Special features on the blu-ray are pretty cool.
The god of war 3 demo is also pretty fun. ive not played any of the previous games and it has made me want to buy 1&2.
I also thought this movie was excellent. And to an extent agree with Stein in that I thought it improved towards the end. However I didn't find the length or main character to be insufferable, but instead strengths.
I also really liked 9, but not as much as District 9. 12/26/2009 1:20:22 PM |

haha i love people that insist that everything is tied up in a little bow at the end of a movie.
so many great stories they miss out on.

Just saw this last night. I've remained surprising spoiler free as well. I was expecting more from a movie that got such universal praise, maybe that's why it let me down a bit. Expectations were too high.
I get how not providing a back-story 'adds' to the movie, but based on what I saw the back-story I came up with is pretty lame. I tried to confine it within the context of things the movie did reveal:
I'm guessing the alien ship got damaged somehow and performed an emergency landing on Earth. 1) The damage occurred to the ship itself. The equivalent of a coke can's worth of fuel (by volume) was lost and the ship no longer functioned. The coke can of fuel landed somewhere on Earth and that guy spent 20 years looking for it.
2) The damage occurred to the command module. Mental note: Do not place the command module near the exterior of the ship, it might get damaged. That guy spent 20 years fixing the module with other crap that fell from the ship and he only needed enough fuel to make the module fly back to the mothership. The mothership had plenty of fuel reserve.
I'm going to go with #2.
One highly intelligent alien, the rest you're left wondering how they know enough to put food in their mouths so they can survive. I guess I can see that. Maybe equate them to something similar to insects where a queen drives the masses. I guess the queen died in the crash? Still hard to imagine that a species that's capable of interstellar travel is that bad off when their leader isn't around. Maybe that's just how their universe works. Boss is away, time to play?
Quote : | "They are searching for him and want him alive. Leaving his door code activate gives them a very good opportunity to know his location and attempt to capture him if he decides to try and come back." |
I gotta go with the fact that they also know that he can use the alien weapons. I'd have the weapons on lock down for sure. If they put in a program to intercept the use of his codes I'd like to think that they would go the additional mile: lock out, call authorities. No reason to set it to: allow access, call authorities. We all know the actual security protocol though: stuff go boom? Send a squad.
Besides, they don't really need to leave his codes in place to know his location anyway. Dude make cellphone calls every few hours. He was so bad about remaining hidden that I was half expecting him to go straight home to his wife after they put out the APB.
Quote : | "go spray yourself in the face with some nuclear fuel (human technology) and report back to me how you feel, or how your genes might be affected." |
Lol. I guess the alien's leader was Krang. The whole mutating fuel thing... Pretty lame. I'd imagine that the fuel would be so toxic to a human that it would kill them or it wasn't really fuel and was some kind of anti-theft device. Pretty lame anti-theft device though. Slowly turning someone into your species over a 3 or 4 day period. Seems like you could still make pretty good progress with making off with the fuel cell. Given that tidbit I'm going with alien gas turns people into aliens. Maybe works considering they established that all alien tech only worked for aliens. Maybe their fuel is made up of viruses that continually make sure the aliens do indeed remain aliens each time they spill a bit of gas on themselves. Still, if the black fluid was gas then you'd think that enough fuel escaped the canister to set back that one alien's plans for a few years.
That whole mutating fuel bit had me prepped to go in an entirely different direction. I figured that one alien was just carrying out the master plan: Move from planet to planet converting the inhabitants into your species. Nope, he was just looking for a few drops of gas to ditch all his mates as he rocketed off to safety.
Maybe that whole 3 years thing plays into the subtext they were trying to establish. Even people in that abhorrent situation will abandon their mates when they suddenly find themselves in possession of riches. They could have helped everyone in the slums out (if one mech suit can do that I'd imagine the full ship could do enough to rescue everyone), and they "plan" to... someday.
Meh put too much thought into it. Above average, but I didn't feel it was worthy of all the praise it got (90% on RT).

