Sounds like JR doesn't wanna resign anyone. This is getting frustrating.

Frustrating but expected. Small market team general manager vs. agents trying to get the most money for their clients. It's like this every year.

the same exact thing is said every offseason about a number of players

no reason to think that this offseason is any different

and I'm glad I'm not the only who thinks that shirt is fucking hideous

even more absurd is that this years cap floor is $9 million more than the 05-06 cap. Teams like us, Florida, and others are going to have to push in order to hit that $48mm floor.

Why was there a lockout again?

Yeah that shirt is straight out of 1988.

I don't know who thought that was a good idea.

Well Hell's Bells, I can't see the shirt.

I have an opinion on the salary cap... but I also have conspiracy theory issues I need to get through first.

For some reason, now I can see the shirt. I agree.... gross.

food for thought when considering re-alignment:

The horrendously bad travel schedule that the red wings have meant that they racked up more miles than 11 teams last season. Horrifying.

Dwyer is meh so I don't really know how I feel about this.

I will believe the Pitkanen signing when it's officially announced.

I wonder how much Cole wanted.

I thought he made less last year. Oh well. Either way, I think it's too much, even though I do like him. Since it's the same amount...what was the hold up?

His exit interview from last season just rubbed me the wrong way, though. He sounded like he was ready to get the hell out of here.

For 3 years it isn't bad at all money wise. After all the hate he got from people like on the Canes FB page he was still close to even on the +/-. Hopefully we can find a partner for him on the top pairing that's more of a shut down type guy. I just hope our offense doesn't take a hit with not resigning Jussi/Cole or someone comparable or better.

I like the Dwyer signing too, solid 4th line player and not too much $.

If we can get Jussi on board I'll be happy. Joni's exit interview attitude is based on a cultural difference. I'm not gonna go into detail on my crackleberry finn but I can assure you he likes Raleigh and the Canes organization

how much is it going to take to re-sign Jussi?

When Joni actually plays focused he is a great fit for our system, he just takes too many shifts/games off to be our 3rd highest paid player. I wish we could use that money to sign Jussi and then pick up another Bryan Allen/Derek Joslin type player

I'm ambivalent about the Cole situation.

I think that's the most positive thing I've said about him in years.

the re-signing of Pitkanen doesn't necessarily bar the re-signing of Jokinen, but it certainly doesn't help... and he should have been a priority.

I have mixed emotions about Cole.

But Pitkanen doesn't deserve 3 years. Especially at 4.5 million.

The whole Jussi deal reminds me of when Mussina walked from the Orioles - it wasn't so much that he wanted to go, but that the club didn't make him a priority.

Nice fucking deal. I thought he was looking at $5 or $5.5.

To put it in perspective BROOKS LAICH just signed a 6 year deal today worth $4.5 million per season with a no trade clause.

He should sign here, it's his home. But as already mentioned, look what Brooks Laich got. Cole has to think he can get at least that if not more. And I'm pretty sure JR hasn't come close to those kinds of numbers.

And I don't mind Joni at 4.5, he would have gotten 5+ on the open market. Plus, he will be entering his prime playing years the next 3 years. Any more than 4.5 would have been too much for his propensity to lose focus so it's a tolerable contract. Don't forget, this guy does play 23+ minutes a night.

first,

goodlife, nice trollin' bro. We'll see how well those Bobcats of yours do.

second,

Y'all wanna improve defense, yet prioritize bringing back the guy who's on-ice awareness is about as much as the chick behind the Nutty Bavarian stand.

So what-the-fuck ever.

When he's off in Joni-land next year and we're on the outside-looking-in come playoffs, don't bitch. We got him at a fair price, right?

I'm not trolling, dick

our D, as lackluster as it is, couldn't have afforded to lose Pitkanen

there is a reason that a majority of the usual Hurricanes posters are 100% behind re-signing him

Quote :
""Cole and Jokinen are not in our budget now," said a disappointed general manager Jim Rutherford. "They are two very good players and two very good people, and I am very disappointed because I like them both. Once things roll out I’m sure it’s going to be a bitter departure, but that’s the way these things go. We’re preparing for Friday and we’re going to do the best with rebuilding our forwards and we’ll see what happens."

Both Cole and Jokinen have turned down substantial multi-year deals. Ron Francis reportedly checked in one last time with Cole on Tuesday to gauge his interest in returning, and then said goodbye and wished his former teammate well."

Quote :
""We have a different dynamic this year than we’ve ever had because there are going to be so many teams spending on July 1. It’s going to be difficult to sit and wait to see what happens," Rutherford said. "We’re going to have to be active and see what’s out there."

"With Cole and Jokinen leaving, our team will have to get re-structured," Rutherford said. "We have to totally rebuild our third line, and if we can do that we’re going to be competitive and if we can’t then we won’t.""

Quote :
"Rutherford was given the green light by owner Peter Karmanos to spend about $5 million more than last year’s budget, or up to around $50 million. That amount of money would have been able to secure all of the team’s unrestricted free agents – including Cole and Jokinen – but both players are seeking more cash on the open market.

"Not that we have a business that supports it, but our budget looks like it’s going to be a hair over $50 million," Rutherford said."

GOD FUCKING DAMNIT! He's not worth anything over $1mm.

JR's quote:
Quote :
"Chad has been one of my favorite players right through his entire Compuware career, and it is my hope that he is a lifelong player with the organization,” said Rutherford. “His work ethic and locker room presence drive our team, whether it’s a game or a practice, and he excels in his role on the ice for the Hurricanes."

Gerbe got a 3 year deal worth only 1.433 M avg from Buffalo, for a slightly appropriate comparison.
