Because Cobb said so? You consider what Cobb says reliable?

Explain why the Mombasa chase scene is so absurdly dreamlike.

i have no gripes about the movie, but am curious about something

Cillian's character might have recognized everyone else when he woke up at the end since he had just had 3 or 4 dreams within dreams with them involved (except when they had skimasks on). Was he just expected to have dreamed about them because they were the last few people he had seen before falling asleep?

was wondering if he might figure out they were in his head after he woke up lol

Especially since he'd been trained to recognize being in a dream and to try to thwart it...

it's more that his subconscious is trained.

When the militarized subconscious projections were chasing the team he was not aware that he was in a dream.

Yea. I think it's perfectly logical from his point of view.

Then again, he might only subconsciously recognize them from the dream. The most common technique for lucid dreaming is to start writing down what you remember as soon as you wake up. In other words, it takes practice to remember dreams.

"he person whom I respect most on the matter of film told me that this movie was crazy, original, and incredibly worth his time."

Very much in the tradition of Plato’s cave how do I know if I’m in cave watching shadows, or Descartes how do I know if I’m a brain in a vat – I can’t prove if the reality I’m experiencing is real, but a good starting point is I think therefore at least I know that I am, or the matrix, sort of the cell like, heck Babylon 5 had an episode with a few guys hooked up to a machine & drugs who engaged in shared dreaming where only 1 knew it was a dream and it was influenced by both of them in his attempts to extra information from the captain and by the end of the episode one guy is asking how do we know if we’re not still inside?

This movie wasn’t original, it’s an idea that’s thousands of years old and repeated over and over, but so is boy meets girl, or fish out of water, or savior of the people or any other storyline out there. So its lack of originality did not prevent it from being a good movie.

Also, I’m not a fan of movies or shows where the whole thing, or most of it, is a flash back to get back to the opening scene. Doesn’t ruin it or anything, just it’s a kind of tired, and obvious plot device.

Overall I'd give it an A- (maybe a regular A by comparison to all the crap that's come out this summer)

At least they're all sleeping with someone right?

SPOILER

Sorry if this has already been mentioned, but for the first third of the movie or so he's real worried about this huge multinational corporation that wants to fuck him up for not doing his job. OK, cool, adds some tension and action early in the movie.

And then, unless I missed something, they just left that whole part. Didn't mention it again. Assuming he's not dreaming and he is home with his kids, isn't there still the minor issue of ALL THOSE DUDES WHO FUCKING WANT TO KILL HIM? Seito couldn't call those guys off, they were his enemies, too.

Seems like it would have been an easy enough thing to resolve and unless I completely missed the explanation failure to do so was a bit of laziness in an otherwise excellent film.

yeah but everything from them getting to the plane to the end of the movie takes place in only a dozen hours or so, and i'm guessing you would be more occupied with the thought of seeing your children again than some company after you

besides, it wasn't dismissed - mal cites it as proof that cobb is dreaming.

The movie is a dream and 'cobol' is Cobb's subconscious trying to defend him from the team trying to perform inception on him.

I am just throwing ideas out really, I do not know, there is too much evidence to support different theories and none of it is overwhelming.

In the movie it's very clearly said by Seito that he had the means to settle Cobalt Engineering's dispute with Cobb. He was willing to do this for Cobalt because, even though Cobb had been targeting Seito (and failed), the means of settling the dispute would IMMEDIATELY benefit him (Seito) more than simply killing Cobb for being a bother.

Went and saw the matinee yesterday with my girl, and we both thoroughly enjoyed it, def. lived up to the hype.

[MINI SPOILER]

But during the movie only one thing stood out to me as just not making any sense. So if in the first level of the dream they're in the van, and it's in free-fall, so there is no gravity, the second dream level has no gravity. That I get, it makes sense. So, how does this not cascade down to every lower level? Because in the 2nd level there is now no gravity, and they're dreaming in that world to go to the third level, so if there is no gravity in the 2nd level, the third level should also have no gravity. So basically once a level achieves no-gravity, every tier below that should automatically have no gravity.

I understand they had to do it that way to make the movie watchable, I mean the snow fort level would have made no sense with no gravity, as well as the lowest tier. I just kept thinking about that while watching the movie, haha.

[/MINI SPOILER]

I think the fact when JGL tied them all together than eliminated the feeling of freefall and, thus, eliminated it from trickling down to the other levels.

Saw it yesterday. All I can say is how much I appreciate somebody bringing us something that isn't a sequel, or a reboot of an old TV show, or a genre that's been beaten to death, in 3D!

I think that it should have had no gravity. Even if they are tied together there still isn't a sense of stability. I am totally ok with them making the snow fort with gravity. Someone earlier in the thread said something about the effects of higher layers being lessened when you go further down. I dont remember that from the movie but hopefully that did happen.

I didnt pick up on any explanation about the 3rd layer not having any gravity altering effects.

if you think about it, everyone had already begun dreaming in the hotel level when the freefall from the rain/highway level came into effect, so maybe they just had no conscious awareness of the zero gravity, rather than just being a less-of-an-effect thing

Seito's character had less and less "consciousness" from his injury the further down they went, so I imagine that the feeling of weightlessness was also marginalized the further they went down as well. Likewise, when in the hotel scene, slight gravity shifts were felt, and Seito said "is that turbulence from the plane?" and the british dude responded, "no, it's closer than that, its the guy driving the van" which seemed to indicate that severe gravity shifts could only be felt from the layer immediately above the current dream. What kind of bothered me, though, was that when the van in the first dream layer was doing that barrel roll down the hill, none of the dreamers were "kicked" back into that dream stage or woken up, yet when the same van hit the water, everyone from the dream layer below (the hotel) were kicked back into the van. It seemed a little unclear to me how that was possible, unless you could only be kicked up from the bottom most layer upward...

awesome movie.

It does a good job of taking a very simple concept and simple plot and making it seem far more complex/intricate than it is.

I think the music was part of that loophole. I could be wrong though.

In layer 2 they got no gravity because in layer 1 they were in freefall. In layer 3 there is no gravity change because they aren't moving very much in layer 2. there's a very slow push by JGL, but overall nothing that really affects layer 3 (because in layer 2 they're not moving in freefall).

Wasn't the sedative still in effect there? Maybe it was designed so the kick had to be the water, not sudden movement

i'm not going to rewrite everything that everyone has already said in the last 5-10 posts because i agree with everything said. Another example of the lessening effects is the music that's played to try and prolong the dream. The chemist put the headphones on Arthur in Layer 1, thus he heard it in Layer 2 and knew he had to start setting up for the kick. The group in Layer 3 briefly heard the music too before it was drowned out by all of the shooting, so they too knew that they were almost out of time.

IIRC the chemist said that he left sensitivity to sharp changes in the inner ear, so it would seem that the van flipping should have caused a kick, but maybe it just wasn't severe enough. He did turn around and look at them afterward like he was worried they'd been kicked, but then was relieved and drove off.

Was that the same girl from Public Enemies?

I have a problem with her in that I don't find her very attractive

She's not Maggie Gylenhall gross by any means, but I'd like to think guys like Johnny Depp and Leo Dicaprio could pull hotter ass than her

Similar to that weird looking shrink hooking up with Matt Damon in The Departed

If she's all they can get, what does that say about the rest of us?
