I was 195lbs and 67in (5'7) in heightNow I weigh around 135. After boot camp I hope to weigh around 120. Lean and hard with a 6 pack is the goal!

I will agree that it's incredibly incredibly hard to get down to an underweight, incredibly fit look. I weighed around 130 in high school, I hit my highest point around 2005 when I was 195, and now I'm hovering around 170. I would definitely say that I look fit, but getting back down to 130 would take incredible amounts of training and Christian Bale-esque dieting.

Honestly, if you want to lose weight, you should probably purge your fridge/pantry and start from scratch with healthy, fresh foods. Some foods have absolutely no business in your kitchen. Here are a few good rules to follow:1. Avoid sugar and high fructose corn syrup-found in cakes, biscuits, confectionary, chocolate, candy, desserts, soft drinks and many other foods.2. Use whole grains rather than refined carbohydrates- white bread, white flour, white pastry, white pasta and white rice should be replaced with brown rice, quinoa, millet, oats, barley, rye, buckwheat and red rice.3. Avoid artificial additives- these may be sweeteners, preservatives, colorings or flavorings.4. Eat vegetables or salads with lunch and dinner- Variety is important, so experiment with those that you don't normally eat.5. Include some sources of essential fats every day- these include oily fish (such as salmon, mackerel, sardines, herrings and trout), pumpkin seeds, sunflower seeds, sesame seeds, linseeds/flaxseeds, hemp seeds, walnuts and avacadoes. Avoid processed fats such as low fat spreads and margarines.6. Avoid processed meats- ham, salami, chorizo, hot dogs, bacon and any smoked or cured meats. These all contain nitrates that have been linked to stomach cancer and are high in saturated fats and salt which are linked to stomach disease.7. Cook from scratch whenever possible- this means buying whole, natural ingredient and cooking or preparing them yourself. Avoid processed and packaged foods as much as possible.

^Those all sound like really good ideas and if I implemented that approach I would probably lose weight right now. I'm just not very good about my diet, but I know that it's 80% of what makes you lose weight. I'm trying to build lean muscle mass from running everyday. I figure, once I can run 5 miles everyday comfortably, I'll then make a drastic change in my diet, and my body fat percentage will plummet with a quickness. As for now though, I need those extra calories to make it through my runs.
10/26/2009 10:51:04 AM
^ Want to go running when I'm in town for the holidays? I'll be in Cary most of the time and could use a run buddy or two.
10/26/2009 10:53:23 AM
^^^ That sounds like a lot, but it doesn't even need to be that intense for most people to lose weight. If you do small stuff, you can see big gains without a lot of stress.1. Don't eat fast food. Ever. Stop. It is horrible.2. Don't drink soda.3. Cook your own meals. Those three things will cause most people to lose weight. Even more so if you add in exercise.^WE'RE SUPPOSED TO GO RUNNING [Edited on October 26, 2009 at 10:54 AM. Reason : ]

good post lucy, i like all those recommendations.food has always been my major vice, so it's important for me to be able to choose healthy foods. I have a tough time though, as i'm weak willed and unwillingly to go cold turkey when it comes to eating right. If anybody is like me, I suggest buying a bag of those dove dark chocolate bites and keep them in your fridge. i try to eat well during the day, and when i get one of those sweet cravings, I just have one of those to kinda 'reward' me for not pigging out on stuff i shouldn't be eating. I get dark choc. cause it's got less fat than the milk choc. And I usually have one probably every day or two, so i'm not going overboard.I have to have some kind of minor indulgance reward around my house because if there's nothing there, i'll go out and buy something really bad for me. A piece of dark chocolate works perfectly for me.

Dark chocolate is my fav cheat (other than wine). If you crave chocolate, here's a really delicious brownie recipe that's relatively healthy (other than the butter) and protein-rich:Black Bean Brownie RecipeFor those of you who have a hard time tracking down agave nectar substitute honey 1:1 for the agave nectar. 4 ounces unsweetened chocolate 1 cup unsalted butter 2 cups soft-cooked black beans, drained well (hs: canned is fine) 1 cup walnuts, chopped 1 tablespoon vanilla extract ¼ cup (granulated) natural coffee substitute (or instant coffee, for gluten-sensitive) ¼ teaspoon sea salt 4 large eggs 1½ cups light agave nectarPreheat the oven to 325°F. Line an 11- by 18-inch (rimmed) baking pan (hs note: or jellyroll pan) with parchment paper and lightly oil with canola oil spray.Melt the chocolate and butter in a glass bowl in the microwave for 1 1/2 to 2 minutes on high. Stir with a spoon to melt the chocolate completely. Place the beans, 1/2 cup of the walnuts, the vanilla extract, and a couple of spoonfuls of the melted chocolate mixture into the bowl of a food processor. Blend about 2 minutes, or until smooth. The batter should be thick and the beans smooth. Set aside. In a large bowl, mix together the remaining 1/2 cup walnuts, remaining melted chocolate mixture, coffee substitute, and salt. Mix well and set aside. In a separate bowl, with an electric mixer beat the eggs until light and creamy, about 1 minute. Add the agave nectar and beat well. Set aside.Add the bean/chocolate mixture to the coffee/chocolate mixture. Stir until blended well.Add the egg mixture, reserving about 1/2 cup. Mix well. Pour the batter into the prepared pan. Using an electric mixer, beat the remaining 1/2 cup egg mixture until light and fluffy. Drizzle over the brownie batter. Use a wooden toothpick to pull the egg mixture through the batter, creating a marbled effect. Bake for 30 to 40 minutes, until the brownies are set. Let cool in the pan completely before cutting into squares. (They will be soft until refrigerated.)Makes 45 (2-inch) brownies.

Peter and dharneyI think what's most interesting about this thread is that everyone seems to have an idea of their perfect weight, or the weight at which they feel happiest and healthiest. And it varies significantly from person to person based on body composition, lifestyle, etc.

Lots of guys have 2 or 3 markedly different weights that they look good atFor example, at about 220 and ripped as shit, I look like Booker TAt about 185and lean, but with still a good muscular tone, I look like Bill BellamyAt about 155 and stick like, I look like Dave ChapelleI feel I look good at all 3 weights, and I like the fact that I can move from one extreme to the other in any given 6 month periodWith girls its mainly different...Some girls can pull off the Bridget Jones look, but most have 1 ideal size that doesn't really fluctuate [Edited on October 26, 2009 at 11:32 AM. Highest I've ever seen has been 226, late last year. I'm 5'10". Right now I'm somewhere in the 210-215 range, haven't weighed myself in a few days. My ideal weight is about 170, so I have a long way to go, though I haven't seen that number since early freshman year (1998 for me). Made it down to 182 in '05 but then fell off the wagon. And I make no excuses, I'm lazy, eat too much, and don't work out enough. I will use as a qualifier the fact that I inherited a slow metabolism from my father (the man eats next to nothing, works 65 hours each week, and is still 240 lbs. @6'4") but it's not an excuse, just means it might not be as easy for me to lose weight as for some. I recently started working out again to train for my first 5K ever on Thanksgiving morning, so beyond the general health benefits I also hope to see some weight loss over the next month. My "ultimate" short-term goal is to get back to 200, which is what I weighed when I met my girlfriend. I do feel guilty that I've let myself get fat since we've been dating and she hasn't, so I need to reverse the trend there.
10/26/2009 12:47:42 PM
All my weight up top has to do with my bone structure and genetics. Low fat Pringles and Diet Coke pretty much means I can eat anything I want.
