Hey Dan, my mom's boyfriend has a '90 3/4-ton Chevy with a slipping trans. I assume it's a 700R4 (or 4L60...not sure when they changed the name). You think it would be cheaper for him to have it rebuilt, or to just buy a reman and have you or Matt install it?
If it's the latter,

Duke...that's a good question. There are a couple of routes I usually like to take:
1. Have a shop rebuild it. Charlie Brown, Rose & Sons, or Mike's Transmission (I40 & Hwy 42; Mike Adams)
2. Get a rebuilt one. The only place I've gotten them from is Jennings in Goldsboro, and what's cool is that they can do extended warranty troubleshooting, and they're reasonably close.
A 700R4 is NOT rocket science, and most transmission shops can do a passable job of rebuilding.
Of course, Matt or I would be glad to do R&R on it; it's not a hard one to do. 8/12/2011 11:48:35 AM |

How much to put a cam in my LS6, Dan? I'm gonna leave the Z06 up in NC when I head to FL, so it'll probably be just sitting around up here for a few weeks until I can get back up here to get it.
Also, just to write out the stuff we were talking about the other day on that blue '66 pickup so you can remember...
It's a '66 C-10 with a 250 I6 and a 3-spd on the column. Looking at, in priority order:
1. Either rebuilding the column shift mechanism or converting to a 3-speed floor shift 2. Adding power steering 8/18/2011 2:04:59 PM |

scratch the cam...looks like I'll be able to get very significant power gains just with an intake, headers, and a tune, and that will keep it in a lower class for autocross (and save me a bunch of money). A quick look at the Google makes it look like those bolt-ons would yield something like 390 rwhp, or a gain of 40 rwhp or a little more.
or I might just not fuck with it...who knows. 8/18/2011 3:19:38 PM |

It's pretty cold in there now. I had it blasting all the way home from work this afternoon and came in the house (we keep it around 68) and it felt hot to me There was a lot of water dripping out so at least its not clogged. 8/19/2011 9:15:23 PM |

That's sweet! AC work is some of my favorite stuff. Yessir, the more humid it is, the more condensate you end up dumping. One thing I do like about GM AC systems is that they'll freeze you out of the car when properly working...well, make that two things...the other is that they are simple and usually pretty easy to work on.
Oh, and I am back to doing most car work. Still trying to not stress my leg too much, but it's a lot better.

My Z06's AC system works (had it evac'd and recharged), but it's still not as cold as it should be. It struggles when the temps get into the mid 90s or more, and will basically not even keep the car cold when it's that hot and you're sitting still.
At any rate, I might need to get you to evac & recharge the Ram later this week before I hit the road for FL, assuming you have the time to do it. Every place I've talked to down here either (a) refuses to install a customer supplied part (drier), and/or (b) wants $30/pound for R134a, or (c) wants $100 for labor for the evac & recharge, plus $20/lb for the freon, etc. 8/21/2011 3:41:27 PM |

I have a 99 Cavalier Z24...got a head gasket leak which caused the tensioner to go bad for the timing chain (I assume it's what is causing the knocking noise on the passenger side of the engine). Would like to get em both fixed. PM me with details for price, where you are located, and how long it would take. Thanks! 9/6/2011 10:14:38 AM |
