It's Sanskrit and originally from the Upanishads (Hindu scriptures). The closest translation into English is "the peace which passeth understanding". Shanti matras are peace prayers - shantih is repeated three times to "clear" obstacles from obtaining internal, external, and divine peace. I got it from The Wasteland by T. S. Eliot - it's repeated three times at the end.

So the quick answer it that it means inner peace, but it's really more than that.

I can't read or speak actual Sanskrit and getting something on my arm that I can't legitimately translate (ie a Chinese symbol) just doesn't seem brilliant to me (no offense to anyone who has one). It is from the Upanishads which are Hindu scriptures which are considered to be Sanskrit literature.

I'm an English Major and am kind of in the process of studying it (on my own, for myself) - I started with the "Shantih shantih shantih" at the end, liked what I learned, and decided (for personal reasons) that I wanted to get it as a tattoo...

Everyone I have talked to swears by UPS. I mean, when you first start as a PTer it really sucks because you bust your ass for pretty much no money. but they have full benefits, even for their PTers. If you can hang in there long enough to get a FT position though, it's gravy. One of my friends is a shift manager and he makes like $70k a year, and he barely graduated high school.
