Gary Parrish and Jeff Goodman are both saying Turgeon has accepted the offer...we'll see. I hope he turned them down just so they can suffer more.

Edit: Good hire...especially when they missed on their first few guys. Turgeon is a good coach...not sure of his recruiting abilities, but he's in an area with tons of talent.

ACC basketball is upgrading coach-by-coach.

Us, Maryland, Clemson, UVA, and BC seem to have made good hires lately over their replacements.

Bennett, Gottfried, Brownell, Donahue, Turgeon look like solid hires.

landing turgeon kinda gives me blue balls since this had potential to get hilarious if he turned them down but i'll take it

they don't make a big time hire but they'll still be a solid team and the league needs that I guess

Turgeon is not a great recruiter.

AG thinks that a great recruiter who is not a great game coach will have success because of the massive amount of local talent.

I think AG is dumb.

well yeah, Lowe was great recruiter and horrible in-game coach so i can agree with you on that...i would rather a coach dictate the players he brings in rather than players dictating the coach's success (meaning a good coach can do a lot with a little, a good recruiter will be at the mercy of his players' success)

^^ Lowe was a good recruiter. He had one great class in five years and even that class wasn't in the "great" category given what Harrow is... Lets not crown his ass considering 3 of his 5 classes were busts -- I'm being kind to the Hickson class because of Tracy.

*** Turgeon is a good COACH. You don't need to be a great recruiter in the DC metro if you're willing to play the game. Sweaty played the game until he lost out on a few big timers and decided to cry and whine instead of manning up like he used to.

From 2011:

1) Calipari - $4M
2) Izzo - $3.4M
3) Donovan - $3.3M
4) Self - $3M
5) Matta - $2.5M
6) Pitino - $2.25M
7) K - $2.2M
8) Barnes - $2.2M
9) Roy Williams - $2M
10) Howland - $2M

40% of those have never won a title. #4 has a title, but thanks to #1 having no discipline and constantly having his teams with FT problems. If Rose hits a FT or two, then 50% have no titles (Cal's title wouldn't have counted).

Barnes is the most overrated coach in America IMO...

yeah man it really seems like the acc has turned the corner, only possibly questionable hires were wake and gtech but he should at least be able to equal hewitt and surpass most of his results, others should all be clear upgrades (except for maybe donahue, I like him but BC has zero tradition and skinner was the best they had at one point), you left out miami though and I know some uva fans are already getting pessimistic about the uva guy because he hasn't really had a great start

Bennett is a good coach. He'll take a few years to get going though.

Also, Haith was awful. Larranaga is an upgrade for the five or so years he'll be there in terms of pure coaching.

Pitino makes like 6 mil or something ridiculous. That list is probably incomplete and he might be around 10 or so but still overpaid. I dont know why people care, though. If a coach is good he's going to end up with a huge salary anyway

edit: apparently this dude got a rep as a whiner about aTm's shitty crowds:

alright well let me sort all this out now:

clear upgrades: gottfried, turgeon in comparison to the program at its stage now, Larranaga

as good and have a chance to be better: donahue, brownell but purnell was doing a fairly good job, brian gregory I doubt he'll make a title game should be better overall than hewitt recruiting the ATL area

jury is out: bennett, bzdelick,

Bennett has had absolutely no talent to work with. I don't see how he is off to a bad start. They have had the least talented roster since he took over. Landesburg was the only ACC starting caliber player he had and he got kicked off the team early.

^^Exactly...those 10 coaches deserve to be paid that much. Turgeon has yet to prove that he deserves that type of salary...which doesn't make him a bad coach. His resume just does not stack up to those other 10 guys. But MD paid him what they had to so they wouldn't be stuck with Cronin...hard to blame them for that.

I mean I'm happy we did what we did with Gottfried. Money aside, I'll take a guy with the rep of a a recruiter (as long as that isn't all he's good for) over a "good coach." And if you throw the cash in, it's a good deal

But honestly I don't care how much Wendell Murphy is paying. If you can drop 2.5mil to get the best coach out there, you do it

Gottfried is going to get paid $1.2 million.

Turgeon is going to get paid $2.8 million.

Is it really worth paying over double for a guy with a similar track record?

i think we got a better deal, but the only thing that will matter is which coach wins more

I find it funny that Texas Tech is the premature ejaculate of college sports.

If Tommy Tuberville had waited a few days, he'd be coaching at Tennessee.

If Billy Gillispie had waited a few weeks, he'd be coaching at Texas A&M.

Are they really talking shit about this hire? This was a guy we interviewed and passed on. Sturgeon isn't a bad hire by any means, but they're paying A-list money for a B-list hire. That will put their athletic dept. in a financial bind for the next several years, especially if he doesn't meet expectations that I imagine are pretty lofty.

A quick read on any of their God awful forums will provide a lot of LOLs. They are basically saying DY fucked up the search and had to settle for a has-been like Gottfried, and that Turgeon turned us down when we approached him, so they 'won' the search. I've read that DY said "thanks, but no thanks" because he gave too much reverence to K/Roy, but they insist that he rejected us like everyone else. They are also trying to down play the fact that Miller played them for a raise by saying that he at least considered them, whereas he didn't even take the time meet with DY. I guess it doesn't matter either way, we have our coach and they have theirs. Neither search went well for very similar reasons. But for them to think they got the last laugh for paying close to $3M/yr for a semi-decent coach is absurd.
