose Tulsa, according to Rivals.com. Beaver spoke to the website InsideTulsaSports.com and confirmed their news.

"The (primary) thing this class needed was depth at the quarterback position," TheWolverine.com recruiting analyst Josh Helmholdt said Friday. "Losing Beaver certainly hurts on that level. I always believed (fellow commitment) Tate Forcier was the best prepared to come in and lend immediate help. Beaver had a lot of upside but wasn't as far along. Still, it definitely hurts."

As one of two early U-M quarterback commitments last summer, it appeared Beaver and Kevin Newsome had no problems competing against each other in 2009. But then Newsome decommitted, opening a spot for another quarterback, Forcier, but Beaver continued to remain strong in his public comments about U-M. In fact, he told Helmholdt this week he was still planning to come to U-M.

In an interview with the Free Press last May, Beaver's coach at Wichita Falls (Texas) Rider, Scott Ponder, said Beaver had no problem competing and "that's the nature of the position." Ponder said at the time Beaver didn't want to wait and miss the second quarterback spot at U-M.

In a system where the quarterback takes significant hits as a runner, Rodriguez has always felt multiple QBs kept competition and was important to have many talented performers at the spot.

Losing a four-star quarterback prospect is an immediate problem for U-M, which had been closing in on its final four to five commitments for the class and had Beaver planning to enroll in January, along with Forcier. Now a big issue remains and Forcier will have a major edge over any other QB that joins the class, having experienced spring practice.

Helmholdt said he anticipates U-M evaluating the remaining quarterback prospects over the looming two-week dead period, which begins Dec. 22, and making a push for a second one when the contact period is live again in January.

Newsome, the No. 4-ranked dual-threat QB is now committed to Penn State and Beaver, the No. 8 QB is headed to Tulsa. Forcier is No. 6 and still committed but filling another spot is challenging at this juncture. The No. 2 and 3 dual-threat QBs, Tyrik Rollison and Tajh Boyd, remain uncommitted but neither had U-M on their list with the Wolverines' previous circumstances.

a little old, but for the michigan fans

greg robinson, ex cuse coach, hired as defensive coordinator

http://www.freep.com/article/20090120/SPORTS06/90120090/1054/SPORTS06/U-M+hires+Greg+Robinson+as+defensive+coordinator

Quote :
"After an extended search, Rich Rodriguez has his defensive coordinator.

Greg Robinson, Syracuse’s head coach until he was fired last season, has joined Michigan’s staff, the school announced Tuesday. Robinson, 57, has orchestrated defenses for back-to-back Super Bowl champions and for the Texas Longhorns.

He replaces Scott Shafer, whose defense in his lone year in Ann Arbor allowed more points per game (28.9) than any in U-M history. Shafer, who favored a traditional 4-3 scheme, differed with Rodriguez in philosophies.

It’s not clear what style of defense Robinson will run at U-M. Syracuse used multiple defenses during his tenure.

“Greg brings a wealth of experience as a defensive coordinator, both at the collegiate and professional level,” Rodriguez said in a released statement. “We are excited to have Greg, Laura and their entire family join our Michigan family. I know that Greg will work well with our defensive staff, entire football staff and players.”

U-M announced Shafer’s resignation Dec. 16. The Free Press later reported that a settlement agreement called for Shafer to be paid until May as long as he didn’t speak ill of U-M or its personnel or find another job. He has since been hired, ironically, by Syracuse.

Robinson instantly becomes the U-M staff member with the most diverse and accomplished résumé. He has served as an assistant coach at five schools, including as the co-defensive coordinator at Texas in 2004, when the Longhorns beat U-M in the Rose Bowl. He previously had defeated U-M with UCLA’s staff in the 1982 Rose Bowl.

He was an NFL defensive coordinator for the 10 years, including one year with the Jets in 1994 (under close friend Pete Carroll, with whom he played at Pacific), in 1995-2000 with the Broncos and in 2001-03 with the Chiefs. He won two Super Bowls with Denver.

“Greg’s a high-energy, creative, hardworking guy who has had success at both the NFL and collegiate levels,” Texas coach Mack Brown said. “He’s a veteran coach with a wealth of knowledge who the players really respond to. His season here in 2004 produced one of the best defenses in Texas history and helped set the stage for our national championship season in 2005.”

Robinson helped mold Texas linebacker Derrick Johnson into a first-round NFL pick.

“The first thing I think about when I think of coach Robinson is his passion for coaching and love of the game,” Johnson said. “He’s a players’ coach who is very patient with his players and works well with everyone. He knows how to get his point across about what he expects and has you prepared for everything on game day.

He’s a guy who has a lot of experience and has won Super Bowls, so you know he knows what he’s doing. Then, when you get working in his defense, you really see it because he puts you in a position to make plays.”

Robinson left Texas to take the Syracuse job in 2005 and struggled to a 10-37 record. He was fired Nov. 17

He is reportedly still due $1.1 million for the final year of his Syracuse contract. Although his contract terms with U-M were not disclosed, it is believed he will make close to Shafer’s salary of $265,000. U-M’s highest-paid assistant is offensive coordinator Calvin Magee, who made $275,000 last year.

Robinson, who was at the Senior Bowl in Mobile, Ala., on Tuesday, did not return calls.

Rodriguez coached against Robinson in 2005-07, when Rodriguez was at West Virginia. The Mountaineers won all three meetings, though the game in 2005 — Robinson’s debut at Syracuse — was 15-7.

At Michigan, Robinson will inherit a young group with at least three potential stars: defensive linemen Brandon Graham and Mike Martin, and cornerback Donovan Warren.
