Yes, I can see how a hockey player moves faster. I'm having trouble seeing how the edges are ground into the ice and give them more resistance, because that's entirely against why ice skates work in the first place. There's negligible surface area contact when comparing an ice skate to the bottom of a cleat.
Unless you're talking about someone literally digging their spikes into the ice, in which case you gotta compare likewise to a football player doing the thing with his cleats. 6/21/2010 3:37:21 PM |

vinylbandit All American 48079 Posts user info edit post |
skates work by digging into the ice very sharply for a push
you glide with the other foot
but the pushing foot doesn't move until you start to pick it up, at which point it's no longer providing force
and even in the case of digging in the skate creates more resistance...that's why a hockey player can stop and change direction more quickly than a football player moving at the same speed ] 6/21/2010 3:41:01 PM |

maybe i missed something. why are we complaining about one sport to two non related sports?
i.e. A is so much more brutal than B!
but B is so much worse than C!
but we agree that A and B are better than C!
and then we all go watch baseball cause thats american 6/21/2010 3:56:55 PM |

So, instead of discussing soccer, which I guess everyone by now agrees is a pussy sport, we are comparing highlight reel hits from football and soccer.
Ok, so the thin ice skate is dug a little into the ice to provide enough force to move on a frictionless surface. I don't see where that's going. I'd say hits on a football player with a planted foot are much more likely to create a severe injury than a hit on a hockey player with a planted skate. We are going on anecdotal evidence, right? There's more surface area between the cleat on the field (plus all the spikes going into the ground) than there is with the single ice skate on the ice.
You may also have two feet on the ground. Regardless, there's more stability for the football player to absorb the impact than the hockey player on the frictionless surface. A hockey player will get flattened very easily because he has no way to brace himself, and the force is used to fling him through the air. Impressive, yes. Football players have to rely on their stability and contact with the ground to take the impact head on.
In addition, you have a difference in how the forces are being applied. [Granted, I've never checked someone on ice] If I'm not mistaken, and I believe I'm not by watching these clips, the hockey player zooms along on his skates without digging into the ice and smashes another player. Big hit, but there's no driving force, and if they do its minimal due to the single ice skate. A football player, on the other hand, uses his speed, an extra dig into the turf, and the enhanced stability of the cleats in the turf to use his entire body and lower the boom.
Of course, we are comparing two very different systems and only with anecdotal evidence, so there's only so many conclusions we can make from all of this speculation.
I've spent too much time on this and am going to do something productive
[Basing this on how football players get injured, such as myself when I got hit from the side when my foot was planted and I tore my ACL]

soccer blows for all reasons other than athletic ability
in fact, id say if the soccer games had more unathletic white guys in them it would probably get a few more viewers than bowling
which is on ESPN while soccer generally is not
soccer players are in such good shape they can be boring for 90 minutes

you're thinking about the skate in the wrong way
when the skate edges are parallel to the direction of motion, the surface is essentially frictionless
but the actual act of skating is done by placing the blade at an angle to the direction of motion and pushing off
that push is much stronger than a regular running push because of the vertical angle of the foot to the ice...the length of the effective push from the leg is much longer than it is when running
additionally, because of the way the skates are cut the outside of the edge doesn't work at all in the way the inside does, if you were standing flatfooted and hit from the side the outside edge would catch much easier than a cleat would hang in the ground ] 6/21/2010 4:05:40 PM |

because it is boring because these fuckers flop around and waste time because I feel it should be a little more difficult to wind up with a tied score because i feel it is a third world sport, and it becomes a first world problem when i am bombarded with it on my television because of the violent fans and violence towards players and coaches, and other fans...not a sport where i would take the kids on a nice weekend. who the hell thows bags of containing bodily humours in any other sport? because of the pathetic and arbitrary referring because I feel like its not a sport for adults or even adolescents to participate in because while it is athletic, i just dont see the skill, in fact i dont understand how trained soccer players can continue to miss the goal by 25 feet consistently or how they can just run past the ball as they are kicking it; also where is the skill in penalty kicking? I kick right or i kick left, maybe youll block to the right, or maybe youll block to the left...o no it doesnt matter dang it because i just missed the goal by 15 feet

Look God, the problem with what you're asking, is you gotta answer why. Some people are satisfied with the answer "Soccer is boring because it usually ends in a tie." That satisfies most people, they understand the context and deeper meaning. They understand that sports are meant to compete to declare victory. It is understood by most people.
But when you explain a why question you have to assume that the person is in the framework to understand the basis of the question. You take someone who is out of the framework and context of sports, for example you. Why do people compete? Well, they want to have a challenge, a drive in life. Why do they want to win? Because some people wish to show their dominance, or they want to succeed. Why do they want to dominate or succeed?
And you see you get a very intricate and complex background to the question why, and if you try to follow something up you get deeper and deeper in various directions. Why are they called pussies? Well, pussies are people that get hit and act like a little bitch. Why do they act like a little bitch? Well because they are trying to evoke a reaction from the refs. Why? Why? You can either say 'well, refs can be bought and can be corrupt.' And then you get into a very sticky situation, because then you have to explain the intricacies of politics, international relations, and eventually you get into history, racism, hell even how currency work.s
And you see, you can not simply understand the answer we give you. You have to know what it is that you are permitted to know and what you are not permitted to know. You notice that as we go deeper with this explanation you get more interesting and even into why mankind strives and the urge for life. With someone who does not understand the framework of sport, or competition, or not being a pussy, this question becomes very hard to explain and nearly impossible, and all we can say it is because soccer is a pussy sport.
So we are not going to be able to tell you why soccer is a pussy sport except that we tell you that it is.
(tl;dr just watch this http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wMFPe-DwULM )

People always complain about ties, and it's a bullshit reason.
The only time ties are allowed is during the group stage of the World Cup or during the regular season of a league. Championship games or games to decide the overall winner always end with a decided winner.
If you understand the way a point system works for a league or a tournament, you'll understand how ties work into the system. You get 3 points for a win, 1 for a tie, and 0 for a loss. Thus, it's possible for a team that would normally be expected to lose to actually "win" the game by playing defensively to a tie (see USA vs England in their opening game).
And with this point system it makes the tournament experience much more exciting, because your team ends up having to depend on other teams to do badly depending on how you performed. If you're tied with another team in points, you may need to bank on that team losing for you to advance.

because of the way the point system works in the tournament or league, as I previously explained.
This is much more of a dynamic system than simple win/lose/draw, because at the end, simply the top teams in points advance. There's none of that "BCS STANDINGS BOWL DRAW" crap to deal with.

MLB, NHL, NFL, NBA, NCAABB, FCS Football, D2 Football, D3 Football all have "real" standings that determine postseason, etc
Way to take the ONE sport with arbitrary rankings and try to convince everyone that a "3 points for a win, 1 point for a tie, 0 points for a loss" system is somehow better than the setups in MLB, NHL, NFL, NBA, NCAABB, FCS Football, D2 Football, D3 Football
