horner and gonzalez might be two of the worst players to see the floor in an acc game while the game was still competitive

and horner played half the fucking game

did lowe just decide costner had quit again? i dont understand why you dont play your best player especially when that player tends to quit if the isnt in the game

that is an unbelievable stat

no points in the final 6 minutes of a game, we could be up by 20 points and still lose if that trend keeps up

Whenever I miss a game, I like coming to the last page of the game thread to see what the atmosphere is. If its optimistic/good hearted, then I know we won. If its pessimistic and in the dumps, we lost.

I can't remember the last time one of these basketball threads hasn't been in the dumps

This team reminds me of the one that Purdue had in Keady's final years: They produced and played well for the majority of the game, had at least one player with lots of talent (David Teague), but often could not hold on to a game.

earlier today: "FSU 65 State 60......tied with 5 minutes to go and we blow it like usual."

close...63-59 lead until we gave up a 19-2 run.. seriously, who else in the entire country, could POSSIBLY take a 4pt lead, all the momentum, and the home crowd...against an average acc team.. and somehow lose by 15 $$*%(%ing points!?!?! seriously...i haven't been this livid about a game in a while.

this is a game we needed to win, and there's no reason we shouldn't have.

watching us fight back after halftime, and then play a normal looking basketball game, take the lead..and then lose like THAT,
is sorta like..

going to the hospital, getting a successful triple-bypass heart surgery...
then the next morning, you choke and die on your breakfast bagel....

thats what i feel like just happened

At the same time, you and others who post similar comments shouldn't post on b-ball threads for the remainder of the season. If you do, your integrity is, justifiably... creditable.

Mays/Williams/Thomas did look pretty good tonight though offensively.. I think we just have a bunch of other stupid players on the team, and by stupid I mean autistic.

State was in this game. They were in position for a big win. The right before the 6:30 mark, in comes three key players: Costner, Fells, and McCauley.

Fells missed several forced shots in key momements, and he missed them BADLY. Costner missed a couple wide open shot from beyond the arc, and did nothing to create a shot. McCauley looked to shoot ONCE, an he airballed it against the backboard. In thr most critical stretch of the game, our 3 most talented veteran leaders disappeared. The blame for this loss falls squarely on them.

In a hard fought game against a conference opponent, leadership and experience is exceptionally important. State didn't have that today. It's a tough loss, and the team will no doubt learn important lessons from it, but those lessons could have been gained in a WIN had our veterans stepped up down the stretch.

I think it speaks volumes about our team when you look at who played well in this game. I was GLAD to see McCauley and Costner on the bench. Thomas and Smith out hustled, scored inside, and DIDN'T TURN THE BALL OVER.

I'm encouraged by the development of Thomas, Mays, Williams, etc, but young players look to veterans in tough games and tight situations. And they did, and they saw our veterans put up BAD shots, miss open shots, and turn the ball over.

That's the ballgame.

I agree with Erios.... our top 3 (fells, mccauley, costner) can't be down because they aren't getting minutes. When they come in it has to count, and Costner and Fells need to bring more intensity specifically.

Sidney said it himself during the post game interview that he kept using the lineup that was working..... then he subbed in our "top 3" to end it out... ugh.

LMAO at the trumpet who bowled over Pete Strickland during the Fast Fight.... was that Master_Locke ?

The same can be said for the bench players

Oh wait they came in and got us the damn lead

The majority of our points came off the bench

The big 3 know what they have too do, they have been in that situation before. They didnt execute and lost us the game.

that's what gets me about people bitching about horner being in the game and/or costner being on the bench. horner was in when we were playing well, and costner was out when we were playing well.

i'm feeling myself turn on sidney lowe though, and i don't like it

THE MAJORITY OF OUR TEAMS MINUTES CAME OFF THE BENCH!!

look, i love mays, i think he should start, look back at the marquette thread and me complaining about sid having degand in at the end

if mays started, smith would be our best bench player

williams has show flashes

thomas looked ok tonight, i wouldnt mind him getting a little more burn

but horner?? how does dennis horner get the 3rd highest minutes?? you seriously think that horner is better than costner? horner couldnt tie costner's shoe laces even when costner is dogging it.

Costner played the 7th most minutes tonight and was still the 3rd leading scorer. that doesnt mean anything?

^^I mean around 5 mins I was saying that too, cmon Sid time to bring back Costner and McCauley, and not 30 seconds later he calls a time out and does just that.....

I can't believe how flat we finished but I think all these close losses are getting in their heads, we just cannot finish as a team when it matters

I remember the first year he got here, he played Fells, McCauley and Costner 37 minutes a game, because he had to. You know what happened that year? They played so well together come ACC Tourney time, they almost won 4 games in 4 days to win the ACC. The way he's playing 5 guys 20 minutes and another 5 guys the other 20 minutes, it's almost like he's playing two different games every game. He's not allowing our team to come together themselves, he's trying to force it. That will ultimately be his doom if it continues.

^ I have to agree, if we can't win with a huge spread in minutes, we might as well try the '06-'07 method again..

you play your best 5 players and pick 3-4 other guys to rest them or give a change of pace

Costner started out hot and scored just about all of his points before he got into foul trouble in the first. He did nothing of consequence in the second half with the minutes he got.

I dont like horner getting that many minutes but costner wasnt doing shit either.

are you seriously advocating playing these players full time when we aren't forced to?

yeah, we might win some games, or something, but even then i really don't get the logic.

play the young guys. this is a season where we can at best hope for a miracle and make the NIT. There's no reason to hang our heads about it, that's just the way it is. let's hope the team plays hard and improves.

the freshmen looked good, so we need to give them an opportunity to play.

yea good pt, since costner quits on the team sometimes, lets just fold the season after the 2nd acc game.

we should play the young guys, like dennis horner, ever more

[Edited on January 13, 2009 at 10:22 PM. Reason : wait, i just remembered, isnt winning the whole point of playing?]

^ you are dumb if u think that mccauley, costner, and fells should get significant minutes at this juncture.... itd be different if they were producing any... but they are not

also, horner should never see the court for more than5 minutes... but when ur only legit post player is tracy smith, someone else has to play down low and id rather it be mccauley or costner than horner right now

^ we don't know how well they could do together for extended periods because it never happens... we looked great out of the gates tonight.

From the ESPN recap:
"The Wolfpack lost their third straight and dropped into a three-way tie for last place in the ACC with Georgia Tech and North Carolina."
