hmm, you sort of have a point there, but that really isn't wearing them in public. I was at my friend's house party where there were about 20 people who I have known for a while. It's not like I was wearing them in a public bar.

mind if i ask what your research project is? are you studying with heatwole? is it just copperheads you're milking, or are there other species?

and i was just talking about it being a habit of pinning wild venomous snakes for fun. some people do it, but most people shun it. research is a whole different thing, though.

Yup, it is with Heatwole and it's just copperheads, but the research can be applied to any pit viper

Yeah trust me... after working with them, I don't understand why people go out and pin them "just for fun" -- yeah it's a rush, and I know I'm not going to die from a bite or anything... but I know it's going to hurt like hell and why would you risk it? Plus if they spray you, you smell God awful the rest of the day!! Just leave the poor things alone.. unless it's for research of course

Oh and we're trying to making an alternative to venom gland excision by plugging up the fang, in a sense... We use dental composites -- it's kind of like filling a cavity. But the procedure is completely reversible since they periodically shed their fangs and it's much less invasive than removing their venom glands. And if you're wondering why we're doing all this in the first place -- I originally wanted to see how their venom plays a role in digestion but that's when we found out how harmful the surgery is to them and it takes them forever to recover, if they even do at all.

Seems like the younger herpers do it because they think it's macho.

Believe me, there are snakes with musk waaaaaay worse than copperheads. Actually, our native pit vipers have mild musk compared to most non-venomous species.

Yup.

Forgive me, but I was under the impression that venom gland excision was only really used for keepers. How do the fang plugs relate to the research? Testing digestion of envenomated vs. non-envenomated prey items? Or has your whole project taken a different route to test the efficacy of these plugs?

Yeah, that's what it has turned into now. I originally wanted to look how fast they digest envenomated prey vs. non-envenomated prey, so yup you were on the right track! It would mainly have been a project seeing if their venom plays a bigger role and isn't just for defensive/killing measures. We were going measure how fast their prey item went through with their venom glands intact, then remove them and do the same thing.

If keepers really do remove the venom glands of their snakes, I feel so bad for the snake. The last time anyone did research on the procedure was 1938, which is why we're trying to make an alternative... It basically mutilates their mouths, whereas our procedure only does this:

Everything is unchanged, except for the tips of their teeth
