I downloaded this game because it seemed interesting from watching a stream or two.

It seems pretty overwhelming to learn all the lingo and mechanics; especially considering the number of heroes and all of the different items you can get.

pick a ranged carry, google a guide on solomid or mobafire (make sure its not years old since they patch and change stuff) and just play computer games for a bit. Thats what I did

also play the tutorial. i think they give you 400 riot points for completing it nowadays and that is helpful to get at least one champion

Basically do whatever you have to, to not die. Don't auto attack minions early on (click a bunch to move around then try and click when their health is low to get dat CS $$$ dolla golds) and try to let them push and fight near your turret if you are bad.

they've nerfed jungling so much that i recommend new players try jungling since its mainly PvE and you can choose when to engage.

low levels, hardly anyone jungles, so you'll give your team a huge advantage if your top lane doesn't suicide all day long.

haha

jungling? I gather this is pretty much being in the non-lane areas trying to get your team bonuses by killing creeps and trying to gank enemy lane pushers?
push? i assume you push lanes, like push a tower?
cs? no clue
you have to acquire champions? you cant just pick whatever one you want from the start?
ranged carry? anywhere a list of the 'jobs' that champions do?

To be fair Ive not put a lot of time researching but I did try going through their intro tutorial area on the site but they dont really explain much of the lingo or the dynamics of how champions work together.

a quick breakdown.

10 champions are "free" every week, you have to purchase champions via riot points or influence points. influence points are gained by playing games, riot points are purchased with real money.

the 10 champions available rotate weekly.

you have the three basic lanes, top, middle and bottom. typically 1 person in each top and middle, and 2 people bottom. the 5th person jungles, killing the monsters and getting the blue and red buff. the blue buff restores mana faster and provides cooldown reduction, the red buff places a dot on the target hit and snares them for a short duration.

pushing is when one team overextends in their lane, typically you sit at the midway point where the minions clash, when one team overextends you're set up to be ganked. by allowing the enemy team to push it is also referred to as baiting the enemy team.

cs is your creep score, or last hits, you only make gold when you get the killing blow on the minion waves, the higher the cs the higher your money in the game.

ad vs ap - attack damage and ability power. fighter or caster. can further be broken down into bruisers, tanks, pushers, etc. but this is the basic of basics.

when you go to your profile and choose the champion tab it will list a tag of what the champion is categorized as, ranged AD carries usually consist of tristana and ashe (they are easier to purchase and come across)

no really lokken ... go to solomid.net and go to the guides section. There are champion specific guides as well as general game play guides. Look for the "featured" guides as they're submitted by the best players and contain the most accurate information most of the time.

just sit in the gameplay section for an hour or so and look through the different things they say to do, it wont take long to get the basics down.

My nerdy gaming friends, I need a passable headset until I can buy a really good one. I prefer the big noise cancelling ones that cover your whole ear, especially since I have a bunch of odd ear piercings. Would like to spend <40 bucks. Any ideas?

they "passable" range of over ear headsets start in the 60-70 range. And are almost as good as the "really good ones" in the 130-140 range.

would be better to just use speakers and a desk mic until you can get a 60-70 dollar headset

I have

http://store.razerzone.com/store/razerusa/en_US/pd/productID.169415800 (can get it cheaper elsewhere)

awesome headset I love it.

another option would be

http://steelseries.com/products/audio/steelseries-siberia-v2

http://www.turtlebeach.com/products/pc-gaming-headsets/ear-force-z2.aspx

although I suppose

http://www.turtlebeach.com/products/pc-gaming-headsets/ear-force-z11.aspx

would be in your pricerange, but it's kinda shit. the mic has a tendency to break if moved around to much.

Just played again after a while and man I'm a big bag of fail. Granted I'm still lvl 15 and keep getting in groups with lvl 20+ accounts.

I've been playing classes that poke the other enemy (Ashe, AP Twisted Fate), and it works really well for the early game. I'm usually fairly good at avoiding the gankers, but then there's always 1-2 on each team that exchange kills resulting in a few beastly characters. The failure tolerance there is 0 and so I'm just ducking in and out. Eventually I get to mid to later game with stats like 1-0-5 and then everything turns in to a giant death ball and I start constantly dying.

