Yeah, that's the other thing about Vail. It's like 25 dollar bucks to park. I mean, I guess when you're the largest ski resort in the country you can do whatever you please. 2/9/2011 10:02:22 PM |

I absolutely LOVE Beaver Creek, free parking, best groomers, no real bowls, but a fun place for sure. And you get freshly baked cookies in the village at 3pm everyday
I like Keystone, but it's got nothing on Breckenridge, Vail, or BC.
To be honest all the resorts cost $90-$100 for a day lift ticket so you might as well go to Vail. 2/9/2011 11:21:46 PM |

yeah, all the big name places there are about the same price. parking fee at vail sucks, but after going halfway across the country to ski, are you going to let $25 stop you from skiing vail? you need to go there and go to the back bowls. seriously. 2/10/2011 1:11:20 AM |

Ended up going to Vail.
Conditions were a little better the day before at Breck, except the temperature, but Vail was still pretty amazing.
The back bowls were pretty tracked out, but I found some good spots.

I'm headed to Summit County in a few weeks. It'll be my 3rd time out there and I've already skiied Breckenridge, Vail and Copper. My group is doing Vail and Breckenridge again, but the 3rd resort hasn't totally been decided yet. They seem to be leaning towards Keystone but from checking out the trailmap. Prospero et others that know the area well, what is the best place we should go to while there in lieu of Keystone? And give me reasons so I can push my case to the group 2/16/2011 5:12:23 PM |

^^Beaver Creek = best groomers/blues, cocoa & corduroy at 9am at the top of the first lift, hot baked cookies at 3pm, free parking
Keystone's not bad at all, they just get the least snow typically... but Keystone has free parking (front row for carpool of 4 or more) and night skiing from 4-8pm every night... and afterwards you can hit up Dillon DAM Brewery.

I was at Kirkwood yesterday the day after another 12+ inch dump. Somewhat to my annoyance they didn't have the complete backside of the mountain open, probably avy danger was too high. Oh well. I hope you aren't at Heavenly or Northstar for the weekend. What a disaster that will be. 2/21/2011 12:08:57 AM |

Just got done with day 2 at Park City...loving this place. We got in Saturday night in the middle of a 15" storm (on the mountain at least). Sunday was pretty rough due to all the snow, so my legs got a nice work out. Today we had some nice groomers to scream down though. Think we're sticking around here for the most part, but are planning on heading to The Canyons later in the week. 2/21/2011 9:41:59 PM |

^^heavenly is retardedly expensive and probably the most crowded of all the tahoe resorts. You can ski straight off the slopes and go right into the casino.
Since you are staying for free then northstar will be fine. Terrain wise its flatter than a lot of the other resorts, although it does have a huge terrain park if you like that sort of thing.
Kirkwood is fun as hell and not as crowded because you have to drive further to get to it (at least from south lake tahoe)
Squaw valley is huge and fun. Sierra is ok as well, but Im partial to Kirkwood and Squaw valley 2/21/2011 9:53:12 PM |
Wintermute All American 1171 Posts user info edit post |
It also depends if you ski or board, on skis you can hike to a lot of good terrain at Heavenly pretty easy & get away from the crowds a bit.
My preference is also for Squaw or Kirkwood (I have a season pass at Kirkwood). Alpine Meadows is supposedly not so bad but I haven't been there yet. 2/21/2011 11:49:16 PM |

Give you guys a heads up in case you didn't know. State has a Ski and Snowboard Club. We take 4 weekend trips at the beginning of spring semester and a week long trip out west either spring or winter break. The weekend trips coincide with USCSA races and club members have the option to be on the race team. Unfortunately its already the end of the season for us, so check it out next season. Its definitely the cheapest way to ride if you're a student, dues are $75 and pay for housing all season and most of the time racers get discounted tickets. 2/23/2011 5:04:32 PM |

Don't assume it was a novice. Something similar happened to a UVA (I think, maybe VT or another regional school) ski team member a few years back. Took their helmet off after a race, took a run and busted their head open on some rocks off trail or something.
I had another friend on the NC State club team knock himself out & suffer a concussion after he skied into an unflagged rope fence at dusk. He even had his helmet on, you can never be too careful.2/23/2011 9:13:20 PM |

keystone is awful (compared to the big three) really steep/ iceblock blues with no redeeming features
they do have a few large areas for park riding (this would be the only reason to go)
if you dont want to do one of the big ones, id suggest arapahoe for a change up. it should be cheaper too 2/24/2011 11:26:11 AM |

Keystone only sucks when they don't have snow, which they haven't gotten any significant snow in 1+ week. So expect ice, PARTICULARLY if you stayed on the front side blues as it's in the shade all day and gets the most traffic & night-ski traffic as well. If all you do is groomers, yea, Keystone may not be that great for you as they don't typically groom that much during the day.
Keystone's redeeming features is in the Outback. Skicats & Hike-to's take you back to some vast open bowls, lots of really long tree-runs, and places you can find fresh powder 4-5 days after the last snow. When Keystone HAS fresh snow, I'd put it right up there with Breck. And yes, their terrain park is one of the top 5 in the U.S. Sorry it wasn't that great for you, but I will tell you A-basin would be a huge let down. A-basin is 1/3 the size of Keystone, even STEEPER terrain, and even icier and less covered than Keystone, and incredibly slow lifts.
Hitting up Vail this weekend.

Are the snowcats at Keystone free, b/c I heard they were $5 a pop which is really gay since the chair lifts don't access any bowls

The snow-cats are $5 a pop, but the North & South bowls are free and only 300ft hike from the top of the Outback, you can get to all the bowls via hiking the ridge, the snow-cats are just for convenience. 2/25/2011 12:45:11 PM |

Just went on Friday for my first time ever. We went up to Appalachian Ski Mtn for snowboarding. It was like trying to ride on a slurpie instead of snow and their learn-to-ride boards don't have edges by design so I spent some quality time on my butt. I had a great time though. I'd really like to get into it more. 2/28/2011 12:43:04 AM |

So we had 2 ft. of powder on Friday at Northstar....and there is a huge learning curve with snowboarding on that deep of snow. Even with my bindings set all the way back, learning to ride the rear of the board takes some practice......but the falls are painless!
Kirkwood was gorgeous and awesome doesn't even begin to describe that place. I put it right under Breck thus far.... 3/2/2011 10:30:13 PM |
