But he's won the regular season title 3 times. As far as I cant tell he's making $2 mil a year, which is a lot of money, but it's not what the top coaches are making (Izzo, Coach K, Roy, Bill Self, Calipair, etc.)

I've seen Roy's salary mentioned in places between 1.5 and 2.1, never seen anything saying 3.5

On ESPN or CBS they showed the final 4 salaries, K makes $4 mil, Izzo and Huggins $2 mil, Stevens $400k

Where are you getting your numbers?

Izzo makes over $3 mil:
http://www.mlive.com/spartans/index.ssf/2010/03/spartans_tom_izzo_wont_comment.html

Self makes $3 mil:
http://sports.espn.go.com/ncb/news/story?id=3522480

You might be right with Roy's compensation, I remember reading $3.5 somewhere but I can't find it atm. Either way Rick Barnes isn't getting paid like those elite coaches.

Looks like Brad Stevens isn't heading anywhere. He just agreed to a 12 year contract with Butler, financial terms not disclosed. I'm curious what the buyout is.

Eh, I dunno. Not everyone is driven just by the dollar. He could continue coaching there, still be making an insane amount of money for any 33 year old, and perhaps create his own coach K like legacy.

Plus, why jump ship to some new conference now? None of the elite jobs are open. He can just bide his time. I'm sure they negotiated buyout clauses that would allow the dream program of his choice to buy him out of it anytime they want.

Oh, and don't forget this dude was born, bred, and schooled in Indiana. I wouldn't be surprised if he is holding out for the Indiana job...

I don't think you can create a coach k legacy at Butler. He should strike while the iron is hot. Not this year, obviously, but the next major money school to axe their coach would be foolish not to look at stevens.

Why not?

And as far as major money schools, I'd say Oregon falls into that category. That obviously didn't appeal to him.

major money probably wasn't the best choice of words. oregon does have phil knight / nike money, but they aren't what I would call a big-time program, meaning a school with a lot of recent success with enough money to back that success up. i just don't think oregon is that kind of program and they are still looking to lure a top-flight coach themselves.

as far as building a coach k legacy, i think in today's basketball world, it's tough to achieve lasting success at the mid-major level. there are some programs like gonzaga that can be good for long stretches of time, but as far as mark few being on the same level as coach k legacy wise, he has a long way to go. stevens has made a great name for himself already, but he needs to be a consistent winner to be in the top tier of coaches. it's good that the indiana/ohio/midwest talent pool is deep, but being able to coach that talent up to where he can win against major programs is a daunting task.

^ I agree with the thinking that its hard to excel for long periods at the mid-major level...but I think a lot of that is because coaches bolt for big money before the programs really get the momentum they need. If this dude is anywhere near as good as his NCAA run (and like 89-15 coaching record) suggests, then he could stick around 5-10 years at Butler and they wouldn't be a mid-major school anymore. IE they would get themselves into a major conference.

I agree though, he probably will end up somewhere else in a few years. I just have wishful thinking about a coach caring more about building a legacy then chasing the dollarsssss.

don't we all

for my own information after looking it up, here's a comparison of few with stevens

Stevens
Overall - 89–15 (.856)

Few
Overall - 291-73 (.801)

also here's a pdf from the NCAA of active winningest coaches
http://web1.ncaa.org/web_files/stats/m_basketball_RB/2010/Coaching.pdf

other than few and rick majerus, who's now at st. louis after a good runs at marquette, ball state, and utah, there's only one other coach at a mid-major in the top 20 active winning percentages. majerus and few have good legacies, but not near coach k's and i may just be ignorant (actually that's probably it) but i haven't heard of danny kaspar, the head coach of stephen f. austin university.

In Sidney's contract:

Quote :
"Coach can advise the athletic director on selection and hiring of the following positions:

* Sports Information Director
* Director of Sports Medicine/Basketball trainer
* Strength Coach for the basketball team
* All support staff in the basketball office
* Equipment manager
* Athletic director"

Interesting....

And from Roy's contract:

Quote :
"Coach shall be entitled to operate a summer football camp, for which he could receive outside compensation"

Maybe that's why they sucked this year. They went to the wrong camp.