this movie would have been better without the metamorphosis. if they came up with some other method of turning him into a fugitive that caused him to have to team up with the prawn, that would have taken away a lot of the other problems with the story 1/12/2010 12:17:07 PM |

pretty sure he had to find components from the ship that actually contained bits of fluid. i don't think it was all contained in one jar. he spent 20 years because he had to come up with enough to power the ship1/12/2010 4:29:46 PM |

except there was no crash, and there doesn't seem to be any sort of clear-cut leader. the prawns could've had a caste system similar to humans where christopher would've been some type of engineer and might therefore be a bit smarter than the rest of the occupants on the ship. think of it as if you were on a boat that wrecked, and the survivors all ended up on an island somewhere. obviously you'd have some people who were smarter and more capable than a lot of the others. keep in mind it was months before humans entered the prawns' ship. when they opened it up, they found sick, emaciated prawns. after putting them in slums for 20 years, it's not hard to see where many of these aliens might become complacent and view their situation as absolutely hopeless.

were they from his phone though? i don't remember.
Quote : | "Pretty lame anti-theft device though. Slowly turning someone into your species over a 3 or 4 day period." |
uh, that would fucking suck. hard. in no way is that lame. and it could've just been wikus mishandling the device and not really an anti-theft thing.
Quote : | "Given that tidbit I'm going with alien gas turns people into aliens." |
congrats. you really had to think hard to figure that one out.
Quote : | "he was just looking for a few drops of gas to ditch all his mates as he rocketed off to safety." |
he wasn't ditching anyone. he was gonna come back in 3 years to get the rest of his species and to help wikus.
Quote : | "Even people in that abhorrent situation will abandon their mates when they suddenly find themselves in possession of riches. They could have helped everyone in the slums out" |
again, he wasn't abandoning anyone. he didn't have a choice. he wouldn't have been able to round up all the other prawns in time without the humans getting in the way and ruining it. the best he could do was get out of there and come back as soon as possible.
Quote : | "Meh put too much thought into it." |
yeah. you really did. you bitched about minor aspects of the movie while ignoring the entire point of it.1/12/2010 6:59:00 PM |

^Guess I should have said "Pretty lame as an anti-theft device. Point is, you may turn into an alien, but you could still steal the thing. Hence it really wouldn't prevent someone from stealing it unless it had a big warning label that said "DO NOT STEAL OR THIS WILL TURN YOU INTO AN ALIEN... UNLESS YOU ALREADY ARE!!1!!'
Quote : | "congrats. you really had to think hard to figure that one out." |
That's where I was weighing the options. Was it fuel that infected that human or was that some other liquid that was meant to be an anti-theft device? So rephrased: Given that the anti-theft device idea is completely ridiculous, it must have been their gas that turned him into aliens. Congrats, for not being able to see how the idea brought up in one sentence can carry over to another.
Sure, all the minor aspects added up to take away from the enjoyment. Always nice to see the "you just don't get it" argument come out and play when someone doesn't fall in love with every aspect of a movie, top to bottom.1/12/2010 7:26:16 PM |

the movie is an allegory. you're supposed to take details at face value as pieces of a bigger picture. you wouldn't watch the wizard of oz and bitch about how killing the wicked witch of the west by pouring water on her is stupid. the things you're bringing up as weaknesses of the movie really aren't even important in the grand scheme of things. so clearly, "you just don't get it," is a valid statement here because you couldn't address what the movie was actually about. plus, you didn't even realize that christopher's intentions were not to just ditch his people as you said.

if the black spray was an anti-theft/anti-tampering feature, surely it wasn't made to work on humans. so saying that it should have a certain result is dumb.
i can imagine it being some kind of potent alien pheromone type chemical (if it is in fact anti-tampering) and it having some effect on a human like this, similar to when women take testosterone in order to become manly.
it's just a movie though, who cares why it made him into an alien.... 1/12/2010 8:47:01 PM |
