I swear it's like anyone who is installed in the upper echelons of NC State's athletic leadership loses their god-damned mind. Of course that's assuming they ever had one in the first place (see Lee Fowler).

While the D hasn't been outstanding this game, it's nice to see us bringing some pretty consistent blitzes on the QB. Ponder hasn't had as much time as we gave Skinner and Lewis, that's for sure.

This is the same offense that lit up Carolina who had a pretty decent D.

She's not 100 percent wrong. Blame for the poor tackling should be spread around the coaching staff, as should the general lack of discipline (I thought TOB was good about eliminating penalties).

But when it comes to gameday defensive strategy Archer is the one to blame, although the blame for not vetoing such obvoiusly counterproductive strategies rests on TOB. THe hing is, TOB needs to either fix what Archer is doing or fire him while it's still TOB's decision to make (you know, before Murphy decides it's HIS decision)

before i pose the question i do want to say that i do not like our defensive philosophy overall and do think obrien should find a new d coordinator.

i just want to look at today's game only (FSU game). what would you have done differently on defense if you were the coordinator? i just didn't see what we could have done. we just suck. our players are awful. i think losing irving hurt a lot more than we are maybe giving it credit. but i just don't know what we could have done differently at least schematically.

^just because we had a defensive minded coach doesn't mean he was bringing in great talent. i agree that he has to get the right players on the field and in position to make plays but what is he supposed to do if there isn't anyone there? young and cash are nice players and do a good job for the most part. who else on our defense would start at any other program in the ACC?

It is TOBs third year but that means most of his guys are going to be RS sophomores or freshmen of some sort. there are not too many guys nationally that make a huge impact at that age and the ones that do don't come to NC State.

O'Brien needs to be better no doubt. Archer needs to be a ton better. But I just really don't know how much he has to work with in just his third year.

we gave them the flats all day and ponder woud just step back turn and throw to the open man at the los who had the defender 10 yards ahead of him when he caught it. this same thing has killed us every other game this year, last year and the year before.

We need to jam the damn wrs and bring pressure with cover 2. Sure it might not be great but at least make the other teams have to actually work for yards under pressure. Nothing could be worse than it is now.

If they can't tackle a guy and whiff consistently what makes us think they could consistently jam receivers to throw off timing? I think this would get us killed vertically as well as completely take them out of run support which we obviously need as well.

generally teams have players in position to swat balls/break up the completion. if nothing else i'd do this differently.

aside from the interceptions today, we only stopped fsu once if i recall correctly: ponder gets hit on third down and the ball hits the ground. other than that, their drives stalled when (1) the ball hits the receiver in the hands and he dropped it, (2) ponder's pass hits his receiver in the back because he wasn't looking for the ball, and (3) fsu gets a holding penalty on a play where, without the penalty, they'd be only the goal line.

thats the thing. if they are bad at coverage and tackling then you need to find something else for them to do. surely they can perform some aspect of the game or they woulnd't be playing scholarship football in the acc, or any d1 for that matter.

If they can't tackle then they need to be closer to the play. The defense we are currently playing works best with corners that can eject/jump the route when the ball is thrown, cover the ten yards and hit the guy in the flats as he catches it---or at least tackle him the open field after he passes the los/blocking wrs. Our guys can't do any of that so they need to be in the play and near the recievers before the ball is thrown.

Also if you're throwing off their timing at all, and have 7 in the box(2wrs, 2cbs 2safes) already, it will be hard for qbs to complete verticle passes over the safeties with the pressure coming and having to wait for wrs to get off the line initially. It will also be hard to run on that.

Its either that which risks the occassional deep ball or what we do now where qb just hikes it and throws to the wide open wr a few yards down the field all game.