Not sure if I'm playing wrong or what. Guess it might be the team comps as well b/c I keep getting stuck with teams where we have 1 tank type and they have 2-3. Might try some other stuff, but I guess I'll see if there are videos to show me why I'm the badz0r.

play TF as AS/AD. Stack procing items and push the attack speed to 2.5. You can almost always kill a solo carry with his ult at that point. Pull a gold card, hit ult, port in, stun and destory

I've got the Turtle Beach Earforce X11's. I had a few other gaming headsets before that didn't fit my ears or head very well (damn you big headed big eared men). I haven't been too awesomely kind to it, and it has held up very well. Bonus if you play on the Xbox, the headset will work with it too.

I managed to get it at Target on Clearance - looks like the X12 is $60.. so might be out of your pirce range.

I agree that you should wait till you can afford that price range. Stuff below that price point just isn't as nice, or as comfortable.

Okay I just started playing this... I've played a decent amount of SOTIS (dota clone inside starcraft 2) so I know the basics. So far I've played a few games vs the computer just to learn the characters. At what point should I move on to playing against other people? And what should I do as far as buying characters. I definitely don't want to spend real money. Is it better to save up my inspiration points or whatever and just buy one really good character, or buy a few smaller ones. Not sure if its balanced in tiers or if everyone is basically balanced.

If anyone wants to recommend a character feel free - I prefer ranged ganking types over carries.

Also my name is dzags if anyone wants to play.

All the characters are supposed to be somewhat balanced so a more expensive character isnt necessarily better, try each of the free characters each week and when you find one that fits your play style, start saving. That being said, i would buy a 450 or 1350 champion or 2 just so you can get a consistent character to learn the basics with.

And do the tutorial game, it used to be worth like 400 ip or something.

Others here would probably be better at recommending characters to try than I but a good ranged ganker to try might be twitch

I played before as TF AS/AD. It worked ok, but I couldn't help but feel that the build felt an awful lot like playing Ashe with a short duration stun as opposed to a constant slow. The Ultimates are completely different, though, but at the time I preferred Arrow over the reveal / teleport because it was so much easier to know when to use. I've gotten better at it, so maybe that's more viable at this point.

After a further day of thought, I've determined that my execution is decent (though could get much better), but the real issue is that the build is much better in an organized setting. Wild Cards are one of the best early game harass abilities due to their insane range so my lane opponent is often low on life early on. I call for the gank, but everyone is just content to just do their own thing, even the junglers (if there is one).

Advice I've heard about runes, which I didn't follow but I kind of wish I had, are to get level 1 runes because they are so cheap, but then skip level 2 runes to save up for level 3.

Level 3s eat a lot of IP, especially when you decide you want to start mixing and matching different types.

So basically you start with 0 free heroes and you just use what they give you week to week till you can afford one? I know I can buy one now but I am not a big fan of the current ones I can afford. Should I just stick with the week to week guys?

If you like them on Facebook, you can get Tristana.

If you do something with their Youtube channel, you can get Alistar.

Those are the only free champs you can get (as opposed to playing what's available every week)

The general thought process with pricing is the more they cost, the more complicated they are to play. Thats not universal by anymeans but a general guide line. You can donkey stomp games with ryze and hes dirt cheap, etc.

Dont bother with runes till level 20. Id save ip for at least 1 full lev 3 rune page to start. Its going to take a dick ton of games to get champs and runes if youre going to forgo using rp all together. So prob pick a class type you like the best and stick wi that for a little while ( ad vs ap etc)

And is start playing against people now to get a feel for what the other characters do. Theres no real reason to play co-op or bot games except to learn ultra basics. If you already have an idea of what you need to do,, youre wasting time playing the computer

IP costs rarely change, they will put champions on sale but it only affects the cost by using riot points.

i've been doing this a bit more lately as the people get really upset even in non-ranked games if you have a very very bad game, which can happen if you don't know ANY of the champion skills.
