It's fucking Batman. To a certain extent, realism need not apply. As long as it has the art direction and cinematography of the previous two films all of you will love it.

It definitely matters for continuity's sake. Nolan has been careful to make this Batman reincarnation grounded in the real world, rather than a comic book universe. You can't break from that now and start bringing back characters from the dead with a Lazarus Pit, at least not in the way that the comics have portrayed it.

I haven't read the book, but the always reliable Wikipedia says Lazarus Pits are referenced in the novelization of Batman Begins.

Apparently they are referred to as "The Pit" and appears in Ra's Al Ghul's journals.

I've always believed Ken Watanabe really was Ra's and Liam Neeson really was Henri Ducard. But when his home burned, Ra's transferred his mind into Ducard's body.

Hence the line, "Justice is balance. You burned my house and left me for dead. Consider us even."

If you take the literal interpretation of the movie, then Bruce didn't really leave Liam Neeson for dead, he saved him. Which would make that line inaccurate.

So I can see Nolan using the Lazarus Pit to revive and rejuvenate Ra's, also explaining the use of a younger actor rather than the older Liam Neeson.

But that's just my interpretation.
