^Hey I'm ok with that. You have the right not to like guns, and that is perfectly acceptable in my opinion. I just dont like when the anti-gun crowd paints all of us as redneck cowboy gun totin spray and pray sort of people. I am not saying that if I had a gun and I was in that bank the situation would have turned out any different. All I am saying is that if I had a gun and the robber had pointed a gun at MY head...I would have a chance to defend myself rather than waiting for the cops to do it.
I'm also not saying that there arent redneck cowboy gun totin spray and pray gun lovers as well. We as responsible gun owners dislike that portion of the population as well. There are fuckups in every group of enthusiasts out there, no matter how much we try to inform everyone. 2/13/2011 1:28:46 PM |

well maybe you should educate your self a bit because that is all ccw people want to do; and, minus a few exceptions, is generally all they are legally allowed to do.2/13/2011 2:05:38 PM |

You didn't make it clear which part of my post you were talking about. Now that I know, I understand.
And I'm not saying that all CCW want to "save the day"...I'm just saying that I'm okay with that option being taken away from them in places like banks. 2/13/2011 2:19:43 PM |

* In law enforcement or correctional facilities such as a prison; * In financial institutions such as a bank; * In any space occupied by state or federal employees, including state and federal courthouses; * In schools or on school grounds; * In areas of assemblies, parades, funerals or demonstrations; * In any place where alcoholic beverages are sold and consumed (such as some restaurants); * In any area where concealed handguns are prohibited by federal law; * In any place of business that has posted a sign banning concealed weapons on its premises; * By any person while consuming alcohol or while under the influence of alcohol or any controlled substances (unless obtained legally and taken as directed by a physician). It's like talking to a five year old with you. Someone was arguing against it earlier ITT, right here:

seems stupid that you prevent someone qualified to carry a gun from coming in but will let someone who is not qualified make a visit." |
Just stating my support for it's continuance.2/13/2011 2:27:20 PM |

Here's your twist....
Quote : | "Police: Hostage-taker at Cary bank didn't have a gun
Posted: 23 minutes ago Updated: 11 minutes ago A man who took several hostages at a Cary bank Thursday did not have a gun, Police Chief Pat Bazemore said Sunday.
Authorities say that Devon Mitchell held several people hostage at a Wachovia bank on Green Level Road for three hours Thursday. Officers shot and killed Mitchell when he left the bank, holding what appeared to be a gun to the head of a woman.
Bazemore emphasized that she believed that officers acted correctly based on the information they had.
Mitchell told a 911 dispatcher, the hostages and hostage negotiators that he had a gun, Bazemore said. When he came out of the bank, he was holding an object hidden in a toboggan.
"He told the hostages he had a gun, and the hostages believed he had a gun," she said.

It really doesn't change anything (as far as cops getting in trouble) as long as everyone really thought he had a gun.
This guy definitely had a death wish.
Here's a thread derailment for the religious people on this site:
Does this count as suicide and prevent this guy from going to heaven? 2/13/2011 2:44:59 PM |

Sucks to be the cop that shot him. That cop is going to not only suffer permanent mental scarring (Unless he is one of the 2% of pre-disposed remorseless killers), but he (Or she) will also likely be sued now that it came out that the hostage taker had no weapon and it's entirely possible that he (Or she) and the state will lose.

Probably not. Unless it was a situation where he shouldn't have shot him even if he had a gun.2/13/2011 4:25:55 PM |

It's entirely reasonable to expect that someone will sue, it happens all the time even in clear cut cases. Since this one isn't as clear cut, it is also possible that they will lose. Perhaps not, but I would hate to be in that cop's shoes right now.2/13/2011 4:55:46 PM |

^ We obviously don't know the details, but if a reasonable person would have thought he had a gun, then it's clear cut. And it seems that everyone thought he had a gun at the time.
Just from the small amount of details we know, I'd wager there's a 95% chance that nothing will come of this. 2/13/2011 5:05:43 PM |

i understand not being able to carry in federal buildings, schools, etc. do not understand why we cant carry in a bank.
if i am going to rob a bank I'm going to take my gun CCW or not. maybe they think that if i see someone with a wad of cash and i happen to have my gun on me it will entice me to rob them?

This Suicide By Po-lice(TM) could have been prevented if only minorities were afforded greater access to handguns. Legislation mandating the shutdown of "saturday night special" gun manufacturers has pushed gun ownership out of the reach of low-income individuals, forcing this situation into the messy den of the money-changers, rather than the private, dignified brain splatter that suicide should be.
My modest proposal is that we allocate a fraction of the amount spent on emergency response to situations like these and construct public Suicide Facilitation Centers in ghettos and areas of urban decay, where any troubled young ne'er-do-well can walk in and quickly dispose of their dim future. Phase II of this project will include its expansion into areas with large elderly populations and common sources of teenage angst, like K&S Cafeterias and goth-rock shows, respectively.
