ECU - Some number of points put up by a decently balanced team with every element present. NCSU - Hopefully at least one field goal and at least one defensive touchdown.

the only ranking that matters is the one next to your team's name but even then, big shit. nobody is gonna spot you 7 points just because you're ranked. still gotta go out there and play football. this has all the makings of the perfect trap game. 9/19/2008 1:02:05 AM |

but they will stand there with the fire extinguishers full of pepper spray if we are winning late
and if it is a close game, we will lose because they jinxed us.

Will we go into MELTDOWN MODE if we do not score a touchdown on offense?
I think to beat ECU we will have to score on our first drive. Not normally fair to say, but under our circumstances I do believe that it is a must. If I was Skip, I would put the ball in our hands first, because he knows that he can score, but can we? 9/19/2008 11:07:34 AM |

I think this game will be fairly close until about mid way through the 3rd Q. The defense will keep us in it until they wear out again. I am thinking 10-0 at the half, 17-0 at the end of 3, and 30-0 as a final score.
There is no way we score a TD. ECU is not going to make the same mistakes it made against Tulane and thus we have no chance to put up 7. Shitkowski can't make a FG outside of 25 yards so we basically have no chance to score. 9/19/2008 12:43:57 PM |

EZU isn't going to come in here and put up fucking 30 points. Our D is better than WVU's and I think we're comparable to VT at least first string (they lost a lot).
If they put up 30, it means we turned the ball over a LOT. I still think we lose this game, but its going to be close. Probably 17-10, with someone on our team turning the ball over on a potential game tying drive at the end. 9/19/2008 12:49:39 PM |

It's about the time of the year that TOB and the offense have evaluated themselves, know what we can do and what we can't. I expect to see some adjustments and some offensive production. Not sure if it will be enough.
Realistically: 24-14 ECU
Dreaming: 24-17 pack

So Toney Baker is done for the season, Anthony Hill is out for Saturday (what's going on here? it seems like a strained pectoral muscle would heal fairly quickly) but Eugene is probable for Saturday which could give our offense a much needed boost as he proved a capable receiver last year. Also, here's a nice piece by Caulton Tudor that is very positive about our fanbase:
Quote : | "N.C. State fans are grumbling, and they have a right to.
Various segments of the Wolfpack World are upset with football coach Tom O’Brien, basketball coach Sidney Lowe and/or athletics director Lee Fowler.
These are dark days for State. To say otherwise is to disregard scoreboards, which are the first and ultimately, the final, measure of popularity.
In my 40 or so years of covering sports in North Carolina, the most loyal fan base across the spectrum has been State’s. Through almost as much thin as thick, they've purchased the tickets, attended the games, followed through on their financial pledges and stood by their own, including alum Chuck Amato for longer than would have been the case at most area schools.
Having said that, O’Brien — and to some extent, Fowler — seriously need a win over East Carolina on Saturday. The reason for that has more to do with morale than the current record. While O’Brien has gone 6-9 record thus far, he did go 2-0 last season against the Pirates and North Carolina.
In and of itself, that may not sound like any great accomplishment. UNC lost eight games last season and ECU, despite its impressive work down the season’s stretch, did lose five, including a certified wipeout at Marshall.
But former State coach Dick Sheridan, who very, very rarely tipped his hand, much less his mind, once told me that the two primary keys to almost every season were keeping Carolina and ECU at bay. Sheridan long ago departed the Wolfpack sidelines, but the mood in the fan base hasn’t changed a great deal.
Whether it’s entirely based on sound logic or not, State and Carolina fans assume they should be better in almost all sports than ECU. Budget for budget, they are completely correct. The problem there is that ECU, in football and to an extent in baseball, has no little respect for program funding. With the Pirates, it's all about respect. That's the hole card they play best and regularly use to trump big game.
Lou Holtz, during his stint at State in the early '70s, said of the then still-young ECU rivalry: "Against those guys, it's not so much about X's and O's. It's about fire in the belly."
Little has changed on that front. That’s really what State fans will want to see Saturday — the flame of a rivalry that extends beyond the records of the two teams. If O’Brien can strike that match again — as he did last season in Greenville — he won't hear a lot of howling for a while. " |

good read. especially coming from tudor.
so with irving having established himself as our best player, and our program having established itself as one plagued with injuries and losses, i'm just waiting for his season ending injury. this is nc state.
and if he makes it through this season alive, then i'm just waiting for him to bolt for the nfl. this is nc state. 9/19/2008 3:35:04 PM |

I wonder why people say stuff like that, I hear the same sentiment from my dad whenever I say something about Tudor. Maybe I just haven't been reading the sports section of the N&O long enough, but pretty much all the stuff he writes about State is complementary of the fanbase if not the teams, which is perfectly reasonable since the State teams he's writing about are often not very good.9/19/2008 3:37:50 PM |

From Every Day Should Be Saturday
Quote : | "#15 East Carolina @ North Carolina State
ORSON, IRRATIONAL. ECU. North Carolina State really isn’t fielding so much of a football team as an eleven-fold object lesson in humility clad in cleats, and that ECU is due to hold the sprained, barely sparking neurons of this country’s college football punditry hostage until they lose to a Conference USA team in a moment of slack attention sometime in June.
We’re reading Shadows in the Brain right now, and therefore suggests an experiment borrowed from research conducted in the book. People who lose limbs can eliminate a lot of phantom pain simply by being shown a reversed image of themselves in a mirror (so it looks like the side without the arm has an arm.) The brains sees it, says “Hello, arm,” and the phantom pain ceases.
We suggest NC State bluescreen videos of their players doing incredible feats of football agility: actually scoring TDs, picking off passes, making one-handed heel tackles of fleet running backs. Then, the team should watch them on a daily basis. Even though they will look obviously fake, it still would work as well as anything they’re doing right now, because they suuuuuuuuuck like baby goats at the teat right now.
HOLLY, QUASI-RATIONAL: ECU’s marquee win over West Virginia looks a mite less sparkly in the wake of the entire country being confronted last night with the irrefutable fact that Bill Stewart is aw-shucksing the Mountaineers into an early grave. Good thing they won’t need to lift a finger to stop the Wolfpack, which has already lost in ouchy fashion to South Carolina and Clemson (brothers in state, in hate, and in being very, very bad at football)." |
