Not really. He said "forced retirement". If this was a forced retirement he'd be long gone by now. This is, find another job before we fire you.5/3/2010 3:20:54 PM |

Lee Fowler to be honored as SE Athletic Director of the year
Before Athletic Director Lee Fowler reaches his final day at NC State on June 30th, he will be recognized as the 2010 Under Armour Southeastern Athletic Director of the year.
The award is presented annually by the National Association of Collegiate Directors of Athletics. Fowler will be presented the award at the NACDA convention in Anaheim that runs from June 19th-25th.
Wake Forest AD Ron Wellman has won the award twice (2003 and 2008) and former Florida State AD Dave Hart, Jr. is a two-time winner (2000 and 2005). Clemson's Terry Don Phillips won in 2006.
Nominations had to be postmarked, by Monday, January 18, 2010. NC State received a letter dating March 2nd that Lee Fowler was the southeast winner.
On May 4th, NC State announced that Fowler would not serve as the Wolfpack's Director of Athletics through the final 3 years of his contract.
The NACDA web-site provides this background information on the award.
The Under Armour AD of the Year Award recognizes administrative excellence within the campus and/or college community environment. It is for NACDA members in the U.S. and around the world and is presented for significant contributions made by a director of athletics at their institution in their respective region. This award is presented annually in NCAA Divisions FBS, FCS, Divisions I, II and III, NAIA/other four-year institutions and junior/ community colleges. Winners will be presented with their awards during the James J. Corbett Awards Luncheon at NACDA's 45th Annual Convention. There will be 29 winners, four per division in the U.S. regions and one cross-divisional winner in the International region. Athletics directors may win the award only once in three years.

If Terry Don Phillips won it, then it sure seems appropriate for Lee Fowler to win it. Next they should retroactively give it to the Georgia Tech AD who signed Paul Hewitt to that insane contract. 6/15/2010 3:52:07 PM |

Wow this must be one of those awards that you pay to get. Like that Who's Who of High School students scam shit where you pay money and get to be part of an "elite" club. Fowler can put this on his resume as he applies to be the AD at St Aug and Meredith in the future. 6/15/2010 5:30:10 PM |

I figured it all went back to other ADs liking him because he made their jobs easier.
Either that or the people that are on the verge of getting the award colluded so they could lower the requirement for getting the award for themselves next year. I think it just cheapens the award....
Friend 1: Wow, you got the South Eastern Conferences Athletic Director of the year award! Congratulations.
Recipient:
Friend 2: Yeah, but Lee Fowler got it that one year.

I'm pretty sure all the ADs knew of his imminent firing and in true good ol boys fashion gave him the award so another school would somehow see him as an attractive hire... 6/16/2010 7:27:48 PM |
