I mentioned the food chain.

You said we aren't above the other animals, and I say we are.

SaabTurbo: if all the farms were like the "good ones" then the animal rights people probably wouldn't be quite so up in arms.

here in quebec there are much stricter laws governing dairy farms and there are government quotas that farms have to bid on as well as a price floor. this keeps the farms pretty small, so emphasis IS on making the individual cow produce as much milk as possible rather than using huge numbers of cattle like many HUGE dairy farms in the US, son.

btw, I am not a son.

good point...though i'm curious as to how much extra waste a vegan/vegetarian produces compared to an omnivore, since most of what they eat is cellulose, which they can't digest, anyway

and i'm betting they produce more greenhouse gases

Sadly this seems to be true a lot of the time. The program I work for, a lot of the people we get tend to be vegetarian. And they tend to be the whiniest motherfuckers about things in general. Not all of them, obviously, but a ridiculous amount of them are.

vegans are fucking weird, annoying, and generally unlikeable.

you're trying to say that milking isn't cruel because the cows are uncomfortable if they aren't milked? that's not a good argument. cows produce milk because they recently gave birth and had the calf taken and put on soy based formula. the cow is only 'in need of being milked' because of human intervention.

To make ethical sense out of milking cattle, you have to assert that human benefit is more important that cow discomfort. Any arguments that claim that the animals benefit from the relationship are wasted because they would infinitely benefit more from life without human intervention or by not existing at all. "all life is precious" doesn't work when you are talking about living food factories. All those who say so had better be against abortion and capital punishment too.

I eat cheese, kill babies and let murderers get shanked by their own kind. The happiness of the living people is what has the most daily effect on me.

That's one of the best reasons to become vegan I've ever heard. Anything nonviolent that inexplicably prompts folks to violence probably should be done.

lol, that's one of the worst reason's yet. Forget about the cute fluffy animals, forget about trying to better one's self with veggies, etc. Going veg because of fear of violence only reenforces that vegans are hippies.

^yeah, there are.
Seems like most people don't like anybody who does not do exactly as they do. Some vegans are very guilty of this, as well as omnivorous eaters (as shown by this thread).

what if for them its not a stupid choice? Just because you think its stupid doesn't mean it is. What if they think eating meat is "stupid"?

then they're just stupid. And I'm talking about the ones who think it's healthier or better, have a holier than thou attitude, who try to shut down farms, who say eating animals is wrong, etc.

I guess I didn't express myself well. That folks want to hurt their kids for a dietary choice suggests great cultural importance placed on consuming meat. I see an idol to be smashed.

I see what you mean.

but is it culturally important? I think its more out of concern for the kids health. Same reason kids are told to eat all of their dinner and not so many cookies.
