apologies if i missed it in the thread already, but i'm reading on IMDB that Carell is out of the show early?
also some "spoilers" in the link below too, no idea if they're true.

I really want to see Jim become the boss. I think the show would be better about a (somewhat) normal guy dealing with his crazy staff than a crazy staff dealing with a lunatic boss. 1/15/2011 10:36:45 AM |

no
they already tried it and it sucked. It takes away the best part of the show, the Jim/Dwight fight for authority and playing pranks on each other.
I'd like to see a new character as boss

It failed because Michael was still boss while Jim was a manager. Jim on his own would be fine, and i think it gives a new level to the dwight/jim rivalry.
An episode letting them take turns being boss would be interesting...especially if Creed, Angela, Kevin, or Stanley got a turn 1/15/2011 5:11:32 PM |

I asked about Mindy Kaling's Kelly, and he laughed and said she would probably find a way to insert herself into the running. I also asked about Jim, and Lieberstein agreed with me that Jim-as-manager has never served the character very well" |

edit: nothing big news-wise, I was just reading the article and figured I'd post it.

I hope Jim doesn't take over. Like I said this summer.
Quote : | "Jim as boss sucked. Jim is only funny in the context of playing the straight man to Michael and/or Dwight's crazy antics.
By himself, Jim isn't funny at all.

Definitely agree. I'm still waiting to see what happens with Carell leaving. I am definitely in the group of people that think "the first 3 seasons were >>> all the other seasons," but I still tune in to the show fairly regularly out of habit because I have watched it for so long. The switch will pretty much have two outcomes for me:
1) It refreshes the show and is actually worth my time to watch again 2) If it isn't any better or is actually worse it gives me a good point to just stop watching completely 1/17/2011 12:29:49 PM |

Please God, no Andy as boss. Please!
And I still like it for what it is. A half hour that I get a few chuckles out of -- but I don't really care about the big picture story-lines anymore... 1/17/2011 12:44:12 PM |

how is jim (or Andy, really) fit to be the boss? I thought one of the running gags throughout the seasons were that he really didn't care about the job...Michael's flaws are well-documented, but I always imagined he actually worked hard in his younger years to become branch manager. 1/20/2011 6:01:55 AM |

^Uh well Jim was co-manager for a while. That's a pretty good indication. That there is a lot of evidence that shows that even though Michael is a fairly incompetent boss, he was a really good salesman. 1/20/2011 9:16:00 AM |

Yeah Jim becoming co-manager didn't really make a lot of sense to me either since I remember him being outward about his apathetic attitude towards the job. His demeanor seems too ho-hum/non-schalant to be upper management. I don't know if it's a huge plot point and I guess I'm overanalyzing, but the show used to be well-written and not have low-rent stuff happening like Michael spanking Andy. 1/20/2011 11:12:34 AM |

In one of the earlier seasons Jim finally resigned himself to staying with Dunder Mifflin and then had been angling for a management type position. It was probably about the time he came back to the Scranton branch.
The only reason he's not still a manager (besides being terrible at it) is because he figured out that he could make more money as a salesman when compared to the flat rate of a manager. 1/20/2011 11:16:42 AM |

Jim is not a good candidate for management because he'll never take to DM as more than a paycheck.... though I would maybe say he's a little bit more ambitious now than he was in the beginning.
Season 1: "Right now, this is just a job. If I advance any higher in this company, then this would be my career. And, well, if this were my career? I'd have to throw myself in front of a train. "
Season 2: "So this possible client they're talking about--actually a big deal. It's Lackawanna county. Our whole county. And if we get this, they might not have to downsize our branch. And I could work here for years...and years.......and........years. " 1/20/2011 11:21:57 AM |

If he has "grown up", it has to only have occurred in the last two seasons. In season 5 he was still doing shit like:

I don't even know what that episode was about. Real estate? Small business seminar? Selling paper? This show is such a damn mess, trying to go in a thousand different directions.
Confident Pam sucks so bad, Jim and Dwight are neutered, no one gives a fuck about Stanley or Phyllis, they made Kevin funny for like two episodes, they're overusing Andy and underusing Darryl, Michael's characters always have been and always will be annoying as shit. They need to kill off half the cast and focus on plots that aren't scatterbrained. Maybe the writers can watch Parks and Rec and remember how to write a tight, coherent episode.
Erin's but-seriously-is-that-you-Michael reaction was the only funny bit last night, but her airheadedness is starting to get played out.
