I agree that Ford would have been a better pick (although not as good as not trading away our 2nd rounder in this year's draft in the first place), but how does taking taking Edwards over Ford save us money?
Oh, nevermind, its a DROD post.

Panthers owner Jerry Richardson is targeting "leaders, not celebrities," and Fewell fits the bill as a Tom Coughlin protege who's paid his dues as a 13-year NFL assistant. Fewell, 48, is considered a terrific communicator -- a quality valued highly in head coaches. The Panthers' lone interview so far has been with in-limbo Browns defensive coordinator Rob Ryan. hurney is an idiot, but if you think this is why we picked edwards over ford, i don't know what to tell you1/6/2011 11:01:44 AM |

I said why he would save us money in the very sentence you quoted
Instead of taking a potentially starting WR with the pick (i.e. someone who could demand a fairly substantial salary after a couple years in the league) we took a lifetime special teams returnman (i.e. someone who will never get paid more than $500,000 a year in all likelihood). Plus on top of that we traded away another pick to take Armanti, which saves us the money that we would have to pay to whoever we got with that pick
^I'm not the only one who thinks that. This topic was discussed ad nauseum yesterday by Adam Gold and Joe Ovies - they were actually the people who brought up the idea, which makes sense when you think about it.
why do you think hurney picked Edwards over Ford? Because Edwards played for App State and will bring in more fans? Because he truly believed Edwards would project into a better NFL WR than Ford? Edwards wasnt even a WR coming into the draft, so he is a project to say the least. Ford is an accomplished WR AND returnman. I think Ford returned more kicks/punts this year than Edwards did, so even if he was targeting an explosive returner with the draft pick, Ford would make more sense from that perspective

Ford fell to what, the 4th round? So every team passed on him three times. If he were a guaranteed home run hitter like you're saying, he would've gone much earlier.
Also, playing WR in college is not a prerequisite for being a decent WR in the pros.
Hines Ward and Antwaan Randel El are living proof of that, as well as a host of other bums like Matt Jones, Ronald Curry and Arnaz Battle 1/6/2011 11:26:19 AM |

there are far more successful WRs in the league who were also WRs in college than QBs in college, if thats what youre trying to say
we could go back and forth about this all day, I just think Ford is/was more likely to be a starting WR in the league than Armanti Edwards 1/6/2011 12:15:22 PM |

anybody catch Phil Simms ripping on Luck this morning on the Mac Attack? http://wfnz.cbslocal.com/2011/01/06/mac-a-phil-simms/
Also some dude emailed in and said his daughter dates some guy at Stanford who is good friends with Luck, and that Luck is calling a press conference this afternoon to announce that he's staying in school

I never really loved Jimmy Clausen I just thought he was a good pick for where we drafted him. Certainly nothing like the hype for Luck.

If Clausen is the starting QB next year, I have a feeling 1-15 or 2-14 is still a big possibility.
We should just trade down, get two studs for the o-line, and draft Luck first next year.

Come on, relax. There are still several stud-possible QB's coming into the draft this year, let's trade down, get some beastly O linemen, pick up a defensive tackle, get another of the big QB's coming in, pick up some WR's and see if we can't turn this shit around without him.
And if that plan fails... Let's draft Luck first next year.
Explain to me what fuckin sense it makes to stay in school another year KNOWING you will be the #1 overall pick?

man I have a feeling we're going to be the worst franchise in the league now for the next 2-3 yrs or until richardson croaks or retires, I don't even see how we can trade down when there are no quarterbacks, at least if we get bowers he probably won't be a bust like a rb or qb could 1/6/2011 2:47:12 PM |