Did you read about how Brad Stevens became a coach? He traded a comfortable ~six figure pharmaceutical sales job for an unpaid volunteer assistant position at butler 10 years ago.

If he was just about money, he would have stayed put, because the chances of him even being where he is now were slim to none. This dude's cut from a different cloth, and I respect him greatly.

what? Crean was 190-96 at Marquette and went to a final four. He's going to get Indiana turned around, it's just going to take another year or two. That job was a radioactive fucking mess when he took over, and he was basically starting with NOTHING personnel wise.

^^ yeah he made a final four, but look at him since.

2003–2004 Marquette 19–12 8–8 8th NIT Quarterfinals
2004–2005 Marquette 19–12 7–9 9th NIT 1st Round
2005–2006 Marquette 20–11 10–6 T–4th NCAA 1st Round
2006–2007 Marquette 24–10 10–6 T–5th NCAA 1st Round
2007–2008 Marquette 25–10 11–7 T–5th NCAA 2nd Round

2008–2009 Indiana 6–25 1–17 11th
2009–2010 Indiana 10–21 4–14 T–9th

i mean sure he had to start over at indiana, but he didn't make it out of the first round of the ncaa tournament but once, and he didn't finish higher than tied for 4th in the conference. and yeah i know, the big east is super tough, but this isn't marquette or nc state, this is indiana.

^^^Sure he only finished as high as 4th in the Big East but he was only in that conference for 3 seasons for gods sake. He won Conference USA once when they were in that conference (not that that is a huge accomplishment). I also think Marquette is a tough place to win at in this day and age, but that's just my opinion. Also Indiana wasn't just looking for a coach that would win a ton of games, they were looking for someone who could win AND was squeaky clean after the Kelvin Sampson debacle, and I still think Crean fits the bill perfectly.

C-USA was pretty tough back in the day. They had Memphis, Louisville, Marquette, Cincinnati, Charlotte (when they were actually pretty good), DePaul, and St. Louis. I mean that wasn't on the ACC's level, but four of those teams are in the Big East now and Memphis would have won the National Title in 2008 if they could hit free throws.

man i shouldn't even have included his indiana records.

just look at his last five seasons at marquette. they're not very good. this is, of course, looking only at seasons after his final four, but on the same hand i don't think there's a single person on this board that would argue that paul hewitt is a good coach despite his single final four victory.

They aren't great, but they're a long way from bad too...also he left his successor a team loaded with talented upperclassmen and could have easily made another run at a Final Four with that team. After his final four appearance, he had some rebuilding to do but they were still making the NIT, and once those players were upperclassmen they were back in the NCAAs.

Clemson loses only recruit, interviews Al Skinner. Don't be surprised to see Jeff Capel in the mix for either the Wake or Clemson job. Another name that hasn't come up much for Wake but could is Kevin Stallings.

He went to an elite eight and everything, but OU had a TERRIBLE season this year and all their players bolted so it seems like something shady is going on with that.

Kevin Stallings would be a good fit at Wake I guess...I've never been particularly impressed with him but I would assume recruiting at Vanderbilt would be fairly difficult.

Stallings was an assistant coach at Kansas under Roy. Looking at his record for postseason play in the NIT and NCAA tourney, I don't think Wake would be satisfied for long. Still, 3 20+ win seasons at Vandy in the last four years including trips to tourney look pretty good.

The Colorado coach. He coached Air Force to their success 3-4 years ago, and is in a rebuilding process at Colorado. They have obviously stunk the 3 years he was there, but have at least been a bit more competitive this season.

He tripled the conference wins total at Colorado from his first to second year, and then doubled it in his third year. He's a good coach, the Colorado stuff is hard to gauge though unless you take into account Colorado is perennially terrible.

That said, no one in the ACC is scared of Jeff Bzdelik.

AND BEFORE ANYONE ELSE SAYS IT:

No one in the ACC is scared of Sidney Lowe......yet.

It begins.

OK so he's mired in the shit that is CU basketball, that's all well and good but wasn't the reason for firing Gaudio that he didn't have enough success in the post season? This dude has been to the tourney only once and he lost in the first round...I have a hard time believing Wellman would actually hire him.
