When the season ended, this group of Gamecocks etched their name next to failures of the past. Once again South Carolina failed to reach the postseason. Once again, they ended conference play without a winning record. For the third season in a row they went 0-4 against the big three from the East and in state rival Clemson. The lopsided defeats in the 2004 contests against these four teams brought the total point differential margin to 191 points that Carolina has been outscored by in those four “rivalry” games over the last three seasons. South Carolina has allowed 23 or more points in nine of those games, and scored 23 or more only once. The Quarterback who was going to “shock the conference” didn’t make it to the third game of the season. Gamecock players gave Coach Holtz an early retirement gift during the final contest of the season in a 22-point loss to Clemson by delaying the game nearly ten minutes midway through the fourth quarter. The reason for the delay was frustrated South Carolina players started an ugly on-field altercation. The actions led to a postseason ban by the University. A team that had positioned itself to accomplish what only 11 teams before them had accomplished, instead took their place in Gamecock history as the 100th team that failed to reach postseason. Coach Holtz called the scene, his “biggest disappointment.” For many it was just another chapter of “This is South Carolina football.” On November 23, 2004, South Carolina named Steve Spurrier as the schools Head Football Coach. Spurrier brings to South Carolina a .777 college winning percentage. His resume includes six SEC titles, one ACC title, and one national championship. Coach Spurrier holds the mark with the all-time highest winning percentage in SEC play. Spurrier will also bring to Columbia the highest expectations in the schools history. Spurrier finished in the Final AP Top 15 twelve consecutive seasons at Florida, so that is what we should expect at South Carolina. Spurrier had a career record of 11-1 against Georgia while at the Gator helm, so that is what we should expect at South Carolina. Gamecock players have greeted Coach Spurrier’s arrival in emblematic Carolina fashion with an abundance of team rules violations and felony arrests. In January, six players were charged after a total of $18,000 worth of computer and video equipment and framed photographs were taken from South Carolina's stadium in late November. The incident resulted in Offensive Lineman Woody Telfort being charged with a felony count of grand larceny, and numerous other charges against players. On March 1st leading rusher Demetris Summers was dismissed from the team. A day later, Tackle Kevin Mainord was arrested for stealing televisions from dorm rooms. Defensive End Moe Thompson was also arrested on similar charges six days later. On April 16th, two more Gamecock players, Josh Johnson and Ty Erving, were arrested and charged with simple marijuana possession. Less than two weeks later, WR David Smith pled guilty to third degree burglary. In late May, Linebacker Dustin Lindsey was charged with DUI. On June 23rd, Cory Boyd was dismissed from the team. In all, twelve players have been arrested in the 2005 calendar year. It’s been a typical Gamecock offseason. But, all will be suppressed in less than two months, when 111 years of South Carolina’s losing tradition will be changed. The man who will single handedly change the program has arrived in Columbia-sounds similar to what we were told before Holtz’ arrival. When Spurrier accepted the job to lead the Gamecocks, he commented, “They really haven’t ever done much here.” No kidding Steve, welcome to South Carolina football. "

Clem Johnson's time at Valley Forge Military College wasn't all that different from the structured environment he's found at NC State.

Considering coach Tom O'Brien has a military background, Johnson said he felt right at home when he transferred last summer.

"He definitely does not play," Johnson said. " ... That's one of the reasons the transformation was so smooth."

Still, it could have been a little smoother had Johnson not broken his jaw before the season even began, and sprained his ankle on Nov. 22 at North Carolina just when he was starting to make a comeback. With the loss of two starters in the secondary who were among the top five tacklers on the team -- boundary corner Jeremy Gray and safety J.C. Neal -- the Pack needs Johnson to stay healthy in his final year of eligibility, as he is expected to be a starter in an otherwise inexperienced secondary.

"With me being a senior, I guess some people are expecting me to do a lot better than what I did last year," he said. "A lot of people saw what I can do, coming off my injury, being able to perform as a transfer ... I think a lot of people have higher expectations for me since I'm going through the winter workouts this year, and I'm able to learn the playbook and have better preparation than I did last year."

Johnson recovered from his broken jaw sooner than expected, and started five of the final six games last year. His return gave the defense a much-needed boost and helped propel the Pack to their four-game winning streak. Johnson missed the Nov. 29 win over Miami because of his ankle, but started in the Papajohns.com Bowl.

Johnson has had a strong winter so far and said he's getting closer to being 100 percent. Despite his injuries, Johnson still played in eight games and made 40 tackles, two interceptions and three pass breakups. Safety Jimmaul Simmons and cornerback Dominique Ellis were the backups at their respective positions last year and will compete for starting jobs. Safety Javon Walker, who was a starter before he tore his ACL, will be back in the fall and add to the competition.

Johnson was a running, athletic quarterback who also played defensive back at Valley Forge because he said he didn't want to play quarterback in college. Because he joined NC State late, he was forced to compensate for what he didn't know in the playbook with his athleticism. This year, he said he's much more comfortable knowing the defense.

"That's pretty much all I'm worried about, besides academics and school," he said. "I'm really excited about getting everything started back up with spring ball, and hitting the weights. I'm just trying to prepare myself and give 100 percent through winter workouts and get ready for the season."

* Running back Toney Baker is back after missing most of the past two seasons with injuries. He reportedly looks like he's in great shape, but how he holds up physically will be important after the graduation of leading rusher Andre Brown.
* There's another backup quarterback situation in Raleigh, as the Pack lost both of last season's reserves. And if any team needs backups, it's this one. NC State had to start three different quarterbacks because of injuries last year. There are high hopes for Mike Glennon, who redshirted last season.
* NC State will have to replace two starters in the secondary in cornerback Jeremy Gray and J.C. Neal. Safety Clem Johnson, who missed time because of a jaw injury last year, has high hopes for a breakout season. They'll need him to be a leader back there.

They did get a lot better though in respect to getting the running game going. The O-line looks like it will be a future strength of our team rather than a constant weakness.

Tom O'Brien (or at least someone in the new regime) listened to the fans gripes about looking too much like the Atlanta Falcons and that the Rivers era uniforms were the best. I think besides looking clean and classic the Rivers era unis evoke good feelings out of most fans b/c they begin to remember all of the winning and good times. It was a smart move imo.

I talked with coach Tom O'brien the other night right before the first wolfpack club caravan stop in Edenton and he was very optimistic about this coming fall and spring. Unlike most times when he just tells it like it is he was high on the offensive line, especially Sam Jones, R.J. Mattes, and Andrew Wallace. I ask about Donald Bowens and he said that he had a long way to go to recovery. He said that the QB situation was a good situation to have, referring to Glennon and Wilson. He said that Glennon had to prove he was a good player and that we already knew what Wilson was capable of. I was very pleased to hear how optimistic he was about the team as a whole.

I'm just saying every coach is pretty much optimistic but TOB is a straight shooter unlike Chuck Amato. He will tell you when there is something lacking. He said that the team would be a lot better than last year....which is expected but it was good to hear it from him.

Regarding the unis: I definitely like them better than the Falcons Amato jerseys we used to have. Still, those Nike Rivers-era jerseys were just so simple and badass.

I really wish we'd return to a Nike sponsorship. If we can't though, I'm fine with our jerseys now. I just wish they'd take that 3-wolf emblem off the front ... looks a little K-mart to me.
